Las Carnitas is a small restaurant that serves TexMex and Salvadoran eats. The hubs and I came here for a later lunch, and we ordered: a cheese pupusa, steak chimichanga, and carnitas and carne asada tacos (both with the Mexican tortillas and the Salvadorean tortillas). I really liked the cheese pupusa, as it was prepared really well - the exterior was nice with the crispy edges, and the inside was filled generously with the cheese; no need for any sauce here! The steak chimichanga was forgettable; while they were able to get it deep-fried, the steak cubes were off in taste; I wasn't a fan of the beans inside. The side of rice was pretty tasty, though, and I would definitely order this again! The tacos were also overwhelming; while the carnitas is what this restaurant is supposedly known for, they were a bit too dried out. The tortillas were also not a good complement, as the Mexican tortillas seemed a little stale and super hard; the Salvadorean-style was a bit too thick with not enough filling. The house hot sauce was way too watered down and there was no other way of spicing them up.
Complimentary chips and salsa served.
Service was friendly, and this seems to be a hot spot to grab some drinks and shoot some pool. Located in the Aldi plaza, there's plenty of parking available.

The Place may not look like the best but their service definitely is and most importantly the food portions and taste are great !! New Favorite Location for a good mix of Fajitas freshly made !!

Read about this place in an article about Route 1 in a local paper. They raved about the soup & my wife is definitely a soup fan. We checked out last night with the Grandkids. The setting is cool, has a pool table area, T.V's with the game on, and a bar with plenty of seating. Our Waitress was okay, seemed to be somewhat disinterested or possible language barrier? I am like the commercial " Just Okay is not Okay", the soup was $4 more than the recent article(this month) maybe lunch price? We tried the Beef & also the Chicken. The beef was decent, somewhat bland. The chicken was a lot of skin, and also bland. Nothing to say we got to go back, so we probably won't- little disappointed as we was hoping to add a new restaurant to our list of near-by places to eat.

Amazing!! Don't overlook this restaurant. I was a little hesitant to eat here because I am not from the area and knew nothing about the place. Bottom line, the food and service did not disappoint!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Las carnitas is a good lunch spot. The menu is straight and to the point and has some Mexican and Salvadorian fan favorites. The food is tasty, but won't blow you away. We also had to ask for chips and salsa from our very uninterested waitress. The chips were cold, but the salsa was good. For lunch, I ordered the chicken combination (enchilada, taco, and taquito). The enchilada and taco were very tasty. After taking one bit of the taquito, I noticed all the meat had been pulled into my mouth with that one bite. It was a little over fried as well. My dining partner ordered four papusas with pork and cheese and liked them very much. They came out a little too browned for my personal liking, but they were tasty. In all, a decent quick lunch dining experience. But I doubt if I'd come back for dinner. Maybe lunch again though.

Tried to call ahead for a carryout order. The lady who answered the phone could barely speak English and had such a hard time understanding what we were ordering. Gave up and just placed the order once we arrived to the restaurant.
We ordered 2 chicken tacos, a beef burrito, carnitas fajitas and a carnitas plate. Food tasted subpar. Chicken was very dry, the burrito was 90% beans and lacked flavor, the fajitas were decent but had a lot of fat and the carnitas plate was disappointing with no flavor. The only item that was good was the rice. Unsure how this place has such good reviews.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 30, 2014
This Salvadorian hole-in-the-wall serves up some authentic dishes that allow you to enjoy some Central American deliciousness without the expense of purchasing an airline ticket. That's right, foodies, you would pretty much need to fly down to El Salvador to experience anything more authentic.
So what should you order when in Las Carnitas? Why Carnitas of course, for if there is one thing that they do well here is flavorful, roasted meat, a dish that is bathed in sauce which is seasoned to perfection. And to compliment this signature dish, you might want to consider a tic tac, a liqueur made from sugar cane and very popular down in El Salvador.
They take a lot of pride in their food here, and it shows in Las Carnita's service. They are always smiling and willing to help you with your selection. It should be noted that the many of the patron's appear to have some connection to Central America, which I see as a good thing, for it underscores the authenticity of this joint's food. Moreover, Las Carnita's clientele is also very friendly and will more than likely give you a knowing nod of approval, realizing that you're not the average diner but one willing to embrace different cultures and different foods. Seriously, the restaurant's atmosphere is an added bonus.
I would go with a five star rating, but Las Carnita's location can be a bit sketchy at times, particularly at night Although this isn't necessarily Las Carnita's fault, the location does have a few nefarious characters (not affiliated with the restaurant) loitering near the strip mall from time to time.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Vicky T.Hyattsville, MD09Apr 25, 2021
Was traveling out of state and based on the reviews I decided to try this place. It was right before noon and there were already loud and obnoxious drunk people in there. The waitress was nice, the food not so great and the bathroom was disgusting. If you are looking for a nice place to sit down with the family this is NOT the place.

This is a neighborhood cantina which serves the el Salvadorian market and all others lucky enough to venture in for some of the most authentic Salvadorian food in the area perhaps outside of the Country of origin.
If your not from El Salvador you might think the draw is the pool tables, Spanish music or cerveza and friendly environment, but don't be discouraged. You will be quickly greeted by one of the friendliest wait staff I have found and truly excellent food.
You can always find one or two of the owners walking around and making sure everyone is having a good time. They also have a tex mex menu for those not as familiar with more Central American dishes. But I would suggest seeking out one of the three owners for advise on your particular pallet.
I work in the area and I have brought over five dozen out of town guests and other colleagues to Las Carnitas for a year and a half. I've tried too much of the menu to single out any particular dish. I often go back to their Huevos Con Chorizo (egg and sausage) and the sauté beef strips with jalapeño salsa. If you have room, try an order of chicken wings.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0
