Best cocktails in all of Mexico City! I said it and I mean it. The ingredients are fresh organic and amazing to say the least. I ordered two separate cocktails both of which were truly delicious.
Both cocktails had mezcal but both tasted completely different. Btw this is a mezcal year lace point blank period.
I had the Pepino cocktail which was a cucumber and ginger cocktail. It was so refreshing and the ginger was fresh and tasty. The leaf in the drink which may have been pine or mint also was fresh smelled great and added flavor to the cocktail.
The second cocktail I had was the habanero. This was a red and spicy drink. The rim was covered in a spicy Chile and salt mix which went really well with the drink.
What surprised me the most was the food here. Not a huge menu but what they do serve is made well and taste great. I had the talyuda with rib eye steak. It was the perfect late might food to go with my drinks.
The habanero salsa at this place is probably the best I have had in all of Mexico defectively addicting.
I would recommend this place for those that love good drinks. It gets packed after about 9/10 and it's small so maybe come earlier if you want to avoid waiting. - Jess S.Seattle, WA20 friends44 reviews29 photos
12/31/2019Great spot for mezcal and mezcal cocktails. Very small space and a bit hole in the wall. Perfect for a chill evening. Complimentary pumpkin seeds to snack on while you sip.
Mezcal is a little too strong for my on its own, but they have absolutely divine cocktails. I had their seasonal (I think) Santa something which was smoky and sweet with a piece of kiwi.
The wait can be quite long, I'd recommend coming close to opening time for a pre meal drink. They also do have a disclaimer on their menu that during busy times you may have to wait 20ish minutes for a drink!
I would definitely go back next time I'm in CDMX! - Ruben H.Chicago, IL4 friends37 reviews7 photos
12/1/2019This was the perfect place to bring our friend to take advantage of all the great mezcales Mexico has to offer. It's a small, dark, and intimate atmosphere. Perfect for slow drinking that beautiful liquid of love. ayyyy!!! The service when we went was a little slow, considering the place was small and crowded. The wait time for a table for 3 was around 30 mins. It wasn't bad for a group of 3 or less, anything more and you'll have to wait for a while. Luckily, you can drink your mezcal out front of the bar. The cocktails were really good too and they only had two kinds of beer on hand. Overall, this place was awesome and I'd even go alone to enjoy a shot or 10. Your bound to make friends and everyone is their for a good time.
- Monica C.Chicago, IL
12/20/2019Good spot - quiet and pretty dark. it is very small and rather understaffed, so expect a wait (to be seated, to order, to be served, to pay, etc). However, the food and drinks are super worth it. They have a large selection of mezcal and of mk used drinks as well and everything I tried was very good. Good spot for a date or like a quiet night out, but don't come in a big group because there truly isn't space - even in a small table you are kind of sitting on top of the table next to you.

12/17/2019A friend recommended La Clandestina to us before our CDMX trip, and it was a fun stop. It's a nice bar but it was so crowded on a Friday night and probably took us around 30-40 minutes to get our drink. It's also really expensive. It looks like a bar that could belong in LA or SF and has a cool, trendy vibe. If that's what you're looking for, it's definitely worth checking out. For me, it was too touristy and I didn't go to Mexico to feel like I was back in LA so I wouldn't personally recommend it if you're trying to really experience Mexico City.

12/27/2019Great little hidden boite of a cocktail bar where mixology takes center stage. I introduced myself to a gathering of three and my evening was underway. I had a rose colored, egg-white frothed cocktail with a smoking cassia shard to lighten the way. Posers and proposers of social causes added to the intimate ambiance. The bartendress was staged by the recess of a nook and impressed with ambidexterity every drink's construction.

1/27/2019Quaint, sexy, enticing. This spot does hold its own when it comes to cocktails and mezcal. They are not just creative combinations of different bitters for the sake of creating something unique, they are some of the tastiest drinks I've had in years.
There is extreme attention that people put into the craft and appreciation of Mezcal here, something that is nearly impossible to experience anywhere else in the world. It is in line with my other observations of Mexico City, where I constantly see a desire to take something traditional and ancient, put it under a microscope and focus on enhancing it, creating new things with it and upping the quality in ways that have not been sustainable in the past. In the case of La Clandestina, that focus element is mezcal itself and the results of this experimentation are truly magical. - Peter L.Phoenix, AZ2 friends10 reviews
12/10/2019The best cocktails in all of CDMX by far! The vibe, music and decor are amazing as well

11/27/2019This place is waste of time and money. Looks hip and attract expats. We were a group of 5. They took orders and the we waited 30 min to have the first drink of the table. 2nd one arrived in 40 minutes. Drink are also awful too. Then they told us that other drinks are not available anymore. This definitely does not worth it. You pay US prices for watered weird mezcal drinks

Awesome bar in Mexico City. It's tucked away in between several other bars and restaurants. The mezcal is fantastic and we also really enjoyed the guacamole with chicharron and crickets. We grabbed a table right out on the street and crushed many cocktails as we people watched. Definitely would come back here

7/19/2019Coolest bar ever with the best drinks and late night menu! We stumbled on this place while just walking down the street. The decor is super cool, it seemed like a cocktail bar you would see on TV! The only downside is it's really dark so reading the menu was very difficult. Then we had the most amazing server. He was so nice, gave us a ton of refs for dancing. Lastly, the food menu for late night was bomb! The sandwich was delicious and paired nicely with my super cute cocktail.

5/3/2018On our first night in Mexico City we came across this little bar on Yelp and decided to try it out for the mezcal!
We found a little table by the door and had the nicest waitress who spoke perfect English.
Much to my surprise, they had a few different vegetarian options on the menu! We ordered a few different items, tacos (for my boyfriend), street corn, and one other vegetarian item I cannot remember the name of! All of it was delicious and we enjoyed our late night dinner/snack.
The environment was very fun! I felt comfortable wearing just jeans and a casual shirt. At times, different guys were walking around playing drums trying to get tips. We didn't mind the free music/entertainment.
As far as the mezcal, this was my first time trying it and I really enjoyed it!
If I came back to the Condesa area I would for sure make a stop back here!

6/4/2018Thank you for your comments! You enjoyed tostadas (or chalupitas) of lentils ceviche and portobello, right? Good choice! We also have molotes (deep fried banana cakes with cheese), guacamole or Tlayudas of huitlacoche, nopales, etc! We hope to see you again soon!

5/23/2019Funky hipster ghetto crowded little place with good old disco playing and all sorts of funky mezcal. Had the 10 18 and 22 and loved the 18 the most. Smelled like a trash fire.
Wish this place was in dtla; it'd fit right in and be a hit. - Will X.Santa Monica, CA
5/27/2019La Clandestina is a trendy, dark tequila and food bar restaurant that has cool lit up decor, adventurous appetizers, and good food. We came on a Saturday night and place was busy and there were lines to get in unless you just wanted to chill at the bar. This is a great place to get cool cocktails or try a selection of mezcals. The bites here were tasty and if you're bold enough, the grasshoppers are an intriguing appetizer - salty and crunchy, its good drinking finger foods (though can get too salty after a while). Overall, a cool place to grab a drink or two for sure.

9/5/2019A small and intimate bar, you should feel comfortable sitting closely to whomever you visit this bar with... I would recommend going on a slower night. The staff is very friendly and make great recommendations for drink choice. The environment is very inviting. I had a cocktail with avocado in it and it was delicious. I was a little tipsy by the time we made it there, so I don't remember the cost of my drinks, but I had no regrets the next day.

10/16/2017After visiting Mexico City a few months ago, I kept on feeling guilty I didn't leave a review for La Clandestina. So, here I am: fulfilling my duty to ensure fellow Yelpers make their way to this sacred mezcal haven.
So what's so great?
- speakeasy-like feel; dark, intimate, mysterious
- their well-crafted mezcal cocktails - the BEST I've had in Mexico City
- a good selection of mezcal cocktails for every palette; refreshing, fruity, stirred, (I particularly LOVED the blackberry & guacamole one)
So... what's the catch?
- gotta admit their bathroom situation was too tight for me hah.. could use an expansion
- easy to miss cause the signage is discrete
Whether you want to give mezcal a shot or you're a die-hard fan, make sure to stop by! - Kenny C.Brooklyn, NY

Pretty great mescal bar with a great selection, outdoor seating, and a sister restaurant next door. Place gets pretty popular on the weekends, so if you want a seat, get there early. If not, there's a ton of other restaurants and bars nearby.

Totally one of my favorite places in Mexico City now. Stopped here at the end of a long day of doing (and drinking) stuff, so I only got a chance to try a couple things, but what I did try was excellent, and it's just such a *cool* place. It is also tiny. When I arrived, around 9 PM on a Saturday, they said they were totally full and it'd be about a 15 minute wait - but then when they noticed there were only two of us, they changed their mind and let us sit right in the entrance, which was actually kind of a great place to sit, because you got a full view of one of the coolest things about the place, the fact that their mezcal isn't commercially bottled, it arrives in numbered vats, which are in full view up over the bar, and basically means you could say they have 20-something mezcals "on tap".) I was thinking the pictures posted at the front of the list of pictures on yelp were of decorative bottles, but nope - those bottles all have mezcal in them, and are hanging in the front. :)
Once I'd figured out the menu (a page of cocktails, then the rest is a numbered list of the mezcals they have, just labeled by who made it), I started with a cocktail, the Hoja Santa, for about 8 bucks US. It arrived pretty much immediately after ordering, and was totally delicious. Tasted like a mezcal margarita, but a really excellently-prepared one that was full of delicious, definitely high quality mezcal, and a lot of basil flavor, and garnished with a nice bit of fresh basil on top. I'd totally get that again if I were back in the area (though I'd get others, first, because duh, I would've liked to try everything. Sadly, I was pacing myself. Next time! If it hasn't gotten too popular by then.)
At this point, I was ready to try some mezcal. I wasn't quite how it worked, so I started asking, and then they went and got the apparently one guy who speaks a good amount of English as opposed to "a little bit", which was very much appreciated - hopefully that guy is always there ;). So how it works is, you describe what you're looking for, then they tell you which numbers they think you'll like. How it *also* works, or at least how it worked for us, is if you indicate you're here because you want to find a mezcal you want to bring home, which was absolutely true, and I wasn't expecting this, but it was very much appreciated... I said that and they gave me a few tastes (much smaller than a whole pour of each, but that was perfect, since my goal was "taste", not "get drunk off mezcal".)
So I got to try 3 of their smokiest mezcals (one wasn't quite smoky enough for me, one had a weird almost cheesy side-flavor, but one was just completely gorgeous.) So I got a proper pour of that one to savor right then, for 80 pesos, and it was just as fantastic as I remembered, so I brought a bottle home - 500ml for 780 pesos (a little pricey, but worth it - it was a really highly quality mezcal, and one you can't get anywhere else except here or straight from the source!). They poured it into an unlabeled 500ml jar, then labeled it on the spot. If I lived in Mexico City, this would be my *place* (well, one of them).
Oh, I also got to try a free sip (*a* sip, obviously, but still super cool of them) of one of their splurgier things - a mezcal that had then been aged like an aged rum. It really did taste exactly like that - like good mezcal that has then been treated like good aged rum. It was delicious, but a bit too splurgey. If I were rich, though, I would totally have bought a bottle (heck, if I were rich, I would've just gone down the list, tried everything, then probably ended up with half a dozen bottles. ;))
And yes, the name is accurate - we walked right by, twice, before figuring out where it was (it doesn't help that it's right next door to another bar, that *does* have a name out in front.) - Keerti P.Austin, TX6 friends30 reviews55 photos
3/13/2018One of the highlights of Mexico City! Mezcalarias are such a fun idea, and La Clandestina does it right. The place is super cute, dark, and has a beautifully lit wall full of mezcal barrels. It is "unplotable" on the map, so that also adds to the fun- makes it feel like a prohibition type speakeasy.
The Mezcal is served surrounded by orange slices, with a hint of chili powder. Really adds to the experience, and a good palate cleanser between types of mezcal. - Christina L.San Francisco, CA442 friends810 reviews2441 photos

la clandestina has quite the following on instagram, yelp, eater, infatuation, etc. etc., and the clientele shows. everyone table on monday evening (i.e., president's day) was from the US, and presumably they saw the rave reviews posted here. if you are looking for something with a bit more local flair in order to experience what residents of CDMX like, i recommend you go somewhere else. we ordered two cocktails in the dimly lit bar, and while they were good, they were pretty forgettable. i would not recommend this place to my friends.
