I wish I could express the same sentiments as others. I walked into the residency four hours ago, met by a lazy man a the front desk who was too busy scanning Facebook to greet me. Granted it was late, but still. I called ahead to arrange my visit.

I asked him the time and it literally took him too long to answer ------so I reminded him I was present. I greeted my favorite resident whom I've known since childhood. Her daughter, my half-sister lives in SF. We just lost my mother ----so suffice it to say----she was freaking out. I live close by Kindred and walked over after calling in my visit.

My mother was lucky and lived at the Jewish Home in SF. They allowed overnight visits and understood that my time with mom was well spent and fucking precious.

I did have to fight a bit with certain nurses but the overall understanding is that -----HEY ASSHOLE, she's not just a patient, she's my mom, friend, etc. DON'T YOU DARE RUSH MY VISIT...HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW if this is ---my LAST.

That is what I don't understand about these fucking end of life spaces.

      Are you people even human?

I literally had to tell the attendant to basically fuck off.

No one should have to be under an 8am to 8pm visitation rule when it comes to family.

Do NOT send your loved ones here.

      They don't care.

They don't consider overnights a necessity as I was lucky to receive at the SF Jewish Home on Silver and Mission.

I also would not accept anything less.

Try and tell me I can't see my 76 year-old mother. Bitch Puhleeze!!!

This nursing and rehab system is bullshit. And I speak as a former compassionate caregiver of adults with disabilities in Oregon.

Fuck the system, hire a caregiver who actually cares to see your loved one live. These workers are not encouraged to engage due to low wages and a lack of incentive.

I made even less in Ashland, Oregon.

You do not enter this field to pay the mortgage, you do it because you care. I am thankful my mother is resting and at peace but I am adamant about a severe change to this system.

Hire young, eager people who want this work; cease hiring anyone over 40!

Period. My mother before death agreed. She hated being handled by folks over 40 with an attitude that they were too old to deal. Seriously, GO FUCK YOURSELF AND TAKE TOKENS AT BART.

The old desire the young perspective and warmth.

I HATE NURSING HOMES and this one pisses me off more than most. The SF Jewish Home was tolerable but even on my mother's final days, I was sitting in a goddamned hallway sorting her things because they didn't have an end of life package that included a room to do so.

Maybe a letter of her last days....something. There is no fucking way I will end my life in the care of people who don't give a damn.

My experience in my room here during day shift consisted of trying to sleep through loud conversations by nursing staff, regarding important medical matters like sports. Four hours after I was placed in my room, they offered me a room with a single bed "where Dr. Satterwhite's patients go." Can't have us trannies making any possible cis roommates uncomfortable, after all. One of my doctors' orders was for light walking during each shift. Getting ready to go on one, the meal lady who will only open the door if you scream for her to do so was sure surprised to see me up and about. She was also surprised to notice that my catheter had a liter and a half of piss in it. This escaped the notice of my swing shift nurse, Tammy C., but my hemline sure didn't! She was clearly distraught that someone in a hospital recovery area might see a pair of underwear.
During my walk, I passed the northwes nurses' station, where I had a transphobic conversation with Angela Louise, who asked me what my name was out of the blue so she could expound on what a pretty name it was. I said "Thanks, Angela's a pretty name too," and her quick reply was "Well that was MYYYY birth name." "So was mine," I said.
All in all, pretty standard trans healthcare; meaning, the bare minimum of service with constant microaggressions to remind us of our place in society.
Now I must put my thoughts as a transgender patient aside and address the criminally negligent basic care that was provided by this facility. A facility where the nurse call button is never answered. A facility where the staff applies bandages to your wounds in multiple layers so as to not have to change them throughout the night. A facility where you better be able to drain your own Foley catheter, cause it ain't happening otherwise unless you happen to remember it's full when one of the Heald College dropouts working there wanders in to mumble your vitals to themselves. A place where patients holler helplessly from their rooms for medical assistance. The staff would be better suited to a season of MTV's The Real World than medical staff, as hallway gossip reigns supreme as the number one priority amongst every one of them.
Upon leaving this facility, I looked back on the experience as an unfairly convicted criminal must look back at the prison where their injustice was carried out.

This place is a super disappointing dump. I was scheduled to be admitted for a recovery for myself, when I walked in no-one knew that I was scheduled to be there. Only one person out of the entire staff knew everyone else was oblivious. I was walked to my room by a person with an attitude. I sat there for about 30 minutes before anyone acknowledge me. Finally a nurse came over to take my vitals. I was asked if I had ate dinner and if I under any particular diet. I let them know that I required a low carb dietary meal because I'm diabetic. The meal arrived and wasn't a diabetic meal the dishes were dirty the place was big disgusting the floors with dirty the walls with dirty the border of the doors have rust I felt like I was going to get gangrene there. So needless to say basically I called an over gather my belongings and walk the hell out!!! My heart goes out to the fatally ill and have to be in that poor environment and nobody should have live like that. So I called and an UBER and got the hell out of there ASAP before I could get a worse infection.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know and observe the staff here quite well, having been by on a weekly basis in the last year. Words that come to mind when I think of their care team and administration alike are: adept, professional, proactive, passionate, honest, consistent, personable, just to name a few. They are thoroughly invested in accomodating the needs and goals of their patients and families with expertise and grace. As someone who is very familiar with skilled nursing/rehab care, I say with the utmost confidence that if you are looking for quality care for yourself or your loved ones, look no further than Kindred Nursing and Rehabiliation - Medical Hill.
