Thank's to my Uncle Joe for hooking me up with these delicious melt in your mouth pastry when I was a little kid...The Original location used to be on School Street. Nothing has changed at their new location. They still serve up the best pastry that melts in your mouth.
My beautiful daughter ordered a Ube Pastry and my wife ordered the Coconut Pastry, my sister ordered the Poi Donuts and I ordered the Best Cinnamon Roll that I ever had eaten...It just melts in your mouth. Everyone enjoyed their sweet pastries. - Jo-Anne S.Kaneohe, HI
2/25/2020Go early. For the best selection. This place probably has one of the most cheapest if not most reasonable prices of pastry you will find. Located in The Dillingham City Square, you will not find a bakery opening up at 200am!
I think their Banana bread loaf is good, a lot of people but the poi donuts, I say they are known for the glaze donuts. Something about the glaze donuts that stays glazed for most of the day and also tastes great too! But.... did you know how much oil there is in that donut? it's pretty darn nasty!!!
So, today I went to the bakery. There was a sign saying that they do not ACCEPT EBT AT THIS TIME. I'm not sure about DEBIT OR CREDIT CARDS. HOWEVER. IF YOU
USE A DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PAY A SMALL FEE LIKE (3.5%) additional to your purchase. THERE IS NO SIGN STATING THIS. Best to pay cash, if only I had cash with me
Besides this, I think there service sometimes is not all there too. - Vincent L.Oakland, CA

The opening hours on this Yelp listing are no joke. They really do open at 2am on weekdays and 3am on weekends.
"Regular" items that you might expect to find at a bakery, like old-fashioned glazed donuts, fritters, cream puffs, and rolls, are absolutely solid and are really cheap, at about $1.15 each.
But it's their huge selection of equally cheap local specialties that sets them apart from any run-of-the-mill bakery on the mainland. The poi glazed donuts ($1.15) are subtly savory treats. For something that just oozes goodness, try the haupia malasada ($1.15) or the poi haupia ($1.25), which are filled with coconut cream.
This is a large space in the middle of a strip mall, and even if there's a line, it moves fast. A fantastic bakery for your everyday needs. - Ami S.San Lorenzo, CA

So many pastry options right off the side of the highway. I remember driving past here and made the driver turn around to come back here just so I could see what they had. I am glad I did. There is nothing like treating yourself to some delicious pastries, and some with an island twist. I enjoyed eating their fritter and their sugar donuts. This was a good breakfast fix as we were making our way to the west side of the island.
If I can recall, they had a minimum amount for card use. So cash is the best option. - Al L.Alameda, CA970 friends1285 reviews9780 photos
2/8/2020I've heard about the poi glazed donuts at Kamehameha Bakery and had it on my to Try List. With so many new places to eat at when we are there for our annual trip, it looked like we would have to leave the poi donuts on the List until next year as our annual trip was coming to an end.
As part of a departing care package, I was surprised to receive a box of poi glazed and strawberry glazed donuts from one of our friends. It was a perfect snack at the airport as we waited for our plane.
The poi donut is their claim to fame. It's coated with a poi sugar glaze and it is so soft with a slight chewiness when you bite into it. They were not greasy and not overly sweet with a nice a balance of sweetness from the sugar and savoriness from the poi. The strawberry donut had a strawberry sugar glaze and was fluffy like the poi donut. I enjoyed them both, but favored the poi a little more as I liked the taste more.
So happy I don't have to wait until next trip to try Kamehameha donuts. Maybe I'll bring home a dozen of these fluffy pillows next time. - Huy L.Minneapolis, MN7 friends17 reviews27 photos
2/15/2020Poi glaze - your typical glazed donut, it was nice and fluffy
Banana fritter - you HAVE to get this. If a banana bread and an apple fritter had a babe, this is it. Its a must get!! You can thank me later :)

Kam Bakery has some of the best classic and local pastries. But there is one that surpasses all others by far-- the poi glaze donut. For those who are unfamiliar, it has a solid sugar crust coating a fluffy interior. The flavor is a nice balance of sweet and some-what savory from the sugar and poi. I recommend coming early, especially on weekends as there have been instances where they have run out of the poi glaze. When this has happened, I have tried a few other pastries that were also tasty, but nothing has really stood out to me like the poi glaze.

10/22/2019Today was my third time at this location. The first two was right after they moved to this location. On those two occasions the glazed donuts and the poi donuts would immediately soak the bag with oil.
Being a long time customer of Kamehameha Bakery at the old location this was never a problem. I'm pleased to say the oiliness is gone. The poi and glazed donuts
are back on track. Tried the snow ball cookies which I thought was just average. - Enrique D.Kapolei, HI

On Wednesday October 16, 2019, it was national bosses day, & I was delegated to pick up donuts for our boss. I got there super early and there was no line. I was quickly helped and I picked up a dozen of its famous poi donuts along with half dozen glazed donuts. I was in and out, lots of parking. When I got to work, I saw my co-worker with what appeared to be box of donuts too. I mentioned that it was not what I think it was. Long and behold, he too stopby Kam bakery afterwards I probably left. We laughed and ate our donuts with our boss, with coffee. The donuts were excellent, and soft.
I recommend this place to anyone, just come early cause they get crowded fast. - Santi T.San Diego, CA

Big fan of poi? Make a trip to Kamehameha Bakery!
I've been coming here since the previous location on School Street and would follow them anywhere for their old school and local pastries. My family's favorite has always been the Poi Glazed Donut ($1.05). Inside is an insanely bright purple dough made of poi and perfectly deep fried and coated with a sugar poi glaze. The yeast makes it like a light fluffy cloud. Sweet and not too greasy.
If you really know me, I'm not a fan of haupia (coconut) - not even in desserts. Please don't hate but it's just me! However, I do make an exception for their Poi Haupia Roll - poi roll filled with shredded coconut ($1.15). The baked poi rolls are injected with a mild coconut flavored pudding and oh so soft and not overly sweet. I can't understand why but these rolls are so delicious even with the biggest haupia critic.
When you step inside, the first thing you need to do is pull a ticket and listen for your number. I've done pre-orders of the Poi Glazed Donuts and it's always a big hit. If poi isn't your thing, they have a wide variety of goodies from Apple Fritters to their giant Ensemadas (super doughy and tasty).
They are located in the City Square Shopping Center and accepts cash and credit cards. If you're craving these donuts in the middle of the night, you're in luck because open at 2AM Monday-Friday and at 3AM on the weekends.
As for their haupia, I'll pass on everything but bring me one of their rolls and you've got a new friend! - Cynthia L.Temple City, CA
12/27/2019All my friends were telling me to try out kam bakery for their poi donut so I definitely had to try it out! We got there early around 8:30am and there were a couple of people in line already. They had ALOT of options and they're not typical donuts. We ordered poi donuts, the strawberry donut, hopia, banana fritters, blueberry donut which had jelly on top, raisin snail, cinnamon roll, chantilly donut and banana cream cheese roll. I must say their pastries are PRETTY GOOD! Their bread is super soft and the donuts are soft and a little chewy. It's a little on the sweeter side but I mean that's how all donuts are! I love that their prices are super reasonable too it's not overly priced so it's a definitely MUST TRY!

I had the opportunity to drop into Kamehameha Bakery on Veteran's Day Morning. It seems that all the bakery's were closed with the exception of Kam's. When I called and they said they were open...Yeahhhh! I drove right over.
I was so surprised at all the deliciousness available to purchase.
Anpan: Poi roll filled with black Sugar
Apple Everything: Apple Filled Malasadas, Apple Turnovers, & Apple Fritters.
Banana Banana: Banana Bread, Banana Whole Loves, Banana Fritters.
Bread Pudding, Pumpkin Bread Pudding, Brownies, Chantilly Rolls, Chocolate Puffs, Cookies, Doughnuts, Danishes, Hopia, cornbread, biscuits and cupcakes
They prices are very reasonable for all the many choices available. I recommend placing your order ahead of time. The nice lady said they come in at 2am to make all these mouthwatering treats. When they sell out...no more. It's gone.

This place is famous for its poi donuts and it still lives up to its reputation. Other bakery selections are also good too! Tried to come in early today in the morning and should've known better to expect a long line especially on a Halloween day. So many selections but was here for the poi donuts. They take credit cards too! Down side was price. I remember was .95 and was up to $1.15. I was mislead that their website menu/prices wasn't updated. In addition, people who phone ordered less than $10 worth has to be in line with the walk-ins. Will come in to try other selections.

Came by to try their poi and strawberry donuts
Review is for these two items only
I thought it was pretty overhyped
The donuts were fine, but there was very little poi or strawberry flavor
I took a bite of each and let my boyfriend finish the rest
It was pretty crowded when I went
I don't get it
The ladies working the bakery were very friendly though - Jenny T.San Jose, CA

Kamehameha Bakery has a good variety of baked goods to select from. All of the goods are also priced really well.
Some of the items we bought were the fried banana fritter, the strawberry donut, the strawberry filled donut, the chocolate custard donut, and the chantilly roll.
Overall, everything was just all right. Nothing quite stood out to me.
The price point makes it a great bakery to stop by and grab a variety of different items. I'll come back in the future to see if I can find something I really love.
The people working at the bakery were quite lovely as well. - Latasha K.Kailua, HI152 friends62 reviews46 photos

The other morning, we were in the Kalihi area and decided to stop in at Kamehameha Bakery for some pastries to take home. Walking in, there were about 5 people standing in line but when we pulled a ticket from the queue numbering dispenser, we found that we were going to be next in line to be helped. We quickly looked over the pastry displays and made our decision so that we'd be able to just order without taking much time as another 5 people followed us. Service was friendly and quick.
We usually order their donuts (poi, orange, strawberry or whatever's available) but this time around we ordered raisin snails, éclairs and "Honeymoons" with chocolate centers. We returned home to brew a pot of coffee and excitedly ripped into the box of pastries. While waiting for our brewing coffee, I plated our pastries on a paper doily because I noted greasy spots left in the box upon removal. Within a few minutes, as I poured our coffee and took a look at the paper doily underneath the pastries, I found the doily was SOAKED with oil from the fried éclairs and donuts.
I started to take a bite into the raisin snail and found the pastry to be gummy and heavy. It was like gut bomb and I could only eat 2 bites before pushing it off my plate. Worse yet, the éclair was oily smelling and heavy. The filling tasted like canned custard. Bleah! I dared not to try the Honeymoon.
SUMMARY:
These standard commercial bakery products exhibited poor execution as they were oily tasting and greasy smelling, heavy dense textured instead of airy yeast-risen products and bland tasting. I wished that we had stuck to getting their poi or orange donuts but then, again, I would be even more disappointed to find what I had rated highly a couple years ago had greatly diminished in quality and flavor like the products that we got.
8/8/2015Previous reviewThis "newer" location is so much more convenient to get to American Commercial Bakery items and pastries with local flair. Kamehameha Bakery is located in City Square on Kalani Street. There is ample parking as there are other eateries and businesses located in the City Square.
Kamehameha Bakery has been noted for their poi (taro), strawberry and orange glazed donuts as many locals flock to this store. They offer at least or maybe even more than 36 items that are baked, fried and sugared daily. Their pastries would always show up at our workplace potlucks or as treats for morning staff meetings. However, since I'm not in the workforce any longer, I refuse to wake up early (before 5 AM), drive to pick up pastries, stand in line (make sure you get a numbered ticket for service) and race to work by 6:30 AM. They'd always be so busy that they'd often sell out of these delectable donuts.
The other day as we were eating lunch at Utage which is located directly across the parking lot from Kamehameha Bakery, I convinced my husband to check out the pastries. It was after 1:00 PM so we weren't expecting to find much. But, we were so wrong! There were 2 others in the bakery and one of female workers assisted us right away..hey, we didn't even have to pull a number! They had half-empty trays of pastries but I had my heart set on the donuts. I inquired if I could order a dozen of assorted donuts (poi and strawberry) priced at $0.95 each. She cheerfully and affirmatively responded. I thought she was going to just take them out from the case but I noticed that she went back into the bakeshop where there were racks of full trays of freshly fried donuts. Score! As she handed the box over to me, I noticed that the box was warm from the fresh glazes as the sweet aromas wafted out from the box. Oh, how I had to fight with myself to NOT open the box and dive into the donuts. I held back because I truly was full from my lunch meal and I was bringing the donuts to a gathering that evening.
Even though we didn't get to eat the donuts until several hours later that evening, they were still fresh, soft, tasty and satisfied everyone's sweet tooth.

I'm so sorry, it's kinda overhyped.
I came in here to pick up a dozen poi donuts for my coworkers. Ordering is straightforward; take a number and go to the back of the line, then wait until your number is called. In addition to the poi donuts, I also picked up a strawberry glazed donut and a taro haupia roll.
The poi and strawberry glazed donuts were nice doughy pieces of fried goodness, but didn't taste anything like poi or strawberries. I enjoyed the taro haupia rolls though; they were full of haupia flavor and were warm and soft. The prices were reasonable.
What threw me off was that I saw a cockroach scurrying around on the floor of the bakery. Aiya. Otherwise, it's a decent place for baked goods.
