Truly the best neighborhood spot! Mama Hunan is so so sweet, the food is always delicious, and she means it when she says ready in 10-15 minutes. Our house does weekly Sunday Hunan, and we've never been disappointed. Our go to's are the combo fried rice, the beef and broccoli (fresh and so yummy!), potstickers and the egg flower soup (SO delicious). Definitely more of a take out spot than a dine in, but she has the place crowded for sit down sometimes too! (FYI they don't do delivery anymore).
I think the hours for this place on yelp are wrong. Came here at 1pm on a Saturday (non-holiday) and it was closed. We didn't get to try the food but I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone else, so that they don't waste a trip here if it's closed. Please call them beforehand to see if they are open.
Food is top notch. Delicious, filling, and reasonably priced. Hours unpredictable. They may be closed during times they say they're open. Best to call to make sure they're open before going, but they don't always answer. They are so nice.
This tiny Chinese food restaurant in the Richmond District presents a limited but superb menu. It is superior to any Chinese food venue outside of the coastal cities and rivals any of them for flavor and texture. Our party of five ordered pot stickers for starters and then shared meals built around seafood or Kungpao offerings with black bean sauce. We also had a spicy tofu plate. Water and Chinese green tea were our drink choices, although soft drinks are also available. The service was attentive and highly informed. The chef and waitress/owner have been serving food here for at least three decades, since the restaurant was there when we lived in the area in the 1980s. However, the place has now become a very high quality eatery. Park on the street. Reservations aren't necessary, but I'd call ahead to check availability. There are only six tables for four. This place has to be on your checklist if you are in the city for a few days. It's worth the 20-30 minute drive or Uber/Lyft ride to get out there.
We came here around 7pm on a Wednesday and were the only ones dining in. I don't think they are used to people coming in to sit and eat (mostly take out), but the woman who was working the front counter was so sweet and accommodating. She got us set up and was very attentive. We ordered the cashew chicken, pork fried rice, and shredded beef. Everything was delicious and paired perfectly together. We also ordered pot stickers, which weren't my favorite but were okay. I would recommend that you do take out, but we still had a nice time. The leftover food was great as breakfast the next day too!
This is our neighborhood go to and damn it's delicious. We order takeout a couple of times a month and it's always fantastic. Ms LiLi is a treat and always so kind to our family, remembers our son, and just a treat to engage with.
Not just being biased because I recently moved into the area, but some of the best Chinese takeout I've had in California. Lily is amazingly polite and one of our favorite neighbors. Food is consistently delicious and she is even remembers our order by heart! Hot and sour soup is a definite favorite.
My favorite local restaurant to order out from! Found this place when my boyfriend and I moved in to the neighborhood a couple months and ago and it is now our go to! The owner is a sweetheart! She will remember you and your order. It's the kind of service you don't find anymore. The food is also sooo good! We tried the place up the street and the food DID NOT EVEN COMPARE to this place. Don't look further, try it out :)
I think this is probably some of the best and most consistent Chinese food in this part of the city. Don't let the fact that you'll never see anybody in there. They do a very good to go business in the neighborhood and you can eat there as well. The food is really very very good. I really like the hot and sour soup And the orange peel chicken. I really have never gotten anything I haven't really enjoyed from them. And they are super nice
It's good, it's cheap but it bears no resemblance to Hunanese food. As other reviewers have said, it's empty most of the time, but this is not a reflection of the food. Their business is almost entirely take out. Don't go there for the ambiance. My only real gripe is that I wanted the hot, smoky flavor of Hunanese food and that is not what they serve. Even their dishes marked as spicy have only slight heat at most.
I feel like I got played. Appetizer was good, main food was not. Hostess was very polite, but that's not enough to make me ever go back.
Come here for affordable, home-cooked meals. You can still get an entree for about $8 - a rare find in SF. The food isn't swanky but it's honest, authentic, and has a made-at-home taste to it. Despite the cafe's small size, it has probably at least 6-7 tables inside and can probably seat at least 20-25 comfortably throughout the whole restaurant. The decor is old-fashioned and traditional. The place isn't fancy but the food isn't lacking in quality by any means unless of course you are looking for something fancy, experimental, hip, fusion, or "modern". This place is traditional. One more perk: I came here on a Saturday night and ordered a dish to-go. They had it ready for me in under three minutes. Again, if you're looking for historical, traditional Chinese food done well and done right, look no further.
I would recommend try everything. My favorite is sesame chicken and hot & sour soup. chicken is great also. Everything I have there is good. Best for take out, unless you do the lunch special dine in only. My daughter loves this place and the corn flour soup.
This is a gem harkening back to the San Francisco, when you could get authentic, home-cooked meals for $6-$7. The service was excellent, prompt, and the food amazing. Try the eggrolls and any chicken entree.
Loved the mangolian chicken and the vegetarian fried rice. Small place but very tasty and authentic Chinese food.
I do enjoy a good box of fried rice now and then. This will satisfy the craving. I have not tried everything on the menu however everything I've tried has been good. Never have I personally gotten sick from this yet. So all in all I can recommend this. The place itself is not very well kept up so unfortunately I can't give this place 5 stars in my review because it really wouldn't be hard for them to keep it extra clean for people. I saw in the back room where they cook and it was filthy looking! Bathroom as well.
Hidden Gem. Hot, fast and good. It's a quaint mom & pop, that's actually run by the mom and pop. It's desperately holding its own as its largest competitor is on the opposite end of the block. The prices are awesome, the food is good but the feeling that you are literally putting food on their table as you are enjoying the food on yours, is the best. They don't have a lot of Standing Room, and it's a rudimentary at best, but if you want a quiet place where your waitress is a hostess, is the manager, and is the owner, and is always feeling your glass and asking you about your day, then you need to eat here. They don't have any house delivery, but I am sure you can use GrubHub or some other service to pick up your food. I don't recommend this because when you walk in the smile on the hostess face just lights up whatever mood your in.
1st time here and will not be the last, I ordered the kung pao chicken and enjoyed every single bite, it was absolutely delicious
Great quick, easy, cheap neighborhood chinese take out spot. Prices have increased but still a great deal considering the portion size. Love their fried rice and stir fry dishes. Would recommend if you are feeling lazy and looking for a convenient, cheap and satisfying take-out meal to eat on the couch and binge a show with.
Everything we've ordered from here is delicious. We love the Kung pao veggies, orange chicken (so good!) and veggie lo mein in particular. Always so fast and fresh for takeout. Highly recommend! It truly feels like an Asian grandmother we never had cooking for us.
