The dumplings (mandoo) being made at the front of the restaurant and by the window, lured me in. Colorful green and white dough stuffed and manipulated into dumplings intrigued me and I knew I had to try.
I love K-town and most restaurants are usually busy and packed with a lot of activity taking place. I was lucky to get a table for lunch at the average sized Mandoo and was in the mood for soup.
Aside from their dumplings, they also serve traditional Korean fare. Ramen soup was my selection since I was getting through a cold. The spicy mandoo ramen soup offered vegetarian and non vegetarian options. In addition to ramen noodles, the soup included two mandoo dumplings. The chance to try them. My selection was vegetarian and shortly after placing my order, the soup arrived.
At $10, it was a hearty bowl of soup with a robust, spicy broth, fresh wavy noodles, vegetables and dumplings. I really liked it.
I might be in the minority, but I was not wowed by the dumplings. The dough was too thick for my liking and the filling wasn't that flavorful. But overall, I enjoyed my soup
I would return.Helpful 25Thanks 0Love this 26Oh no 0 - Jan 28, 2020
Not returning.
I had lunch but accidentally passed by it. When I saw the two ladies making dumplings in the window, I walked in. It reminds me of the Dumpling House at 328 Spadina Ave, Â in Toronto - a must for me whenever I visited there.Â
The decor is simple and neat. I ordered small portion of chive pork dumpling (App Mewl Mandoo). Thick skin and the filling is too solid (packed, feeling dead), totally subpar.
My adventure for a good dumpling place in New York, Continues.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 4153091289Jan 19, 2020
I first dined at Mandoo Bar back in 2010 and I'm so glad they reopened after the 2-alarm fire back in April 2019. It's one of my favorite places to get dumplings in Korea Town.
Mandoo Bar is famous for its dumplings (Mool Mandoo's and the Goon Mandoos). Mool Mandoo's are boiled dumplings filled with pork and vegetables and the Good Mandoo's are lightly fried dumplings filled with pork and vegetables.
If you intend on visiting this restaurant I highly recommend you order some sort of dumpling from here. And, if you do not eat pork, they offer Vegetable Mool Mandoo's and Vegetable Goon Mandoo's. The prices range from $6 dollars to $16 dollars.
I always order the goon mandoo and share an order of Bulgogi Dolsot Bibimbap (a hot beef, rice and veggie dish).
The staff members are always super friendly, attentive, and quick.
If you plan on coming with a party of 2-4 the wait time is minimal.
If you do have to wait, I suggest hanging out in front of the restaurant and watch the amazing dumpling creation.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Nov 8, 2019
I decided to come here because I coworker said their Mandoo was great but it kind of fell short of my expectations.
THE OKAY:
Yuk Gae Jang Soup (Spicy) [~$6.50] - Spicy Beef Soup with green onion and egg. This was pretty spicy as I had to blow my nose a few times while eating but it's pretty good. Great flavor but there's not a lot of beef in this soup. I probably saw like 2 tiny pieces of beef in this whole bowl but lots of green onion and some glass noodles. [3 STAR]
Kimchi Mandoo - (steamed dumplings with kimchi, tofu, pork, vegetables). I choose this because yelpers here said this was good. I love kimchi and Korean food in general but the kimchi dumplings here tasted sour. This was not a good kind of sour taste. I also didn't like the texture of the dumpling with the tofu in the middle. The tofu was mashed up or ground up + the sour kimchi filling was a bad combo. There was 10 dumplings and this was approx $11.50 making it a little over $1 a dumpling. I actually prefer Chinese pork and cabbage dumplings and the xiao long baos more. It's tastier and it costs less. You can get like $1.25 for like 4 dumplings in Chinatown. [1 STAR]
Complimentary Banchan - there's only salad and pickled cucumbers here. It's a little lacking compared to other Korean restaurants in the area. I guess I have been spoiled by Five Senses and BCD Tofu with the large amounts of banchan options.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Aug 3, 2018
So me, my sisters and co workers decided to check out Mandoo Bar in K-town.
Ratings :
The food was really good definitely will rate it a 4 out of 5 !
Butttttt.....
All the food came out scattered,
My friend got her ramen 30 min before we got our food that we waited for...about an hour and a half. We noticed new people coming in and getting their food before us this is a big NO NO...
Service was a 2, Jay our first server was polite but he forgot about our food...this was told by Jake. The server that helped us out when we were patiently waiting for our food.
Ambiance: The music and decor is chill, loved it especially after a long day of work
Might come back...might not but all in all Thank you for the yummy food.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 30, 2018
DANK DUMPLINGS!
My go-to place now for dumplings when I'm in Koreatown. As you open the door to enter the dumpling shop, you can see the dumplings being hand-made. TALK ABOUT HELLA FRESH!
The atmosphere is clean and spacious for new york city haha
Couldn't decided between boil or fried dumplings so we ordered both! haha
MOOL MANDOO: boiled pork and veggie dumplings
Super yummy and juicy. Packed with a lot of pork and veggies! Glad that the dumpling skin was THICC and held the filling inside well.
GOON MANDOO: fried pork and veggie dumplings
Hands down MY FAVORITE compared to the boiled dumplings. It had the right amount of crispiness and not oily nor greasy.
They also provided free Korean sides such as salad and pickled radish. I wasn't a fan of the salad but my boyfriend loves it. I enjoyed the pickled radish - goes well with the dumplings.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Mar 3, 2019
Came in within the last hour and was greeted by a server that immediately told us that the kitchen was closing soon and we'd have to order in a few minutes. Okay, no problem. I've worked in service before and understand the workers want to go home on time. My friend and I scanned the menu real quick and decided on the dduk boki since it said it was enough to serve 2 people.
We were seated at a 4-top and after we ordered, one of the servers basically threw some cutlery on our table, not even in front of us, but in the empty seats next to us. Okay... Then came the salad with some cabbage, carrots, and dressing. No kimchi at a Korean restaurant? Really? Even the stalls at the Food Gallery across offer kimchi and pickled radish.
The dduk boki itself was alright, nothing special but not bad. I paid the check as soon as the food came but didn't stay long cause I didn't feel very welcomed. In the end my friend and I packed the food to go.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 31, 2019
More spacious than it looks from the outside. I thought the dumplings here would be more like the usual Korean filling style with tofu and glass noodles mixed in, but surprisingly it wasn't. Was seated pretty quickly at 7pm, but service is pretty slow. It's good that they offer smaller portions of the dumplings at half the price so you can pick another small appetizer to mix and match and it would still be filling. All orders are served with a salad with carrot dressing, and the pickled onion chili pepper soy sauce dipping sauce for the dumplings. There are more condiments if you prefer plain soy sauce or hot sauce instead.
Ordered:
- Goonmandu (small, 4pcs) ($5.50) - pretty good, decent amount of filling inside, mostly pork and chives. (4/5 rating)
- Yukgaejang ($6) - has egg, burdock root, beansprouts, green onion, kelp and a bit of beef, not much. Wasn't too spicy, filling if you order another side dish with it. (3.5/5 rating)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 3, 2020
I cam here with a large group (9) of colleagues. We were celebrating a friend leaving and wanted somewhere casual yet fun and this delivered. The ambiance was similar to a Japanese beer hall, the dumplings or mandoo were made in front of the restaurant.
We ordered a slew of dumplings that came out in a very timely manner. We slathered them in the gojuchang (?) sauce and soy sauce that was on the table. They pork dumplings were moist and delicious, although I do wish there was more salt to them. They were really good, but nothing fantastic that makes me feel like I HAVE to come back. These are a different type of dumpling from the Shanghainese or Cantonese in that these are fried with a large pillowy doughy surrounding. The dumplings were fine, we also ordered soju to complement the dumplings, which was a good choice. There were vegetarian and other meat options for those of us who did not eat meat.
Overall, it was pretty good and our group enjoyed. Don't think I will be back individually, but it was fine for an evening out.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 333821267Jun 19, 2020
Mandoo bar is located at the start of block long Koreatown. It features a variety of Korean dishes but it features Korean dumplings (Mandoo). Patrons can watch the cooks make mandoo dumplings from the store front window which is a nice touch. Even when there isn't some one there, they have a video of the mandoo making process for you to watch.
Old bean really wanted to have some rice so we decided to order a hot stone bowl (bibimbap). It had a variety of veggies including zucchini, carrots, onions and shiitake mushrooms as well as a good portion of ground beef. The portion was smaller than what we're used to back in Vancouver but it was pretty tasty overall.
Since we were at a mandoo bar, naturally we had to order some to try! We decided to go with the mini mandoo so they were half the size of regular ones. We regretted this a little bit because the mandoo ended up being too much dough and you could barely taste the filling inside. The mandoo wrapper was very soft and chewy which was surprising since we are used to them being soft. It came with a soy based dipping sauce.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
