This review is based on lunch. And such a delightful lunch it was. Honestly, the food was delicious. The salsa was to our liking, smooth yet bold in flavor.
The food itself was very tasty. It wasn't greasy or simply covered in chili powder in lieu of actual proper spice combinations. The menu options were plentiful and unique. There was a lot more to offer than simple burritos and fajitas, which I loved. The lunch menu especially seemed to have many more options than I was expecting.
I've seen reports on here of slow service. That wasn't the case for us. However, it wasn't all that crowded either as we were doing a very late lunch and only about five to tables were occupied. If that changes in the future I will change my opinion and review but for now.
I think the little bit that really solidified the five for me was the main manager running out the door after me when I forgot my glasses. Overall I would say it is a wonderful place and I plan to go back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 3, 20242 check-ins

Yall know I love a good routine and tradition and La Botana is one of our weekly traditions. @marybethhaglund introduced us to this gem and I'm forever grateful for the many meals we've shared here.
La Botana opened its doors in 2004. July and Rigo Herrera Velasqez created La Botana as a way to share a part of their culture through food.
Their menu takes inspiration from different states of Mexico: Nuevo Leon, Jalisco and San Luis Potosi. Heritage and pride is at the core of everything they create.
Catch us here twice a week enjoying their robust mole and tangy huitlacoche tacos.Helpful 7Thanks 1Love this 6Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2024
This will always be one of my favorite Mexican places in the area, mostly because of the incredible vegetarian menu!
We stopped by late Saturday afternoon and got seated right away: greeted with warm chips and salsa. Salsa is not too spicy but very fresh tasting, and service is always fantastic.
We started with the vegetarian queso fundido: wow! Soy chorizo to my heart. At first we were worried the queso was thin, but as soon as we mixed that baby, OH MY GOODness. Salty, spicy, cheesy, and a perfect compliment to the chips and salsa.
We were so excited to try the newer vegetarian options and they didn't disappoint: I got the Brussels chimichanga and hubs got the bok choy chimichanga. What's wild: they were both so different flavor profiles! Mine was a spicy mix of pintos, veggies, perfect potatoes and tomatoes, topped with a white cheese and what looked like a tomato/chili crisp. INCREDIBLE: spicy savory and just full of homey love. The bok choy one had that incredible soy chorizo again: again full of veggies but a more chorizo profile. 10/10 both.
Always a chill and kind atmosphere: never feel rushed always feel welcomed.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - 2424581628Dec 3, 2023
This corner strip mall location is a pleasant surprise!! The menu selections all sounded delicious.
It was hard to choose something.
The service and ambiance were both excellent.
The food was so delicious. Fresh ingredients, authentic flavors.
Breakfast and lunch items.
I cannot wait to go back to have lunch again.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - 996156Aug 1, 2023
Tried out La Botana tonight and was pleasantly surprised at the diversity of their menu. This is not your standard run of the mill Mexican restaurant. They have a TON of unique options to choose from including an extensive vegetarian selection as well as vegan options.
I ended up getting the Mucho Queso Combo, the sauce was very flavorful and had a nice heat to it. My only complaint would be that my poblano did not have the core removed so it was a little bit on the seedy side. Overall it was a tasty dish and you can tell that it was made fresh.
One uncommon part of their menu that I wanted to highlight was their early bird menu. They have a lot of lower priced options if you come a bit earlier for dinner which I think is great!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 19, 2023Updated review
I decide to stop in this small restaurant for lunch. It has been several years since I tried the food here. I was quickly seated, and a menu and salsa & chips follow soon after that. The place is small, and there is constricted feel here.
I settled on the Carnitas Verde and a Modelo Especial to drink. The carnitas were in chunks and tender, but lacked the traditional outside crust. The verde sauce was thin and rather bland.
The beans were whole and under-seasoned, salt and a bit of hot sauce were needed. The rice was ok. The house made hot sauce was really good, plenty hot. The Avocado slices were fresh and flavorful.
This is a noisy place even when few tables are occupied, with much of the noise coming from the kitchen area in the form of much shouting and banging, not especially relaxing. A rather ordinary Tex-Mex meal, doubt I'll find my back here.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jan 8, 2015Previous reviewThis is not a particularly easy restaurant to review because you come away asking: How do I feel about that dining experience? And you simply don't have a completely satisfactory answer. There is much good, much that is interesting, and yet service can be an issue, and often is, it seems. The service is obviously not always good, nor is it always bad - you just never know which way it will be on your next visit.
The food is consistently pretty good. The lunch special of Enchiladas Verde ($6.99) comes with rice, guacamole salad, and a drink. The chicken is tender and flavorful - none of the dry, blandness often found in this type of dish. The Verde Sauce is as fresh and sharp tasting as any we've encountered in any area restaurant. I make this sauce probably 5 or 6 times a year, and the sharpness of the tomatillos is critical to the taste - they do it right here. The rice was excellent - no gumminess, great flavor. Definitely a reorder item.
The mixed Molcajete ($16.99) served here is interesting. It contains a large amount of a spicy, red sauce (Salsa Roja style), and this large amount of liquid (it fills almost the entire vessel) is more like a form of stew, than anything else. The only items draped over the top into the molcajete were the strips of cactus, everything else was submerged in the liquid, or piled on top of the liquid. This is is a very nice dish, just different from those that are drier, with the strips of meat and other items continuing to cook and sizzle along the top and sides of the molcajete.
The mixed version contains carne asada, shrimp, chicken, chorizo, sliced mushrooms, onions, cilantro, sliced cactus, chile peppers, cheese, and the thin, red, very spicy sauce. The molcajete itself is very hot, and this dish takes time to eat - it needs to cool off quite a bit for comfortable eating. The dish is served with pinto bean and tortillas. And another reorder item. The pricing here is generally good - the mixed Molcajete at El Camino Real in Greensboro is $21.99.
The service was inconsistent, slow, and really unfocused, and at a time when the customer pressure was very, very light - there were 2 small tables when we arrived, climbing to 5 by the time we left. Diners were waited on & served out of order. Drinks and chips were left empty for a considerable period of time, not just at our table, but others as well.
I had to ask for silverware and napkins, and though I ask, I never received the tortillas for the Molcajete. The time out of the kitchen was on the slow side - over 25 minutes for our entrees. We really like the food here - the Verde Sauce, the mixed Molcajete, the rice, and even the Salsa was excellent, with a nicely building heat level - but probably will not visit as often as we otherwise would, were the service consistently improved.
There have been enough pointed comments about the poor service in the past, in reviews at a number of different sites, and it remains a problem - doubt it will change at this late date. - J S.Winston-Salem, NC48Apr 20, 2024
The tacos here are amazing. I usually get the diablos and they are delicious. This is the best Mexican restaurant in town if you ask me. It's a little small so it can be hard to find seating inside on a busy night but it's worth the wait. They also have a lovely outdoor seating area. My one gripe with them is their hours are a little wonky.

I've heard so many good things about LaBotana so I figured it was time to finally give it a shot!
After getting in and reviewing the menu, I was pleasantly surprised to find daily early bird specials that run until 6:30. I got there just in time and enjoyed one of the specials of the day, the chicken enchiladas verdes with rice. Everything was cooked to order and came out fresh and the wait was not long considering.
The restaurant itself was a nice - I really liked that they have an outdoor patio for seating.
I will definitely be returning to try more of their menu.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 2054533126Aug 12, 2023
Stopped in last Wednesday for lunch with some friends. It had been forever since I'd been in so I was excited. It felt like they had done up the inside and they had some delicious sounding specials. I ended up going for the chicken enchiladas and they were delicious. Can't wait to go back to try more.

Not a typical Mexican joint. The salsa has cumin which gives it a really good flavor. Good place to eat but the portions seem a bit small in comparison to other Mexican places.

One of my absolute favorite places in all of Winston. If you want a similar stuff to most other places in town, you'll find it. You'll also find the best vegetarian menu featuring squash blossom Quesadillas, pineapple tacos with grilled cheese on top. The Mole is excellent- you can taste the fruitiness of the chiles with just a little heat, absolutely worth cleaning the plate.
They always have great drink specials and the street tacos are perfect if you don't feel like branching out.
Genuinely no idea why you would get Mexican food anywhere else, ALWAYS love it here.
They update their Instagram with specials and any closures given that it is a small restaurant.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
