Q:
Do they serve champagne? I did a Yelp search for restaurants that serve beer and wine and this is the 3rd place that doesn't have any alcohol on the menu. I think a menu page is missing. Do they serve champagne?

I ordered the eggs benedict gluten free and grapefruit juice, so it's hard to serve anything especially fabulous but I was very happy with it. It's standard fair, tasty breakfast. Would I recommend it to people visiting? Not especially. Would I go back? Totally.

I went there for breakfast last week, after not eating at Joanie's since it's last location. Since I can only eat gluten free and dairy free foods, they made oatmeal especially for me with oatmilk. It was very nice of them to go out of their way, and I really appreciate it. I will definitely come back

Joanie's is a great weekend brunch spot. They have lots of egg & omelette dishes as well as pancakes, French toast, and usually some interesting daily specials. There is always a 15-20 minute wait on the weekend, but they get you in as fast as possible. The service is attentive and the food is delicious. They also offer gluten free toast with your eggs for no extra charge!

How did I not know about this place?!?! (Btw, thank you fellow Yelpers.) Wonderful food and service. They have it all and most importantly, focus on health and freshness. Gluten free options. Delicious organic coffee with refills. Prepare to wait for a table for breakfast on the weekend but let me assure you, Joanie's Cafe is worth the wait, and they will gladly serve you a beverage to help pass the time.

The best breakfast around this area, and it's served all day. I love that they offer gluten free toast. Everything tastes like care was put into making it.
Breakfast is served all day and you have a choice of hash browns or home fries. Both potato options are strong, but the home fries are very garlicky and depending on what you order, could overpower the meal.
Joanie (the owner) is really thoughtful and kind. The current staff is excellent too. This business has been in the community for a very long time, I hope it sticks around forever. If you arrive on a weekend for brunch, expect to wait a very long time.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jun 7, 2011Previous reviewIt was Sunday morning, most likely the busiest of days for the brunch crowd but on top of that also the California Ave Farmers Market was in full swing. We have a party of four and I was told it was under the name "Ryan". An extra person joined our group so I was asked to add them. Joanie's Cafe does not seem to have a person monitoring the wait list, it only has a piece of paper that you add your name- I had no idea that their was another party of people under the name Ryan with a party of 4. Eventually it was figured out, no big deal. I wish we could have all laughed about the confusing situation but instead we were confronted by an extremely rude host, he literally placed blame on my party and gave serious attitude. Awkward as it was, he then seats us but never apologizes. Then the staff takes almost 30 minutes to bring water and menus, it was unclear if this was intentional at this point. OK, so they are busy...right? They take our order, the waitress is lacking positive energy. We order coffee for all 5 people, as the man is pour in the coffee in the center island area- 5 feet away he is rolling his eyes and muttering to another staff member about how much coffee we are drinking, not appropriate. Our food comes slowly, its good not much better then any other brunch in the area. The next day one of the people in our party of five falls extremely ill, like 2 days of food poisoning/vomitting and the only thing she ate all day was at Joanie's.
I am still not 100% convinced all these things happened intentionally or as connected events, either way I found it made me disappointed in my dining experience. If I were Joanie, I would re-think the entire staff you have right now. They made what used to be a wonderful breakfast place just awful.
Joanie's Cafe was in the five star category sometime in the late 1980's until the early 90's, when I was between the ages of 8-11 years old, every Wednesday morning before school we would go to Joanie's. I knew the staff by name and I had my regular order. More than 15+ years have gone by and things have changed, the newer staff is extremely rude and inefficient and the food seems less thoughtful and more mediocre. - Sophi S.San Francisco, CA525610Aug 13, 2012
Reasons I'm obsessed with Joanie's:
1) Cal Ave. is adorable and right next to my apartment. Great location, and a nice way to begin/end a Farmers' Market jaunt on Sundays.
2) The coffee is delicious. I take my coffee black, so I definitely value tasty joe at my brunch spots.
3) The hash browns, ordered extra crispy.
4) Mexican Scramble.
5) They let me sub fruit for toast/muffin since I can't eat gluten.
6) The wait isn't too bad most Saturday/Sundays.
7) The lady at the front is so sweet!
8) Some of the servers are pretty fun, sassy/playful but professional.
9) Their eggs are attentively prepared and consistently in the top echelon of tastiness.
10) Goat Cheese Omelette.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jennifer J.Durham, NC3466234Aug 24, 2013
Joanie's hits a home run in brunch excellence: friendly, attentive service, a bright and homey atmosphere, and flavorful food with generous portions. The restaurant is medium sized, with bright windows and shiny wood tables and counters, and some outdoor seating. Arriving on a Sat morning, my friend and I were seated at a table right away and given plenty of time to order. Tip: come before 11am to beat the weekend crowd.
Joanie's Cafe made the best scramble with salmon I've ever had, hands-down. My custom order was overflowing with tasty and salty salmon, fresh chives, and spinach. The side of melon was decent though slightly underripe, and the gluten-free toast was as expected. My friend had an absurdly large serving of French toast, super soft and thick cut, and brought home nearly half of her plate. Overall, Joanie's cooks up one wonderful brunch!

This is your very American brunch place, not the classy mimosa brunch that you wear a day dress to. Think omelets, and hot cocoa, and hash browns. The food is good. My omelet was HUGE and had SO much feta cheese in it, you wouldn't believe it. The hash browns were amazing and my mom thoroughly enjoyed her tuna melt. In fact she liked it so much, she kept eating after she was full, which doesn't happen normally.
I would personally say that the portions were huge, I couldn't finish my omelet, even after I shared with my mom and my dad, same goes for hash browns. My dad, however, left a bit hungry. Can't say that about my mom and myself.
I didn't get to try my mom's tuna melt, because I suspected it had onions and garlic in it (I was right).
The service was great. My drink was refilled before I could finish it, so was my dad's gluten free bread. I got to try the jam, which was really good. They didn't even kick the customers out, even though it was past their closing time!!!
