Wow what a wonderful surprise this place was! Located in a strip mall, it looks pretty unassuming from the outside. But walking in, the space transformed and opened up way more than I was expecting. Decor and ambiance were nice, fair to call it izakaya vibes.
Had a reservation at 6pm on a Saturday with family, and we were immediately seated. Think reservations would definitely be a good idea - it was busy and there were people waiting for a table when we left.
The menu is extensive and gives you a lot of options for how you want to shape your meal. Can do family style or individual. For our party of 4, we ended up sharing everything:
- Yakitori (4): Delicious! Each skewer is tiny so we ordered four so everyone could have their own. So much flavor.
- Ninnikume Itami (stir-fried garlic sprouts with pork): A favorite! Love ramps and it's rare to see them on menus (especially in January haha)
- Kurobuta Misozukeyaki (miso marinated black pork): Marinated thinly sliced pork over a bed of dressed raw onions. Also so flavorful.
- Bento Box: This was huge. Loved the crispy shrimp tempura and agedashi tofu in this.
- Sushi Rolls! Namesake Sanpei, Lions (Go Lions!), and Spicy Salmon all very tasty with fresh tasting fish.
All in all, we were stuffed and very impressed with the meal. Looking forward to coming back and trying their hot pot, shabu shabu, or sukiyaki next time! Some other tables had them and they looked impressive and very good.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 12153272Jan 23, 2024
Great find in the middle of the neighborhood! Sushi is excellent and all other food is great! Sapporo on tap (hope they get Kirin on tap some time).
Long wait time to get a table, service slow in general but food worth it. Just don't think you'll be in and out.
We've gone on a Friday and it seems like it's Hotpot night so we'll try that next time!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1090226Jan 20, 2024
My family and I have been coming here for years. Their pricing stays consistent and their service and cleanliness is always great.
The tempura udon is a great affordable meal and will have you full. The broth was flavorful and the noodles were a good consistency.
The nigiri comes out in huge slices of fish that melt in your mouth.
Definitely get the squid karaage. So delicious!
We got the hawaiian volcano roll which came in a nice presentation lit on fire. It was delicious. The two other special rolls we ordered were HUGE and worth the price.
Said it was my birthday and received a free dessert which consisted of fried banana and icecream. They also sang happy birthday to me!
Love it here!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Rebecca S.West Bloomfield Township, MI012Apr 21, 2024

We love coming here especially after our daughters swim class at Aqua-Tots which is next door. Food is always fresh and staff is always attentive. Always a pleasant experience.

I just wrote an absolute banger of a review for House of Umami so I have to offset my negativity that I just put out here. This place has been fantastic for years and I've been a repeat customer. The food is reasonably priced for Japanese food in America and it is also generally authentic enough for me to not have complaints. The service team is wonderful and I could not praise them enough. The ambiance and decor that were present at House of Umami are also great here. They also offer a 5% discount if you pay with cash (I think, I've never done it lol). Great food, and they also offer many more options than competitors. Sorry for talking about another restaurant in this, they've been rent free in my head since I went.

Was craving sushi and wanted to try out a new place. Appreciated how easy it was to order online. Easy to find, and the order was ready exactly when they said it would be. We got 4 different roles and 3 appetizers for about $55. Pretty nice cost all things considered. Very filling rolls. Not at all skimpy on their filling. 1 entire roll is in the fridge for lunch tomorrow. Would definitely come back.
