No frills good food.
Only 2 spots to sit at, so mostly to go, but I was able to sit and chat with another beef enthusiast.
Pit beef sandwich was delicious & medium gravy fries was out of this world. More than I could eat!

Kirkwood Pitbeef has both positive and not so positives. If I could give it a 3.5, I would. Pretty good and really affordable.
Venue:
When you walk in, it's a very small lobby with a window. There are only 2 chairs and a table by the window, but those were being sat in by people awaiting their to go orders.
Service:
It was slow but not because of the worker behind the counter, it was because he was by himself. He had to take the orders, prepare the orders, and ring people up. Somewhere in between he had to answer the phone for more orders. I postulated, someone couldn't make it to work that day and he was doing the best he could.
Food:
The pitbeef was good. I would go so far as to say it was on or with Pioneer Pitbeef, which is a staple of mine! The portions were great. I'm not sure if he was generous because we were standing around waiting for so long or if they are always like that. I saw a guy in front of me get a barbecue sandwich and he got the BBQ put into like a styrofoam cup (bordering on a tub) and the bun separate. There were 2.5 heaping scoops of BBQ put in that tub and it looked good. He was a local Infiniti car dealer mechanic so I'm guessing he is a regular. Actually about 5 were there getting food. My tiger sauce on the side was as big as a full Dixie Cup. It was really good on my pit beef sandwich.
The sides were so so. I got the fries and greens. The collard greens tasted pretty bland. No salt, no pepper, no nothing. The fries were limp and lifeless. There are A LOT of different sides to chose from. Next time, I will try something else.
Pro Tip:
Next door is Sorrentos. They are the same owners, so you can take your food next door, sit down, and eat it.

The driest ribs I've ever had. These look like they came back from a trip to the Sahara.
The kid they have in the back pretending to be a cook needs to be assigned to something else.
Ribs need care and experience. This was a huge disappointment.

Kirkwood is alright! Have I had better barbecue? Yes, absolutely. Have I ever had this much decent barbecue for such a good price? No way.
Look, it's fast food; there were just two workers in there and the inside has a sad little table for the allusion to a potential diner who might consider eating in...maybe. A dingy corner table has a variety of squirt bottles of vinegar and barbecue sauce. This contrasts with the swanky lit up LCD screen with the menu on it.
The pit beef sandwich was HUGE. So much meat, you're definitely going to make a mess eating this. I got horseradish, barbecue, and coleslaw on the sandwich. Flavor-wise it's okay. It wasn't bad, but I have definitely had some better sauces with a smokier beef; at least it was nice and tender.
Fries were a mixed bag - some were perfect, others a little too crispy from sitting under a hot lamp too long. The baked beans were basic - good, sweet. The mac and cheese was overcooked, so it was verging on mushy. Bummer.
I know there are better barbecue places in the area which I'll probably make my preferred stops but if I'm in a rush and in the area, I know I can get a solid meal (with plenty for leftovers) here. - Andrew M.Alexandria, VA4221326Oct 15, 2017
Awesome. Great toasted buns and quality meat. Got rare pit beef with raw onions and the special sauce. Got the same but with horseradish instead of whatever sweet mayonnaisey sauce that was. Both were mediums. A normal human would only want to eat 1 or maybe a large. But I'm l8ke a camel..
Anyhoo, right off 695. Next time instead of sitting in traffic pull off for an excellent, lean, $6 lunch. - Kati M.Ashburn, VA06126Nov 30, 2019
The bbq is really good, although apparently the pork is better than the pit beef. I got the coleslaw which was pretty good, and the cheese fries which were ok (also, the cheese is that movie theatre nacho sauce stuff, not melted cheese.) My boyfriend got the sauerkraut, which he said was ok as well. The service was perfectly fine, and the price was very reasonable, considering how much food we got. I wouldn't say this is the best bbq I've ever had, but it's good and a good deal.

We've been driving by this place from shopping/going to the gym nearby and finally tried them today...For the record, I initially did not want anything there. I wanted Five Guys esp after a workout. But the hubs loves pit beef and so I settled for the med corn beef sandwich and med cheese fries and a cherry coke. We didnt order any sides but from the other reviews, the sides didnt seem worth it anyway.
The guy who took my order took care with me to ask what I wanted on it and offered some suggestions. I was impressed that they cut the meat in front of you. We waited around 10 minutes as there was an order ahead of us. They were playing hits of early 1980's (...love lift us to where we belong...where the eagles fly...on a mountain high...) and given the ambience of the place and what we ordered, it really took me back to my early childhood LOL. The place has a small sit down and no bathroom and is basically a takeout place. We got our food and ate it in the car. OMG...the corn beef sandwich and cheese fries lived up to the whole 80's ambience and completed the experience. I wouldn't do this every week but I definitely wouldnt mind coming back again. - A.j. Man I thought this spot was promising because it's hard to mess up Pitt beef, turkey, ham etc. I usually go to the pit beef spot off rolling road on the hill but they were closed so I came here. Man the portion sizes are hood but none of that matters if the food does not taste well. In fact that's more upsetting when you have a bunch of food that sucks.
They have a combo that includes a large sandwich or medium sandwich either 8.99 or 7.99 that comes with two sides. The sandwiches are packed with the sides and that causes an issues unless ur getting fries. The sandwich bread got soggy and basically inedible because the juice from the greens destroyed the bun. The greens were so bad and so was the potato salad and the Mac and cheese looked like a box of Kraft. I was very disappointed and will not be back. The carryout is small and empty but you do have a visual of the workers making your food and they give you samples of all the meats they cut

Stopped here after reading the reviews for pit beef bbq. They did not disappoint and the portions were huge. Prices were great considering how much food you get. I will be back everytime I'm in the area.

Got the large platter (8.99 and it comes with two sides). A great deal because you get so Much food. I chose the pit beef and added onions (0.50) and ordered a side of chili cheese fries and Mac and cheese. The chili cheese fries has a great balance of salt and a sweet taste (sweet subtle taste). The chili has some sort of ground meat and is the best chili cheese fries I've ever had. The Mac and cheese was alright (the cheese was too runny for my taste).
The pit beef was amazing! I didn't know how I wanted the beef cooked, so the employee recommended medium. He brought out a slice of pit beef for me to try (excellent customer service!) the pit beef on our sandwich was super moist and delicious. Their Anjou sauce mixed with barbecue sauce was a perfect balance on the bun. Will definitely be back!
