Not a chain, breakfast & lunch only, and a solid reputation over many years for being consistently good. I've been to both meals several times and definitely agree. Today was breakfast.
Arriving- Not many folks have been to Frostproof as it's so tiny. It's a five mile straight shot off US Route 27. Big parking lot so that's not a problem.
Ambience- Typical. Kitsch on the walls, booths and tables and a counter that seats 8-10. You've seen it all before. Kids are welcome.
Customer Service- Several of the servers have been there many years and seen it all. You can expect them to be friendly and efficient. I've never had a problem.
Food- It's rural Central Florida folks so expect standard American fare.
This visit I Ordered a Meatlovers Omelet with Home Fries. It came with my choice of toast or a biscuit, but I skipped that because I knew I was getting a lot of food! Of course, I had coffee. The pre-tip tab was about $14.
As you can see, a lot of food! The cook knows how to finish home fries. Note the beautiful browning but not burnt. They need a little more seasoning but still very good. The omelet was huge and packed with proteins. Delicious!
So, you're blowing down route 27, maybe with the little munchkins, and you need a reliable breakfast or lunch. You're sick of chains. You can't go wrong here, and you should expect a 4-star experience!Helpful 71Thanks 5Love this 72Oh no 0Dec 16, 2020Previous reviewIt was a special day for me today!
I had the honor of treating a beautiful girl to a B-day lunch and this amazing lady was 93 years young. When you are that old, trust me, birthdays are really special!
I've been to this place for breakfast several times but never for lunch so off we went. As usual it was spotless inside and all employees were wearing masks and there was lots of sanitizer.
We each had a soft drink right away and massive menus. This is a standard American fare place and everything you could ever want is there. I went with the Open-faced Roast Beef Sandwich for about $9.
My birthday girl decided she wanted an $8 Tuna Salad Plate and ordering it was a bit of a challenge. When you're 93, sometimes the words in your brain don't come out of your mouth quite right. Our server was very patient, and we got it done.
Everything came out quickly. The Tuna Salad Plate looked very fresh and my B-day girl confirmed it and smiled with every bite. My sandwich was just as expected and fine. The mashed potatoes were excellent, and the green beans were canned. I would have been shocked if they weren't in a little casual place like this.
As I like to say, this place had no surprises. Standard American food, sizable portions priced right and served with a smile. I had one happy smiling old lady!Oct 13, 2017Previous reviewConsidering the name, I assumed breakfast was the meal to try so off I went. It feels so good to be right!
First impressions- Nice parking lot. Friendly greetings by multiple folks as I walked in. Unbelievably clean! Country & Western music. A long counter plus another room with plenty of booths. Brightly painted. I'll say it one more time. This place is hospital clean!
Customer service- Perfection! I'm told some of the servers have worked here through four owners and have decades of service. It really shows with genuine smiles and wonderful attentiveness.
Food- I was looking at a standard American breakfast menu with all the classics represented. I went with the ham & cheese omelet with home fries and my choice of bread for six bucks and change. Along with my bottomless cup of good coffee my bill was less than ten bucks.
When my meal arrived, I laughed. I usually don't take a mid-morning nap but this was going to be one of those days. Check out my picture. This was a massive breakfast and I really appreciated that it was not greasy. I enjoyed every bite that I could get down but I couldn't finish it!
These folks are only open for breakfast and lunch. Once again, the lunch menu looks like classic American food. I'll be back for sure to try it. - 734438Mar 22, 2024
Diner and restaurant that served more than eggs. I had a veggie omelet that had fake, processed, orange cheese. The fried potatoes were fried nicely on the outside but mushy on the inside. It was nice to have the choice of an English muffin as a choice of toast. The other breakfast entree was a waffle with blueberries and a slice of ham. Was pretty good - thick, golden waffle with lots of blueberry pie filling. The ham slice was thick and a generous serving. Average coffee, only regular creamers only available. Service was great and friendly.

Place is disgusting! I hear the owner constantly yelling at staff! What do bad is the food is in big proportion and really good... so it was a big kick to go to the rest room and look in the kitchen and see what i saw! Never again!

Seems likes it's always closed when I pass by . I went by today and we we're 4 cars deep just to realize it was close.

To recap my rating criteria, especially when it comes to breakfasts, 1) it must be huge portions, 2) reasonable and competitive prices compared with the market area 3) average or better service in the market area.
We dropped into Johnny's Egg Works - my first time to this mom & pop kind of place. Their hours are 7 AM - 2:30 PM so it's for breakfast and lunch only. The interior had a vibe of a former 50"s - 60's highway diner which has been pleasantly updated through color and decor. And it was clean.
Upon taking a seat we were quickly greeted and our drink orders taken, and soon thereafter delivered. Our server was back within a very acceptable timeframe and friendly and efficiently took our orders. Yeah, I'm that customer that always seems to ask for a substitute to be made (something my dining partners were quick to point out). The server cheerfully allowed my substitution.
Again after only a very short wait our meals were out in front of us. The portion size of my Ultimate Omelette, grits and pancake exceeded criteria #1. As a fact this is one of the largest pancakes I've had outside my own kitchen. And my other dining partners seemed to agree on their portion sizes as well. Criteria #2 - the quality of the food also exceeded my expectations. The Ultimate has about every type of meat you can get in an omelette and in the perfect proportions - not to much of one and too little of another. Criteria #3 - if you got the feeling from my previous comments the service was good, my apologies- the service was GREAT! After our orders were delivered the server came by to check on us and ask if refills were needed. At all times the staff was pleasant and not overly intrusive.
All in all, this was a great dinning experience. At least get this on your list for breakfasts. I hope to be reviewing Johnny's again after a lunch. I hear they have a HUGE burger!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Refmann L.Orlando, FL1189Dec 29, 2017
The prices are affordable. My partner and I got the bacon and cheese omelet, veggie omelet, both with biscuits and hash browns.
The omelets are huge. I enjoyed the veggie one and it also had some cheese in it. The bacon and cheese had way too much cheese. We were split on the biscuits. I liked them and she said they were not fluffy enough. They were fresh so good enough for me. The hash browns or homefries were too mushy. I would ask for them extra crispy.
Service was friendly and attentive.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - James W.Ocala, FL1302Mar 31, 2019
