2/19/24 UPDATE: Because I disagreed w/how the tech wrote in his chart and she argued "that was what I said" (yeah, minus 2 or 3 other important things) they REMOVED ME from their roster of patients like I'm a bad client? What? Refused to see my 21 yo today when most vets are closed due to Pres. Day. He is sick. SHAME on them. Tell me HOW I can know the history of an injury on a STRAY feral kitten I just adopted? Humane Society spays w/NO exams on ALL animals. THERE WERE NO OTHER RECORDS. NOT charting ALL 'the story' was important! It cost me non coverage as it reads like I'm pulling a fast one on insurance and they refused to do it right! WRITE THE WHOLE STORY. They don't DO much here anyway but refer out. Sad as my kitty loved Dr. I.
1. FIVE/5 stars: This GOOD review is ONLY for Dr. Iwashita; the other female vet butchered my old cats abscess and I'll never return to her. She left it open and bleeding and made a huge incision w/no flush instead of a small puncture and flush out. I'm a retired surgeon and wanted to know how to treat these and trusted her--no, never again. Contrary to her, Dr. Iwashita was EXCELLENT. He has a way with animals and you can tell he loves them and they respond with TRUST. Anyway, of three vets I've seen with my now 20 yo cat, only Dr. I actually palpated his belly and found the mass I have felt for 2 years. I'll not go ANYWHERE or to anyone else! But, he doesn't do ortho, dental or anything major or any surgery...so...he is only there for well checks, vacs, and minor stuff:( Dr. Iwashita? GOLD.
2. ZERO 0 stars: Record keeping sucks there. I have a new adopted kitten and he started dragging one leg before Christmas. I saw Dr. I 29 Dec. He again did a great exam BUT the assist WROTE in the chart that I "didn't want to say when it started because of insurance." WTF? why WRITE that? It was half the story--I didn't know when it started because I'd just adopted him! I didn't notice the leg stuff til right before Christmas when he started dragging it. He runs 100mph and it never slowed him down. So, insurance says, 'it started before you were covered' and my 138.00 bill was not applied to the deductible of $250? THANK YOU ASSISTANT FOR ONLY WRITING HALF THE TRUTH! You cost me 138.00. She actually argued when I Cb about this? I got insurance because he was a rescue and had a VERY rough time before I got him; now, because of how only half the 'story' was written in the chart, I get NO coverage. Thank you!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Feb 19, 2024Previous review2/19/24 UPDATE: Because I disagreed w/how the tech wrote in his chart and she argued and argued "that was what I said" (yeah, minus 2 or 3 other important things and she interrupted me continually, NOT listening) they REMOVED ME from their roster of patients (never informed)and refused to see my 21 yo today when most vets are closed due to Pres. Day. He is sick. SHAME on them. I'm sure Dr. Iwashita was not told the WHOLE story. If you write in a med chart--for a MD as well- you cannot put half the story! Tell me HOW I can know the history of an injury on a STRAY feral kitten I just adopted? I told her no one at the adoption place noted any injuries (all I had was the spay neuter form); I noticed the leg dragging/limp off and on right before Christmas (have since found out Humane Society spays w/NO exams on ALL animals). NOT charting this part of 'the story' can cost the patient/kitty non coverage as it reads like I'm pulling a fast one! WRITE THE WHOLE STORY.

Thank you!Jun 30, 2023Previous reviewI've been to VCA and another vet and had horrible experiences. Feather and Fur wanted $25 more because I called as a courtesy to tell them I'd be 5 minutes, maybe 10 max late! They lost me as a client. So I researched some more. Called and got an appointment with Dr. Iwashita at Koolau Animal Hospital. He was genuinely loving and caring and his animal love is genuine--so my 19 yo cat knew that too and totally relaxed in his experienced hands. I'm on a VERY strict budget so he researched the best labs to order at the best prices so I could afford to get my fur baby checked out as we wanted. He took his time with his exam as well as researching and I'm grateful. They forgot my senior discount, but the time he spent researching to help me financially was well worth it. He is a thorough vet who loves animals. Best of the best. He only works certain days so I can't rate the others--I had a bad experience there with another vet years ago but don't know if she is even there anymore.

Although I have not been here in office I am giving their kind receptionist staff five stars. Our normal vet was booked solid for a few days so I tried to call here to see if I could get an appointment for my daughter's cat. The receptionist not only got me a closer appointment but also was very compassionate with our situation. She gave me a few things to try out first, then said if it worked to just call them back to cancel the appointment. We did end up canceling the appointment and even the second receptionist that answered was just as sweet and caring as the first one, looking at our file and asking how everything was going, etc.
Staff here is so awesome!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 1 - Katie B.Los Angeles, CA084Mar 21, 2024
Incredible vet and vet techs. I took my cat here several times during the end of her life, and they treated us with such care and respect. I couldn't recommend them more.

Just moved on island, to find my pupcake Zippy having a hard time adjusting. He'd have serious separation anxiety when I'd step out the door to check the mailbox. I tried giving him treats before I step out, new toys, over the counter medication to no avail, so thought maybe prescribed meds might help him adjust.
Took to Yelp to find the nearest veterinarian. Koolau was within walking distance. However, I ended up driving in. With covid precautions in place, pet parents stay parked in the lot while fur kids are taken in.
Transition of care was seamless. They called our previous vet's office for Zippy's medical records. Staff is caring and friendly, all you could hope for in veterinary care.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ericah M.Kaneohe, HI065Oct 4, 2023
I had a fantastic experience here. The care and attention they provided to my two cats were exceptional. The staff were not only professional but also showed genuine compassion. My cats received top-notch treatment, and the facility was clean and well-maintained. I can't thank them enough for their excellent service and dedication to the well-being of animals. Five stars all the way!

Ever since we got our dog, we have taken her to see Dr. Iwashita at Koolau Animal Hospital. It's always easy to make an appointment with the receptionist and there have been times when we've needed and been able to get same day appointments due to emergency issues that came up. He is knowledgeable and has great bedside manner. His staff is warm and friendly.
My dog is always excited to go see Dr. Iwashita and gives him a big kiss each time. He is great following up whenever we go in for non-routine check up appointments, like the time our dog injured her back and required follow up therapy.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - N P.Aiea, HI05Dec 16, 2023
Koolau Animal Hospital personnel were great with our chihuahua who distastes getting his nails trimmed. They were gentle and firm to get the job done, even when he was clearly.....not happy.

Took my dog in for an ear infection. All the vet did was tell me what i already knew and prescribed ear drops. Oh, & took culture samples. One would expect the vet to treat the ear as well, by cleaning the infected ear as well. Couldn't believe it when i went to give my dog his ear medication. It was just as dirty as when I took my dog in earlier. Fast forward two weeks later, Just before my dog's follow up. I inquired about the vet not treating the ear infection during the initial visit. The response i received was that having the ears cleaned was not part of animal checkup or follow up. If that is the case? I said i would find a more accommodating vet.

This review is long over due. Our dog has a very bad ear infection and his original vet was not available for weeks. I called many other locations with no luck for an appointment. Koolau got us in within a day and the follow up and level of care was wonderful! It's a bit out of our way but well worth it.

Dr. Asato is always available and the staff are wonderful. They take great care of my pets. Highly recommended. When I call, they always answer their phone in person and they remember me.
