About the Business
Why do we use the phrase "Hecho en Homewood (or Hoover or Montgomery)?" Because that's what happens in Little Donkey kitchens. We do everything right here, from the grinding of our corn to the forming and pressing of our tortillas to the mixing and stirring of our sweet dessert sauces. Born out of a love for the vibrant flavors and brilliant combinations that traditional Mexican cooks have created for centuries, our restaurant celebrates regional cuisine in all its many forms: family food, comfort food, party food, and soul food. So no matter what brings you in, you're sure to find our fare perfect for any occasion. We'll serve it to you with a Southern twist -- because as much as we love paying homage to the traditions and tastes of Mexico, we love paying homage to our sweet Alabama home even more.

The food, service and ambiance were perfect for our lunch. There were 3 in our party and all tried a different menu option. The fried chicken was delicious and so were the salad and fajitas.
Sadie was our server and she did an outstanding job taking care of us!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Robin S.Pine Level, AL01Feb 24, 2024
Sadie was a ray of sunshine! Absolutely awesome service and the food was delicious. Definitely recommend!

I have had Little Donkey on my list of try for years. I moved away from Birmingham so that is a big reason why it has been years but I had an opportunity on a Sunday passing through.
Little Donkey's slogan is "Mexican Food with Southern Soul." Your Mexican favorites are on the menu but so is Fried Chicken and BBQ.
If you are wanting a cheap Mexican place where you can eat your fill of salsa and chips with a few dollars to spend on tacos and such, this isn't the place. It costs $4 for salsa and chips but they even that out with having 4 different types to choose from. We chose the 2 mildest ones - Rojo and Verde. Both salsas were phenomenal! The Verde I liked a little more as it had a more rich taste to it.
We also ordered the Queso and it was good, but nothing special especially for the price tag on it.
My wife and I game-planned to get the most we could out of Little Donkey. I chose the Fried Chicken Sandwich with Mexican Corn while my wife ordered the Brisket Quesadilla.
My wife enjoyed her Brisket Quesadilla. The BBQ sauce on the side was unique as it was more like a jam.
There was a lot of hoopla to Little Donkey's Fried Chicken. The manager told me I was going to enjoy it and the menu gave it a lot of praise. However, mine was too tough to chew, inedible, and almost flavorless except for the Wickles Pickles.
I asked my server if she could help me out and told her what my dilemma was. She got me another sandwich and the 2nd one was a lot more juicy and easy to chew.
Little Donkey went the extra mile after the chicken sandwich flop as they not only fixed the chicken sandwich, but gave us churros! My wife, stepson, and I agreed these were the best churros we've ever had! The manager knew it was my first time and he didn't want it to be my last time!
Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet!
The service I received at Little Donkey helped it out a lot. They fixed my food when I asked for their help and threw in the best part of the meal - churros! The salsas and churros were the best part! Everything else was all right but I would come back to Little Donkey because of the helpfulness of the service.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Feb 27, 2024
I hadn't been to this location since they moved from their other Homewood location and it was really nice inside. Much larger.
I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. We had a reservation for a large group so were able to be seated quickly. But they must be severely understaffed. The place was busy I will give them that but everything took forever.
We had been there about an hour and hadn't even been asked to order. It took a long time to even get the chance to order our drinks and then took about 30 more minutes before we were able to order. I think it took 2.5 hours and half of that was us trying to order.
Frozen margarita was good, queso and chips were good and my meal was okay. I got the chicken burrito bowl. They were out of two of the drinks on the menu.
I will give it one more try and am hoping it was an off night but that wait to order was crazyHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 5, 2024
Somewhere between 3-4 stars. Maybe I'd be more confident the 4 stars if I ate there rather than getting our order to-go.
The interior appeared to be lovely, and the workers I met were all very pleasant. Our order was prompt and fresh.
We got the "Queso Con Carne," and I was not a fan. The amount of oil on top was unappealing. I tried pouring some off and then mixing it to help. Sadly, it didn't. It lacked any spice or real flavor. The occasional piece of brisket was delicious though. But I would not get this again. We also got 2 of the salsas, and I did enjoy these! The chips were good...occasionally too salty...but good.
We got 3 tacos. I ate the fish one. It was okay. I appreciate the homemade tortillas. That's always a win in my book (and maybe why I'm rounding up my stars). Overall it lacked some depth in flavor. Needed more seasoning. The slaw on top was heavy and somewhat sweet. I wish it had some brightness to it to balance out the fried fish and of course would love some spice. We also got a side of the corn, which comes still on the cob. Seemed like a small amount for $5, but it was yummy!
All in all, I won't come out of our way to order from here again. Maybe we will give them another try whenever we can dine in. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and rounding up!

Holy Moly the smoked brisket quesadilla is incredible! I wish I had a second stomach so I could have finished it. Delicious.
On a Saturday night around 7pm we waited for a table 30 minutes and now I know why- this place makes great food!
Food is a five, atmosphere a four. Service was satisfactory.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 31, 2023
I DON'T WANT TO TACO BOUT IT!
Birmingham that has tons of Mexican restaurants in and around the city. Some great, some just okay and some down right bad.
Little Donkey has been on my list for a good while now, though I have heard some mixed reviews through the grapevine. It being a part of the Pihakas restaurant group, I was really expecting it to be grand, but in all reality it was just okay. For those unfamiliar the Pihakas Restaurant group is a restaurant chains that all fall under the same bracket or umbrella as each other. Some other restaurants in this group are: Rodney Scott's, Hero Doughnuts, and the newest one being the Greek concept Tasty Town. All of these restaurants have the same overall values and culture, which is awesome and great for an upcoming city like Birmingham.
After contemplating where to go to dinner tonight with some friends, we had landed on The Battery in Homewood, but when we got there it was crazy busy. So we decided on heading to Little Donkey instead. It was crowded, but not super crowded, given it being a Friday night around 7:15 pm. Once we walked up to the front door a nice young lady came over and held the door open for us. It was very kind and unexpected. Southern hospitality at its finest here.
Once we were seated we were introduced to a nice young lady as our waitress, her name was Ryan. When she asked to take our drink menu, we were not ready, but so she walked away to grab us some waters. In the mean time another lady came over and asked us the same question. She took over our table and shoved Ryan out of the way. I did not like that. Not one bit.
Jasmine and I both ordered some cocktails to kick off the meal. I got the Fresca Spritz and she got the bushwacker. She had asked our waitress which of the frozen drinks to get and she told Jasmine the bushwacker was top tier. Once we got our drinks, we then ordered apps and food. The bushwacker Jasmine did not like and our waitress was on top of us hounding us about it our entire meal.
The apps we got were the guacamole and quesso. The guacamole did not have any salt or real true flavor to it whatsoever, and the quesso was bland and very watered down. I would like to compare this quesso to the quesso at chipotle. Watery and nasty. It does not take much to add some seasoning to the top of the quesso for a little extra color and flavor.
Shockingly everyone ordered a bowl. Jasmine got the spicy bowl which again our waitress recommended and told her that it had a kick. Langston ordered the smoked pork burrito bowl and I got the smoked chicken burrito bowl. Jasmine commented that her bowl did not just have a kick to it she felt as though she was eating fire. No matter what she added to it, the spiciness was not letting up.
I was really hoping to like Little Donkey as I have enjoyed all of the other Pihakas Res Group restaurants, but this one was not a top tier experience for me. From Jasmine being told to order different things and not liking them, to a waitress pushing another waitress out of the way to grab a certain table of people. This was not an enjoyable experience. I will have to say, the waitress did notice Jasmine not liking her cocktail and winded up comping it from the check, which was definitely a perk, but not enough of a perk to award another star to this rating.
Glad I gave Little Donkey a try, but I will not be coming back.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Mia G.Birmingham, AL01Apr 6, 2024Updated review
Sandie is lit! She provides great service. She's vibrant and read the table well. Most waiters at Little Donkey can be stale and seem timid but Sandie is amazing.

If you're like me, you're here on Yelp looking for a good place to eat in your current location. If you're in Homewood (Birmingham area), you must check out the original Little Donkey in Homewood. This restaurant is a hidden gem. The food is phenomenal and the service is top notch. The menu offers Mexican dishes with a Southern flare.
Our server Ella recommended several dishes which were thoroughly enjoyed. Recommendations from Ella included Smoked Brisket Quesadilla (this was huge - great if you're hungry), and Fish Tacos with Corn Tortillas (delicious). Our group also enjoyed Chips and Queso, Smoked Chicken Quesadilla, Mexican Street Corn (get it on the cob - amazing!) and a Chicken Tender Kid's Meal.
The manager, Cedric, came over and checked on us several times along with our server Ella. Our drinks were kept full, which was much appreciated. At the end of our meal, Cedric had our leftovers boxed up and bagged so we could take it with us.
Lovely ambiance with chill vibes! We'll be back!!
