Well, for starters, he is indeed sort of a d*ck. But so what. I suffered from terrible depression for years, trying a dozen or so meds, before seeing him. He immediately put me on Lamotrigine and, within days, I was feeling far, FAR better. And this has continued for a decade. I wouldn't care if he was the biggest prick on earth (he's not), given the results. That's all that matters, not vacuous conversation. Depression is THE BEAST and he helped me immensely!

STAY AWAY - A Pyscho psychiatrist: Dr. Rubin is by far the worst doctor I have ever met. If you want a rude, condescending doctor who won't explain anything and gets pissed when you ask questions he's your guy.
I'm a 25 year old woman and I started seeing him about 2 years ago for depression and he has always been sarcastic and has given me an attitude. First of all, He doesn't explain anything about the medicine you are taking and doesn't seem to care about anything but getting you out of his office with a prescription.
Today I went there because my medicine he prescribed was making me nauseous and I was still feeling very depressed. My sister who is studying psychology and is very concerned about my well being wanted to hear our discussion so she can make sure I am getting the help I need. I asked if I could call her so she can listen in.
He got mad and defensive and starting raising his voice that I don't trust him and that he doesn't want her listening to our conversation. This isn't about him its about me. She is concerned about me and she wants to know what's going on. He said oh you can do that on your own time now here!
This was my third prescription I have tried and I was still feeling very depressed. He prescribed a new medicine and only told me one side effect so I decided to google it. Then my sister was texting me making sure I ask him questions and he started raising his voice again asking what I was doing and telling me to stop texting her. Excuse me! I am paying for this session and this is about me getting better not him! I was so startled with the way he was treating me that I got up and left. He said ok give me back the medicine you don't need that. So he left a depressed person with suicidal thoughts without medicine because he has some sort of ego problem. He wouldn't give me a prescription either.
I left and came back and asked for the medicine because he should provide me with it since I am paying for the session. He said "you are very entitled to crazy things" "you have a lot of problems" "you never like any medicine I give you" yeah I'm entitled! I'm entitled to get the prescription that I am paying for! He has one job- literally one job.
I told him that he made me feel uncomfortable and he said "apparently a lot of people make you feel uncomfortable!" So he was making fun of me. What kind of doctor does makes fun of their patients and tells them they have problems?! I told him he was most definitely the worst doctor I have ever met and his response "oh I'm sure you will meet much worse. " so this guy is basically an asshole Pyscho doctor who doesn't care about his patients. I am all out of medicine and now have to go search for a new doctor. like I said STAY AWAY. Please.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sandi C.Ramsey, NJ1110May 15, 2018
Ok - yes, he is extremely blunt, and to the point. He is not a hand holder. But, I must give him credit. He completely pulled me out of a deep depression in 1999. A boyfriend had broken up with me, and I just couldn't stop crying over it. This was a breakdown that had been building up in a while, due to a very stressful childhood. He put me on a depression medication, and I kept seeing him weekly. I gradually improved within a few months.

Found Dr. Rubin through my provider directory and I feel like I lucked out. It's always tricky to find good doctors with little or no endorsement from other patients, and limited information online. This is why I'm taking the time to put in a good word for Dr. Rubin.
His office is quiet and offers a good amount of privacy and confidentiality. The receptionist is great at answering insurance and billing-related questions, and sends Google Calendar reminders for future appointments. Dr. Rubin himself is straightforward, professional, and will follow through to assure you're on the right treatment plan. He is very intelligent, and has a good sense of humor. I sense that he is a highly experienced and well-seasoned psychiatrist, and trust his ability to assess my conditions through brief conversations.
He is not going to spend tons of time with you, but show me a psychiatrist that does. At least he's flexible with scheduling, and isn't a profit-driven jerk, like lots of people in the field. He will help you discover your medical needs, get you a good Rx, and out in no time. I'm pretty in touch with myself emotionally, so really this is all I need. Happy to find a doctor that I trust and plan to stick with!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rachel M.Brooklyn, NY0182May 14, 2016
Finding out the hard way that psychiatrists under insurance plans are garbage. While he did take the time to evaluate me (more than I can say for some other doctors) I only ended up going to 3 visits.
He is very overbooked and I didn't feel like he cared in the least. He offered me an addictive anti-anxiety (you know the kind) after I explicitly told him about how often I self medicated with alcohol and had been advised by my therapist that I may have an alcohol problem. No mention of getting sober before taking medication.
Typical distant pill pusher. I stopped with the medication after only a few weeks and have lost hope in finding a psychiatrist through insurance.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Adam A.New York, NY2020Jun 12, 2016
As I write this review, it has been more than 5 years since I was Dr. Rubin's patient. When I left him, I thought he'd soon retire and that dwelling on my experience was pointless. Seems I was wrong.
What finally motivates me to write this review is Rachel M.'s remark, "psychiatrists under insurance plans are garbage." I understand how Dr. Rubin could lead a patient to that conclusion, but fortunately, it's just not so across the board.
Since leaving Dr. Rubin, I've found numerous highly competent doctors (including a psychiatrist) who do accept insurance. I've focused on data that seems likely to correlate with professional competence, like the quality of a doctor's medical school, residency and overall patient feedback.
Consider: Dr. Rubin's medical degree is from the University of Basel (Switzerland), which isn't ranked in the top 100 med schools in any survey that I've found. Thus, it's unlikely that Dr. Rubin would survive any reasonable filter for competence. Many psychiatrists who accept insurance have stronger credentials.
Even so, it's frightening that such an incompetent and unethical doctor is free to practice. Basics like accuracy, honesty and doctor-patient confidentiality mean nothing to Dr. Rubin..
Why did it take me so long to escape? Sometimes I beat myself for having been so foolish. But Dr. Rubin's misdiagnosis and mistreatment also didn't sharpen my judgment.
One site that offers a lot of ways to filter the quality of medical schools is medical-schools (dot) startclass (dot) com. Other useful sites might be considered yelp competitors, so I won't name them, but they're easy to find by searching for rankings of medical schools and residency programs.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Richard S.Brooklyn, NY124Dec 23, 2015
excellent doctor. dr. Rubin does not play games but get straight to the point. he is as honest as honest could be. if you need somebody to hold your hand and tell you how everything is just going to be alright get a girlfriend or boyfriend. if you need a doctor who's going to help you with the psychiatric problem that you have then you should go see dr. Rubin

Scheduled me for 30 minutes for an initial visit, but spent 16 minutes with me (after having me wait 30 minutes to be seen). About 7 of those 16 minutes he spent on the computer, putting my basic info (like address and phone number) in his system --and struggling with the process. Didn't ask many questions. Showed no empathy. Little eye contact. Sent me on my way with a prescription for a "new" medication and a "See ya' in a month." I said there was something else I needed to talk about; he said, "Another time."
Not the worst, but definitely not acceptable. Or trustworthy. Very nice office and waiting room, though, with a semi-professional secretary. She told me regular appointments are 15 min. but he doesn't usually spend "all that time" with the person. It would seem he's in it for the money. I will not be returning.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Shara K.New York, NY05Jun 23, 2015
Extremely cold. Does not take the time to know you. Gives you prescriptions without getting your background. Extremely unprofessional comments when it came to obstacles I was battling.
