I could get lost in this store, every aisle gets better, I need this and this and this...and when you go check out you are always greeted by friendly faces. I have to admit some things I have no clue what do with but the beauty of googling recipes, I do have to read a life story before I begin cooking but it is worth the time. I need to try their take out. Yup love Mi Tierra Foods.
My family is Mexican but I don't cook Mexican food very much because I'm terrible. Every year my 5 cousins plus their kids & hubbies stop by Oakland on their way to Tahoe, to pick me up & spend the night. I always make a big amazing dinner when they're here. I have stopped by this store four times now, and *every time* a different amazing lady shopper has noticed me standing in front of the gargantuan selection of peppers, or spices, or tortillas, trying to select a brand, and handed me the one they like. "What are you making? Oh, ok. You need these tortillas. See how they still feel warm, & there's steam on the inside of the bag? You can see they were just delivered this morning, they're very fresh. Now if there aren't any fresh ones of this brand, or if you want to buy them to use later, then this is the best brand ... Of course they are always right, and I save all the recommendations in my recipe book. I also get some pan & pastry for breakfast the next day. It's just a really good place. Incredibly clean, lots of variety, & they have some things my Dad used to make, that I'd forgotten completely - like the little packets of sour tea, in the spice pouches. I would shop here every day if my husband wasn't allergic to corn & cornstarch
Hmm, this is tough. The first time I went to get a burrito, it was huge and packed with meat. It was really good and definitely a 5 star visit. The last time the burrito was not that big and just so so. 3 star visit for sure. I'll probably give them another shot when I'm in the area if I want a burrito or tacos, especially with the bars in the area. This is only a review of the food counter, not the grocery store. Do people read review for which grocery store to go to? I'm guessing no, so hopefully you came here to read about the food. I'll snap a menu pic next time I go.
We popped into the store because it was there. Walking through the store, we found a couple of pastries that looked perfect for dessert. Unfortunately, we found the pastries to be way too sweet for us. We couldn't eat more than a couple of bites of each one. We also saw that they sold Tamales in the eating area. Those are rung up separately. At first, they were out of Pork but managed to find one. We ended up with one each of Pork and Chicken and two Corn Tamales. The Masa on the Tamales was pretty good. The filling, not so much. Oh well.
Okay, I went here awhile ago. March, I think. I was looking for some manteca (pork lard) to make Spanish rice. My Mom has a recipe from the 1950's that calls for pork lard and it makes the BEST Spanish rice ever. I also needed some pickled jalepeños (for the fish taco sauce). Anyway, I was having a party and I was having problems finding it at traditional supermarkets so I thought I'd try Mi Tierra Foods because is was convenient to my family home. I walked in and it was your normal, bustling, independent grocery store....it had a little bit of everything, but with a Latin flavor. I asked the guy for some manteca and he nodded over to the butcher's counter where the manteca was sitting in little plastic tubs. Yay! The best part? $2.00 a tub! Double yay! I ran by the peppers and picked up my jalepeños and I was good to go! Folks, you can buy pork lard at a traditional store, but you can't get it for the price of a Mexican store. Additionally, I believe they bleach the pork lard, making it look like Crisco. (Typically, it has like a brownish, tannish hue to it). I guess bleaching it must be super expensive because Ive seen it for as much as $7.99 for a small Skippy jar size. So save yourself some trouble and great expense - go to Mi Tierra. if you have to park, there is plenty of side street parking for free. The help is nice and helpful and the price is right. What else can you ask for?!
Tried the cafeteria style restaurant found in the Mexican market. The store and restaurant are very clean and the staff are hospitable. Super carne asada burrito and a horchata all for $12 The horchata tasted authentic and the thick and silky cold liquid went right down into the books with me it was absolutely delicious and most important not too sweet. This burrito was massive like bigger than my foot. It had all of the fixing guacamole pico de gallo etc. They had a bean selection and I chose black. I wasn't impressed with beans and rice they were a little bland. The rice seemed like it was boxed rice based off of the texture. Its not a deal breaker though. The smoked red chili/salsa at the self serve bar was pretty good. The smokiness really hit home. All and all it was a good burrito and I will be coming back.
Sometimes you have to stick to the source! My co-worker and I visited this spot for the burrito bar inside this San Pablo market with a sidequest for a 3 liter bottle of Mexican Coke. The cola exists, and the asada and lengua super burritos were excellent! It is interesting to see how each restaurant interprets "super". In this case that refers to the guac and other extra ingredients that are added. I was also impressed that they had two different salsa verdes! They only serve carnitas on the weekend, but I have no problem coming back here in the future for more! Overall 4/5 burritos and 3/5 beers for the drunchies since they close at 9pm.
My search for the best cheap Mexican in the East Bay continues... This is a Mexican influenced market, with a meat market and a small taqueria inside. A quick browse of the market showed off some produce: the basic goods, but it all looked fresh, a ton of products one would need to make Mexican/Latin influenced foods like arepas, huaraches, etc... and a butcher counter. I didn't buy anything at the market so I can't speak to that, but I did grab a massive burrito at the taqueria. And that massive burrito was really good! I went with the al pastor super burrito filled with rice, beans, pico, protein, cheese and guacamole (I forewent the sour cream) and all for less than $10. The meat was a tad dry, but I do appreciate that they're not shy with it with big chunks of pork; this thing was meaty! The menu consists of the usual suspects: tacos, burritos, tortas and so on with a small salsa bar and fresh juices available. A few tables and a long community bar table to enjoy your eats, Mi Tierra is a hidden gem for a quick, cheap, filling and delicious Mexican bite!
This is a review of the grocery store. I haven't tried the restaurant, and given what I've seen, I'm not likely to. Seriously, if a health inspector were to pass through here, I think they'd be in trouble. I stop by maybe every other week for Mexican staples and other odds and ends, but I can't imagine buying produce there again. I've never gotten a jug of milk that stayed good more than two days, or cheese that made it more than three. Every time I go, at least one entire shelf (the strawberries were the most recent) is caked in mold. I'm too nervous to try the meat, which always looks a little sad / oxidized. Maybe if I were planning to throw it immediately on the grill... The other major issue I'll occasionally get a receipt that has an item doubled on it. Even though they've always corrected it, the amount it seems to annoy them, and the frequency with which it happens, make it suspicious. I hope they figure out a way to keep their produce safe and fix their refrigerator cases. It's a tough sell when both Berkeley Bowl West and Whole Foods are each a 5 minute bike ride away and are always immaculate. If you're in a pinch, stop in, buy something packaged and preserved and check your recept.
anyone who dosen't give this place 5 stars is outta his/her mind. so thankful they are here. Joe C south berkeley
This used to be my favorite place for fish burritos, but after coming here for months and getting a fish burrito and jarritos for 11.99 I come in today and the lady behind the counter, who isn't the normal person, starts talking to me like I'm crazy and says they don't do that. The cook, who is much older than the usual younger guy, tries to tell me it takes more fish, I said fine I'd pay it but he didn't want to make it. I show the receipts and she says she can't do that. I say fine even though I'm now unhappy and I order two fish tacos with rice, beans, cheese, guacamole, and sour cream and a jarritos for here, and it's 14.99. Then, after a longer than usual wait, they give me my food in a plastic container and ask if it's to go, I said no and at this point I am just disturbed by the lack of listening and customer service failure so I left without a bag. This is usually one of the few places you get what you pay for and I always order extra meat with the burritos because it's like 4oz portions or something. The super Mercado part is ok and I haven't been to the butcher yet. I guess it was just an off day...
So this review is for the restaurant area of the joint. So I have been to this place a lot of times over the years we have bought carne asada and tripe for menudo and other fresh meats. But today we were short some queso fresco for the chicharrones in Chile verde moms made, so me and my chick said let's go there instead of cardenas on high street! So we enter and my chick says she also wants some Mexican style rice and did I think they would sell her some? I said in a laughable manner " of coarse they will silly! They sell prepared food there also!" I'm in line paying for the cheese which was marvelous, and we meet at the front door and I ask where's your rice? She tells me the lady behind the counter said they don't sell just rice but they sold just beans??? WTF!!! Sorry for that but are you kidding me??? U won't sell us just some rice!!! So if I could give the food area negative stars I would.
This is regarding their new taqueria, I am a person who does not eat beef or pork. But in five visits to this taqueria ordering vegetarian or chicken (tacos and burritos, which are nice when they get the order right), they keep giving me cow and pig instead! I am so done trying to go here. If you don't want a cow or pig, you better shout and clap in their face, to get their attention, or they will just nod along and give you pig meat. I give them 3 stars because when they make the right order, it is pretty good, and the grocery store itself is nice.
Sadly, the last few times I got chicken nachos, they were not very good anymore. Chicken was bland, without the charred smoky taste that it used to have - clearly they changed how they cook it. I might still go back to try other dishes with different meats but unfortunately my former favorite is no longer an option. Their grocery store is still worth going to once in awhile for Mexican novelties like popsicles, sodas, and Takis.
I love this market! Have been going for years, but I just introduced my partner to it and he made me realize how truly awesome this place is; the selection has gotten better over the years and everyone working there is always so friendly and helpful! Word of advice - MUST try their homemade salsa. OMG. We literally pour it on everything because it compliments various flavors so well. Yum.
Just a great neighborhood market/bodega. And the addition of the cafe took it up a notch (they cater too). Good produce and meat selection and baked desserts plus a variety of stuff in between. And don't forget the piñatas. Friendly staff too.
Been going to Mi Tierra for my last minute grocery shopping and have had good experiences in the past. however, today will definitely be my last time shopping here. The cashier/Manager Jose was very rude! I honestly don't even know how he became a manager in the first place because he comes across as immature and does not know what he's doing. I think the best position for him would be behind the scenes( mopping floors or packing shelves).
I tend to prefer Berkeley Bowl for my routine (hard to beat that place) but Mi Tierra is good for quick trips and last minute needs. They have a small but helpful organic section as well as all of the basic necessities you could want in a small grocery. The butcher counter is well stocked and they have friendly helpful folks working here. Obviously a big focus on Latino foods and products.
ugh last few times I have been there, they didn't have the hot salsa that I and my coworkers like. I feel like that salsa won us over more than the burrito itself thats why we have completely stopped going. please bring the salsa back.
i ordered a super steak buritoe a few months back it was great. Then i ordered a super pastor burritoe 2/24/18 and it was sad. a watery creature. small tiny pieces of , low quantity , blandish, boiled pastor meat. prefer bar b q or grilled. watery beans, to much juice in the rice, watered down guac, cheese, and sour cream. I wont order burritoes here again. i could have asked for a cup of hot water put the burritoe in a bowl and made pork something soup out of it.
