From the dawn of civilization, the indigenous people of the Middle East have created delectable meat and vegetable dishes using a unique style of cooking known as Saj. At first, food like lamb or beef was prepared on flat, round rocks that were heated by the sun and combined with fresh vegetables, rich spices, and flavorful marinades. But as time evolved, a metal dome heated from underneath was developed that came to be called Saj. Following an extensive culinary tour of the Mediterranean region, our chefs have mastered this Old World style of cooking and are presenting it to you for the very first time. Because the dome is heated at the optimal temperature of 500 degrees, our USDA prime meat, fresh fish and seafood, organic vegetables, and secret sauces are cooked quickly to seal in the flavors -- and without any of the harmful properties associated with cooking directly over a flame grill. We also have undertaken extensive research to develop the finest culinary dishes for your pleasure. Consider our grape leaves, which underwent 20 different recipes before we selected our final delectable offering. Or our falafel, which we spent countless hours developing, including more than 100 separate recipes. In fact, every dish on our menu is handmade -- even our ice cream. Along with our passion for sterling service and a rich, memorable décor that evokes Old World Lebanon, we hope you will agree with us that this will be your first of many visits to La Saj.

Came here for the booming reviews and have to say, they did not lie! Service, atmosphere, and food are all excellent! From the time we came in, we were given fresh bread with their signature garlic sauce (absolutely delicious) and our server was so on top of it, constantly replenishing our bread and sauce. For the main item, we got the La Saj Trio which comes with chicken and beef Kababs, kafta, hummus, rice, + 2 side items (we got the house salad and lentil soup). Very generous amount for a great price. Meat was tender and flavorful and everything was fresh. This place did not disappoint and highly highly recommend.
Note: would include a picture of our meal but was too good so ate it pretty quick!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bob L.New Baltimore, MI91458Apr 2, 2024
My lunch experience at La Saj was like a Dickens novel, welcome to "the best of times...the worst of times". FIVE STARS for the food. ONE STAR for the service. Upon entering there is a blunt signage on the front door indicating customers should be patient as the restaurant was short-staffed. No greater truth was ever told. You've been warned.
AMBIANCE: Tasteful Middle-Eastern decor, very beautiful and clean. No obnoxious darbuka music blaring either. Thank you!
FOOD: Five stars. Excellent quality, fresh and inspired. La Saj is a step above the other Middle-Eastern restaurants that saturate the Metro Detroit region. Super-fresh crispy salad greens with delicious homemade dressings, generous chicken cuts grilled and spiced to perfection, chicken schwarma sandwich wrapped tight with mounds of flavor served with uniquely cut half-moon spiral fries. The chicken mushroom saute was the stand out dish served in a decadent creamy sauce with mounds of flavor. Wow!
SERVICE: One star. Waitress was spacey and scattered, forgot to bring bread and garlic dip, forgot to take our orders timely, forgot silverware, forgot to refill water glasses, took awhile to serve the food. Claimed she relied on bus boys to complete certain tasks, however there were no bus boys during lunch hours. Like I said, spacey and scattered.
OVERALL: 3 stars total score. The food quality is definately worth the trip, however service quality is a factor needing much improvement. Roll the dice, maybe you'll get a good waitress, maybe not. Maybe I'll get carry out next time.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Nov 26, 20232 check-ins
I love middle eastern food and there's no shortage of places to eat in Metro Detroit. La Saj has at least one other location in Troy that I've eaten at, so I knew what to expect when walking in.
I reviewed the menu along with my friend and we started with the bread along with garlic dip. I could barely stop eating it to even look at the menu. Eventually I decided on the Falafel since they make it correctly here. Back story on Falafel for me: When I was 17 I spent 2 months in Israel and we ate A LOT of falafel along the way. It's kind of like Hamburger's to Americans. So, I like it made a certain way. If it's green on the inside, it's going to be good. If it's brown, I will not like it. Even in Metro Detroit with all the middle eastern restaurants we have, not all places make falafel the same! La Saj does!
They also have a falafel sandwich here, but I passed on it. I went with the appetizer since I was also getting their Lentil soup, which was very hearty I must say. I got 6 falafel but was only able to eat 3, so I took the other 3 home for later. My friend got a fabulous salad, soup and sandwich which she said was very good.
Overall our experience here was wonderful and our server was good. I only got irritated near the end because she was slow about getting us leftover containers. Plus, she forgot the lid for my dip for my falafel, and the containers she gave me were so small! I ended up taking up 3 small containers and eventually got the lid. Drinks here were refilled quickly, and even though it's not cheap to eat here, it's really good food.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Amy, thank you for the review and we are so glad that you enjoyed your meal with us! I apologized on behalf of the server who took care of you not being quick enough. Its very hard to find good help these days especially in this business, its just one of the struggles we face daily, the other of course is food cost as I am sure you are aware the food costs in general are unbelievable lately. We are doing the best we can! Thank you for supporting our business it means the world to us!

Yes probably The best Mediterranean I have had in the area. Second experience with full meal, we got 2 different platters and wow! The meat is so tender, very easy to eat. Even with left over after a day in the fridge it was still tasty. The garlic sauce is one best, but it's unlimited with unlimited bread. Other place charge you for the extra garlic sauce. The server was super nice, we were slow at deciding food and waiting for couple people to arrive but she was very patient. The inside vibes are great! Most of the food is halal with few exceptions.

We tried LaSaj again after a less than stellar experience months ago. Food was fresh, great flavor, and prepared quickly. So glad to have tried it again.

Hi Darlene, thank you for the review. I wanted to take the time to let you know that we recently closed and have done some updates to our restaurant and our menu. You are right since Covid things have changed drastically for our business and we have been challenged with many things. I hope that you will consider visiting again soon and see that are quality of food and portions are very good.
Thank you again!Sep 30, 2023Previous reviewIt's just no longer the quality or portions it used to be. I'm cognizant of the fact that the food industry has changed and inflation has impacted some businesses and their products. LaSaj has been a regular in our rotation of restaurants over the past decade. It is just no longer offering the quality of food that it used to offer. The prices are way higher and the food just doesn't taste that good anymore and the consumer is receiving less. The competition's food is now tasting better and their prices are a fraction of LaSaj's. It's unfortunate because it used to be a family favorite.

Delicious food for the most part- lots of reminding you that garlic sauce and bread are not complimentary. Ordered the hummus sampler and received a large traditional hummus with no explanation- frustrating. We got delivery and would not recommend that experience, but the food was worthy of a trip to eat-in.

I really like the food at la Saj, but there current online ordering system is not working properly. Twice I ordered a bowl of lentil soup and it took an hour to pick up the wrong soup. Luckily both times I looked at the invoice attached to the carry out bag and noticed that it said " bowl ck veg soup". I quickly pointed out the error to the hostess and both times they insisted that was what I ordered so I got out my phone and showed them my email order confirmation. I also suggested they correct that in the system but obviously that wasn't done because the exact same thing happened today and this is about three weeks after the first incident. I was treated like I was trying to get away with some crime!! Seriously, just apologize and correct my order. After all, it took you an hour from the time I ordered it until it was ready. Then they go get a replacement bowl in all of 5 minutes. I never got an ap

We ordered take out for the family - ordered an assortment of meats, appetizer platter, salads, soups, etc. had more than enough food leftover for lunch the next day. The hummus, baba Ghanoush, & garlic dip were amazing. Meats were also great - falafel had a little weird taste to it. Overall great food and would come back!

HI Jerome, Thank you for your reply and are so glad you enjoyed our food! We truly apologize about the TV, we had the Christmas network on and never knew that they played "R" movies! The movie was apparently Bad Santa which is 'R' not 'X' it was a very simple mistake as soon as the hostess saw this she did get the manager out who apologized out loud and changed the channel as quickly as she was made aware. We defiantly have never done such a thing and it will not happen again I can promise you that! Please accept our apology! Look forward to you visiting again soon. Happy Holidays!
Oct 17, 2021Previous reviewHave been going to Lasaj for many years, this is no longer a dine in restaurant. They had no Sandwich availability. I always get a couple Kabob
sandwiches, they had no bread available. I wanted to leave, but wife wanted to stay, will be a very long time before we return. Note: they had several carry-outs. Good Luck!!!
