Everyone should have a nearby BBQ Joint that they love and that's fairly easy in Florida because there are bunches of them! This one is less than 5 easy miles from my abode.
Back Story- I'm a huge supporter of businesses that give back to the community and James is the Poster Child for that in my little town. He's always there when charities or volunteer organizations need help and that is hugely appreciated! I return the favor by patronizing him as much as I can.
Arriving- It's off the beaten path but your GPS will easily find it. Parking is a tiny lot but there is usually a space.
Pro Tip- They have limited hours so take a minute to check before you go.
Ambience- It's too tiny to have much ambience! The entire place is four booths but there is also outside seating.
Customer Service- You order, pick up, and pay for your food at the counter. The menu is on the wall. I've found the folks at the register to always be just fine.
Food- Typical small Q joint. Ribs, Pulled Pork, Brisket etc. Lots of typical sides. He does have a fryer so there's French fries, hush puppies, corn nuggets etc.
I went with a Brisket Platter with two sides, and I picked corn nuggets and cole slaw. I got it to-go and it was about $17.
As always it was a very satisfying meal! The brisket was nice and tender, The corn nuggets were still hot, and the slaw was crispy fresh. I love the mustard bbq sauce. A solid meal that really hit the spot! Stop by here for great Q!Helpful 61Thanks 9Love this 58Oh no 0Dec 5, 2020Previous reviewIt's hard to be loved and get hundreds of reviews if you are off the beaten track and that's the case with JBs.
James is a super nice guy and an excellent Pit Master. If you mention his name in Highlands County, folks will either smile or start drooling and both tell the story.
James doesn't do brisket every day but when he does, he puts one of those tall skinny flapping signs outside that says, you guessed it, Brisket! My car automatically pulled in and parked. I didn't even need to touch the steering wheel!
I could have ordered a brisket sandwich and if I did it would be THIN sliced and piled high. I opted for the dinner which is huge THICK slices and two sides. It goes for just under $15 and was out in about five minutes.
I headed home with this bad boy and the aroma in the car was driving me crazy. Check out my picture. The slices were huge and moist with my choice of sauce on the side. I smiled with every bite! Note that when folks see that brisket sign, the often stop in and order it by the pound to take home. They do the same with his pulled pork.
So, some day you'll be blowing through Highlands County on US 27 and you'll spot him on Yelp. Call first to make sure he's open and just go. You won't regret it!Jan 15, 2016Previous reviewYou need Yelp to find a place like this! It's on a side street in tiny little Avon Park. You're never going to find it by just driving by.
There is no real parking. You just kind of pull over on the curb. It doesn't look like much form the outside or the inside but as you experience it there are a couple of things to note. There is a front patio with a couple of tables. There is also a back deck with some picnic tables. There is even well marked handicapped access. Let's call the ATMOSPHERE hole-in-wall plus.
I ordered the Jumbo Pulled Pork Sandwich at $5.00 along with $3.00 Hush Puppies. I added a can of ice cold soda and my total was $9.10. I could have ordered chicken or ribs or catfish and lots of typical sides.
I sat down at one of the four inside booths and there must have been a dozen sauces to choose from. That's always appreciated. My order was ready quickly and as you can see, everything is served in take-out containers. This is a no-frills kind of place.
The Pups were amazing and piping hot. I could feel my cholesterol spiking. The pork was very good. Lots of flavor and juicy. I wasn't a huge fan of the roll. It was a little too dry and ordinary for me.
It was overall great food. The next time I visit, and there will be a next time, chicken is on my list. - Nov 5, 2023
Okaaaayyy! Helllll-oooo, you amazing little gem! We stopped and got takeout for the park. We were driving by and did a U-Turn to try this place. I stayed in the car with our toddler, but my dude said the people working here were soooo nice and he kept raving about how nice they were. He's usually a complainer, so this is a huge compliment. Another customer overheard we just saw it on the road, and he said he eats there every week and you can't go wrong! The food was soooo good. I love me a good brisket because I grew up in Texas. Sadly it's hard to find! But it's good here! Loved their mustard bbq sauce too. And the fries were perfectly crispy. The collard greens had amazing flavor. The peach cobbler was perfection. I'm glad we got a pound of brisket cuz I'm going to eat the shit outta it!

Great food! Worth the drive, the BBQ is in the top 5 places in Highlands County for sure! If your looking for cheap BBQ go to Sonny's and leave the good food for the rest of us. I live in Miami and every time we get a chance we go for broke at JB"s. The place is small but comfy, usually we get our feast to go so we don't look like savages lol call before you go they do run out of brisket and ribs from time to time.

Delicious, but simple barbecue place. The food is what you would call true Southern cuisine. It's definitely worth a visit. Make sure you get extra barbecue sauce, although the ribs and brisket have a delicious smoky flavor without the sauce.

Called in a big order to feed my guys at Sebring Raceway. It was a bit of a drive... but completely worth it. The standouts were the Brisket (juicy & tender), the ribs, the Mac & Cheese & Collard Greens. Also loved the whole smoked chickens and pulled pork! The BBQ sauces were delicious! Will definitely come back the next race event we are here. A bit Of a hole in the wall.... But the food speaks for itself! Try it. Very friendly staff.

Fantastic Pulled Pork and greens. Stopped for a sandwich, just for future reference. Finished my sandwich, went back in for 3 pounds to go. Greens were pretty good also. Wish they were open during the week. BUT the map doesn't show a small lake that divides Cornell st. JBs is East of the lake, you'll have to navigate around it
