Q:
What time does the kitchen close? Thanks!
A:
Since Mekelburg's closes at 2am Sun-Thus and 4am Fri-Sat, my guess is that the kitchen closes 1h before that.
Matteo R.6 years agoQ:
How is Mekelburg's catering? Have you had the sandwiches catered? All good? Any favorites?
A:
No, never had catering from them. But their fried chicken sandwich is amazing!

I have been meaning to check out Mekelburg's for months and unfortunately was disappointed once I did.
The chef must be extremely allergic to flavor and all spices because the food had no taste. The $15 roast beef sandwich was a medium to small sized, cold sandwich served in a plastic basket with no sides. The ingredients did taste fresh, but I felt like I was eating just roast beef, arugula, and plain bread. This is nothing that the most culinary-challenged customer would not be able to make at home for a fraction of the cost and hopefully with more flavor. The lentil soup was bland as can be, and I had to add a ridiculous amount of salt to make it edible. Had I gotten it delivered or to go, I would have unquestionably dumped a few other much needed spices into it. The white fish crostini was actually the best part of dinner, but we are talking about a tiny strip of bread that comes with the soup and should not be the star of the show. I was hoping to try the roasted oysters, but we were informed that they were out, which judging by other reviews is the case quite often. A glass smaller than a pint is labeled as a large, and beer that I have seen at many other locations in Brooklyn for half the price will cost you about $15 here.
This is tiny, dark restaurant with a basement feel to it located behind a grocery store. I understand the allure of the unique, laidback setting, but I cannot even begin to understand these prices when the quality simply does not match the cost.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0Business owner information

Dear Nataliya,
Thank you so much for your coming to our place and trying our food.
To state that you can get a beer we are selling for half the price at any other bar is a ridiculous thing to say. The beer that you drank at our place could not be purchased for half the price anywhere in Brooklyn.
I hope you come back and try some other things and give us a chance.. I would be more than happy as would any of our bar staff to show you how to accurately navigate our beer list. We have 8, 12 and 16 ounce sizes.. Nothing is called large or small or anything of that nature. We have a wonderful list, we offer tastes, we can provide information about the brewery where the beer was made, how the beer was produced and even a lesson in the style of which is was made..
We take pride in what we do and I feel terrible you didn't have anything other than a great time. Please give us another shot if you are ever in the neighborhood
Kind Regards,

Mek's is my version of Friends Central Perk or HIMYM McLaren's Bar. It's where me and my friends come hangout, grab a drink and relax. The vibe is excellent, they usually have the game on or good music. They allow dogs, which is awesome, and they have board games (!!) not too many tho.
The food is typical diner~ food, so it can run heavy, and tbh (because we often grab drinks here) pricey. My favorite two things to get here are the mozzarella sticks (with their homemade blue cheese-- yum) and their frozen painkillers. It's the perfect summertime snack.
They also have a variety of other thing so the menu (sandwiches, salads, soups...). These are good, but really you come here for the vibe. And don't forget to check out their Happy Hour and weekday deals!Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - 606256579Jan 14, 2024Updated review
The most recent time I came to order a hot chicken sandwich it was mostly fried batter and barely any chicken :( this visit was a flop

This might be a southern thing, but I'm always in the mood for a sandwich spot and I feel like most places in NYC to get a good sandwich is a bodega. Nothing wrong with that but sometimes you want to sit down at a cafe or something and have some between the bread options! I'm happy to say I've found that here!
I see why this meatloaf sandwich has some hype, it's absolutely delicious and totally hit the spot on a rainy cold day. The red sauce is sweeter than I was expecting but I'm not mad about it, it completely tingled my taste buds and marries well with the creamy ricotta, soft yet crunchy baguette and moist, Betty yet delicate meatloaf balls.
Honestly, a half of a Sammy was the perfect portion for me. I'm stuffed but just pleasantly so.
The sweet potato fries were a bit thicker than I'm use to but they were yummy. I think if I got this combo again I'd get a salad though. The sandwich was already a bit sweet and the sweet potato combo was a bit too much for me.
The interior is cozy and casual, perfect for lunch but also seems like a great spot to grab a casual dinner or late night bite. I see they have quite the selection of beers too, I'll have to come back!
It's also very neat that the front of the restaurant serves as a specialty grocery store. Nice to browse and pick up something special before/after some nosh.
I didn't step outside but it looks like they have both a back patio and front street seating.
Service was great. Super friendly and fast.
I have no complaints and I'm glad to start adding this to my neighborhood rotation.

Sandwiches were DELICIOUS. ONE worker was not so nice. This place has been on my Yelp list for a long time. While finally in area, I decided to stop by. As it was my first time, I wasn't sure where to order. We walk in and approach the bar. The person behind the bar looked up and then continued what they were doing. I Stood there for about 10 minutes as the person passed us numerous times. Never acknowledged us at any point. She was making drinks but at no point did she even try to make eye contact. I finally decided to ask if we could order takeout with her. She COLDLY replied without even looking my way.
We decided to NOT order with her and go to the front. David was was great and this review is in no way a reflection of him. He greeted us and promptly took our order.
I should also mention that I am law enforcement (my attire showed) and I can only ASSUME the treatment was due to that. Since everyone else was spoken to with a smile by her and only we were not. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning due to that.
But the sandwiches were great. I had the hot chicken and my partner had the Provo whiz wit.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kelsey R.Brooklyn, NY3362255Jan 11, 2024
Immersed in great vibes, this Clinton Hill restaurant has become my go-to spot for a casual and delightful brunch experience. Without fail, I find myself drawn to the exquisite eggs benedict on their menu, a consistently satisfying choice. Beyond the delicious fare, the establishment offers a fantastic beer selection, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the dining experience. Nestled in the heart of Clinton Hill, this restaurant effortlessly blends a laid-back atmosphere with delicious brunch options and an impressive beer lineup, making it a reliable and enjoyable choice for those seeking a memorable mid-morning meal.

Several friends and I went out for dinner. Afterwards we decided to stop in at Mekelburg's for some beers.
Their food menu isn't very elaborate, but we had already just eaten so that's not what we were interested in. What DID tweak our interest was the beer selection - they have over eighteen different beers on tap!
We each sampled several different beers and I enjoyed mine quite a bit. I was still full from dinner, but one of my friends had the Mac & Cheese with shell noodles and I tried a bite - very tasty :-)Helpful 8Thanks 1Love this 7Oh no 1 - Sep 26, 2022
We were told to come for breakfast/brunch but feel like it's better for just lunch or even dinner/drinks.
Wasn't totally sure we were in the right place as the kitchen is tucked in behind the store up front. But everyone was friendly even though we were clearly tourists and acting lost.
I got the steak and eggs which came with a latke and side salad. A ton of food and the steak was really well cooked. Would definitely get it again, lots of flavor to the dish. My wife got the avocado toast which was...I mean it's fine, it's avocado toast.
Would definitely come back though, looked like a great menu. Was tough to choose what to eat.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

I've been to the location in Williamsburg several times, and I thought I should try this location since some friends recently moved nearby.
We showed up around 1:30 on a Sunday. We were able to seat ourselves immediately but were told they were only doing drinks for the next 5-10 mins because the kitchen was backed up. I'm totally understanding of that-- I assumed someone must have called out because the restaurant wasn't packed by any means. It ended up being about 25 minutes before they allowed people to take orders. My main qualm with that was that the people who had been waiting weren't prioritized. I saw a couple who sat down maybe 5 mins before the kitchen reopened who was able to order right away while we waited another 10 mins in line to order.
Once we ordered, it was about 45 mins to an hour to get our food. Each person was served when their food was ready rather than the entire table at the same time. For example, one person got their food a full 15 minutes before I did (both were hot dishes). They also forgot one of our dishes but we were already tired from being there for 3 hours that we didn't feel the need to wait for it and shared someone else's.
That being said, the food was delicious once we received it. The bacon was way too greasy though, and we had to dab each piece down with two napkins (you can see how much grease was leftover in the basket in the photo).
My main issue aside from the above was ordering the chicken and waffles. On the menu, there is a Belgian waffle that comes with peaches and cream where they upsell you to make it 'chicken and waffles' for $20. In addition, there is a chicken and waffles dish for $19. Since I wanted the peaches and cream, I asked for the Belgian waffle but to make it the $20 chicken and waffles. When it came out, it was just chicken and waffles -- nothing that was listed to come under the Belgian waffle. I asked the service team, and they said that you don't get the peaches and cream if you order the upsell version. I was confused because I don't understand why one option is $1 more if there is no difference in the dish to where I was told "I don't know- I don't make the rules" with a shrug. It just doesn't make sense to me.
In addition, someone at our table tried to order from the "all day every day" menu, and he was told they weren't serving that menu and only the brunch menu. Why have it say "all day" and that it's served everyday if it's not?
Overall, while the food was good once we got it, I was embarrassed to have recommended it to my friends and would not return to this location.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hello,
So sorry, you had to wait so long for brunch. Please understand that Clinton Hill is very seasonal. We go from Pratt University being closed to another 30 k people in a small block radius. We in recent weeks have implemented a new brunch menu it took us a couple of weeks to adjust with our new staff and new menu. I apologize that we were not ready to go immediately. There was a period of adjustment between staffing, ordering and executing. I am sorry you were there for this transitional period.
I assure you that 40 minutes is not the normal wait time and your experience was not the norm. So happy at least the food was well executed but, so sorry about the wait.
If you ever do come back, my name is Daniel Mekelburg, I am happy to introduce myself and try and make it up to you.
Thank you,

Best meatloaf sandwich I've had. Prices are slightly higher than other shops but the flavor makes up for it imo.
