This place makes me sad. I have long been a fan of Maru's Lansing locations, and have appreciated as they expand to Grand rapids and Midland. However, the Midland location continues to underperform my expectations of both Maru and restaurant service in general. We often order carryout using their online system; but typically have to wait an additional 20 to 40 minutes beyond the promised pickup time, already 60 or 90 minutes out from time of order. Even arriving after the promised pick up time, you stand around their lack of a waiting area, twiddling your thumbs until they can get around to your food.
Historically, their rolls were inspired, with interesting fish and takes on sushi. Increasingly, the rolls are bland, using sauces to suppress subpar fish, and flashy presentation to compensate for actual flavor. For the cost of rolls here, you can get much better quality at Fuji sushi and at a lower price.
My latest experience was the proverbial straw. Went in to pick up a medium sized order for a party. Gave the hostess my name, and she disappeared. 10 minutes later I had to ask someone else what happened to her. I was told they were still preparing my food, which would have been fine, but also would have been nice to know. 20 additional minutes later I was finally given my food, as well as a 10% discount for waiting. This was nice! However, as soon as I got back home and unpacked the bag, we realized they had not included the most expensive roll. Upon calling, I was told they could make the roll, but we would have to wait an additional hour to pick it up because they were still busy. Since they could not deliver and were requiring me to go back to pick up the roll they had missed. I asked them to comp an additional California roll for my time. Upon returning, the hostess told me my Cali roll was not being comped, 'because they had already given me the discount.' This was the discount for already taking 2 hours to prepare my online order, half an hour longer than expected.
Sushi is a hard thing to do in the interior of Michigan, far away from supply chains and high demand. Unfortunately, this location still seems to underperform that low bar. We will be skipping the drama next time in Midland, instead going to Fuji. Not quite as showy, but their food is better, cheaper, and actually arrives.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 20, 2023
The ambiance here is bright and airy, and there is plenty of seating. The firecracker shrimp was great, and we were pleasantly surprised with how many shrimps come in one order. The presentation on the plates was really pretty. The rolls were good and there was a unique variety to choose from; I think they use more rice compared to other sushi places I've been to which I personally am not a huge fan of. Price is quite high so it's definitely a splurge.

Excellent sushi AND they had a deal for mimosa flights which came with the whole bottle of Prosecco! Lovely.

Sushi roll and Rangoon were very good. Nice presentation. Stingy with water refills. Cocktails are 1/2 the size of other restaurants, but similar price. Recommend skipping the cocktails and ordering the specials.

I wish I could give half stars here but since I can't, I rounded up. Here is how the meal shook out:
Not so great:
- Slow service when first seated. It was not busy and it took a long time for the server to come by for beverage order. When my water, yes, just water showed up, I was ready to order but he darted off to take another table's order.
- The ambiance was nice but I got an odd feeling about the place. I eat alone quite often and never have I ever felt that uncomfortable in a restaurant. No server or manager made eye contact with me. I felt like I was a bother in their day just being there.
What was good:
- Side salad was the best I have ever had and I should know - I go out for sushi at least once a week
- the two rolls I ordered were also very goodHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - May 10, 2023
Maru was very very good. It's got a nice atmosphere with windows all around the perimeter floor to ceiling. It has a very nice bar and their old fashion was fantastic. Tried two their rolls but for the life of me I can't remember what they were called. All I can say is they were fantastic. One was very spicy just as the menu said it would be. The other one was just creamy and delicate and delicious. I felt the prices were very reasonable too. Each roll was very large and I did not leave hungry at all. I will definitely be back.

Six of us went to dinner for my birthday last week. Our teenage kids love sushi and we were excited to celebrate.
I had made a reservation earlier in the week, but our table wasn't quite ready. The hostess was super accommodating and tried to find another place for us. We didn't have to wait long. I ordered a Tokyo mule at the bar. It was made with Sake and was delicious.
We started with the crab Rangoon dip, firecracker shrimp, and goyza. All three were great! Our kids loved the dip and I have plans to try to recreate it at home. We then ordered a ton of sushi. Delicious! Everyone had their own favorite. Mine was the blue mango (I think that's the name). Spicy and fruity. We ended up sharing two desserts although I was disappointed they were out of crème brûlée. We chose the vanilla cheesecake and the chocolate truffle.
Our server was great and our food was delicious. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for sushi.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Martina C.Escanaba, MI31814Jan 15, 2023
We had an excellent experience at Maru in Midland. We were seated immediately, our server was amazing, the sushi was spot on, and the bottle of wine went absolutely perfect with our meal (Touraine Sauvignon Blanc from Loire Valley). It was the best sushi I have had in a long time. We ordered the following rolls: Ex-girlfriend, Miss Saigon (had the perfect kick) and Cosmo (my favorite of the night, very fresh) I can't say a bad thing about our entire stay at Maru.

Exceptional!
The restaurant is open and airy, with an understated contemporary/zen decor. They are not breaking any new ground with the style, but I appreciate the bright and uncluttered atmosphere and the aesthetics.
The real standout on the menu are the signature rolls. They are wonderfully orchestrated with combinations of seafood and sauces that complement each other, garniture, and were beautifully presented. The quality of the fish was excellent, the service was attentive, yet non-intrusive.
An excellent dining experience and I will be back soon.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
