Truly one of the hidden gems in the area. There must be a reason why the OG's are regulars here and I definitely seen and tasted it. Everything is made from scratch and made to order! I'm glad we stopped in because it's been so long so we've been by! We ordered : Pork Dumplings w/ Chives, Chicken Dumplings w/ Chives and Shanghai Soup Dumplings. The filling on all we ordered was very flavorful (other places in the area have a tendency to be a bit on the bland side).
I have no idea why this place has such good reviews with such poor quality of food. I ordered take out here for the first time and ordered 3 items - Kung Pao Chicken, Spicy Chicken Drumsticks and Wings, and Sweet and Sour Chicken. 2 out of the 3 items were SO disappointing. Kung Pao Chicken - no flavor Sweet and Sour Chicken - THE MOST DISAPPOINTING ITEM. Mostly veggies no chicken. I ordered sweet and sour chicken not sweet and sour onions and peppers. It was 95% onions and peppers and 5% chicken Spicy Chicken Drumsticks and Wings - the only decent item, but it wasn't even spicy. It was such a disappointment and I will not come back here again.
Went to this place on a Thursday afternoon and there were about 4 tables taken and the place. The place is kind small but enough room when it's not overly crowded The five spices marinated beef with cold noodle were pretty good and it was nice on a 85 degree day. The noodles were a good amount chewy and the beef tasted good. The green pancakes and the pork dumpling with green chives were also good! I'd get the pork implying again because they were decently filled with meat and felt full! Plus there were a good amount of them. The soup dumplings were okay in my opinion but they didn't have enough soup in them and the skin felt kind of thicker than other places I've had them. Overall, I'd come back to try more of what they had on the menu.
House of Dumplings is a gem of a place. I love me a good hole-in-the-wall! The interior is quite small, it can probably only seat about 20 ish people. My family always orders the Napa cabbage dumplings, spicy bean noodles, chicken fried rice, and Chinese green onion pancake. Their dumplings are so delicious! They have a thick skin and alotta meat. The spicy bean noodles are also super yummy. They have just enough spice and are a great palette cleanser between dishes. The Chinese green onion pancake is nice and flaky, but it doesn't fall apart. Chewy, but not overly doughy. The chicken fried rice is also great. Good flavor throughout, and never clumpy or dry! We also recently tried the shredded Chinese pancake. They only serve a certain amount each day, so get there quickly! The dish is what it sounds like--pieces of shredded Chinese pancake, except the pieces aren't fried, it's just dough. It came with shrimp, chicken, beef, and egg mixed in. It was the perfect mashup of the elements found in fried rice and green onion pancake. Karen, the owner, is also the sweetest lady. She always remembers my family and asks how we're doing. Whether we do take-out or dine in, House of Dumplings is one of my family's favorite places.
Interior - Basic, simple, open layout for quick and easy Chinese food. Service - Good. Shanghai soup dumplings - Do not order. The skin was sticky and tore off at the bottom. The top was hard and dry. There was soup in some, none in others. Flavor was average. Mustard Green Noodle Soup - Vegan, slightly sour, hot, comforting. Overall decent but not memorable. String Beans - Flavorful, oily, and salty. Three Flavor Dumplings (Pork, Shrimp, Chives) - Better than the soup dumplings, thick, chunky and savory.
Small non-descript place in a corner next to a liquor store off Mission Blvd.-didn't see many restaurants here among these nice houses. We just finished a basketball tournament at CaliSports gym so great place to go on the breaks and the nearest restaurant. This would be a great neighborhood restaurant for the houses nearby who love dumplings. It was a hot sweltering day so perfect for sesame cold noodles. This was an okay dish in flavor, I would suggest to the owner, combine shredded carrots with the cucumbers and double the sauce then it would be good. This dish tasted bland which sesame paste often does. It tasted just like plain boiled noodles and sesame was too subtle. Add green slivered onions and fresh cilantro, more sesame oil. Sometimes sesame paste can be mixed or use peanut butter warmed with hot water and add to coat noodles and sesame oil. Experiment with this- you will like it and try it out with your customers. Can add chopped peanuts on top too( just have peanut allergy warning). Rest of the food was decent and good. Fruit flavored chicken wings( fried as is and not a crunchy, crispy kind- tastes like baked or stir fried). Shanghai dumplings were decent and soupy/juicy when you bite into it-the way it is supposed to be. Spring rolls were ok. Green onion pancakes stuffed with ground beef was different, but good. I liked it-never had it like that before at a Chinese restaurant. I really like the hot and sour soup bc it had lily buds, lots of tofu, pork, etc. Usually they don't have the pickled mustard greens and lily buds which is the authentic way and I really like it the traditional way- so best hot and sour soup I have had in a long time which hit the spot! Everything tasted freshly made and cooked or fried up and given hot. They had LOTS of other dishes I wanted to try as the pictures on the wall I thought was a good idea so you can see what you are ordering! I liked the place and the friendly owner who took her time to explain the dishes which I appreciated! Lots of regular customers and it was 3 pm yet still packed with people! This will be my go-to whenever I am out here! I want to try their other specialty dumplings bc I love dumplings! Oh and the buns that someone ate next to us looked so good and freshly made, too- next time I am getting those! Great little place!
Overall it is a good experience. The place was a bit small and not as clean as expected. But the food was good, such as cold plates and dumplings. Multiple beef pancake was the only not recommended item.
Have come to House of Dumplings a couple of more times since my last review as well as have ordered takeout from them and each one of my meals has been a definite 5 stars. First off, they seemed to have taken feedback from my last review about their salt & pepper fish dish as now, the fish to veggie ratio is great with plenty of fish on the plate. The 3 flavor dumplings has also proven to be very consistent and we get it each time we come here with no disappointment. I also love their beef noodle soup. The beef is really tender and melts right in your mouth and the bok choy they include is broken up into small bits, not huge bits of plant that take forever to chew like at some other places. But what's more, the broth itself is one of the best things ever. It reminds me of how my grandma used to make it, super hearty and rich, total Chinese comfort food. House of Dumplings is now one of my go to places in Union City - keep it up!
3.5 stars--Decent dumplings, but have had better in the Bay. To give the benefit of the doubt, maybe we just ordered some less popular dishes. Came here with a friend for a late lunch and was seated right away at this small restaurant. They honestly have a pretty extensive menu and I was so hungry after hiking Dry Creek, I wanted to devour everything! In the end, we decided on ordering the Pot Stickers, Shanghai Soup Dumplings, String Beans, and Salt & Pepper Tofu. My favorite was probably the String Beans which were fresh and garlicky! You could see workers snapping the ends off them at the next table, and they really lived up to how fresh they were. The dish also came with some crispy fried tofu. Had we known, we wouldn't have gotten the Salt & Pepper Tofu since it was slightly redundant. The Pot Stickers were HUGE! They took the longest to come, probably for this reason. The outside was fried, but I wished the wrapper could have been more crispy. We were super thrilled to see soup oozing out of the hot pot stickers when we first opened them up, but the meat and soup were slightly underwhelming. I think the flavor was not as meaty and the soup was slightly more sour rather than sweet. I felt the same way about the meat and soup in the Shanghai Soup Dumplings, though the wrapper of those were pretty good. Overall, I think we might have ordered some things that weren't as popular here. I really enjoyed the String Beans, but the dumplings we decided on fell a bit short for me. Maybe next time if I give this place another chance, I'll try some different spicy cold dishes and noodles!
I'll give this place one star just coz they delivered. I'm baffled how it got 4 star reviews. It is too bad because we even ordered a lot. My boyfriend ordered fried rice which just looks like regular rice and beef and pork was just mixed in it. It is also wet. The five spice marinated beef seemed boiled and that's it and little salty and a bit tough. The Xiao long bao was a little dry for what it is supposed to be with soup in it. Honey walnut shrimp is one of my favorite things to order for Chinese food and it was a bit dry too. Lastly the pork fried noodles was also blah. Will never order takeout or eat in this restaurant again.
This is the best spot to eat we moved away about two years ago but any chance we get we stop by to eat and see our good friend and owner Karen
SUMMARY: I'd eat here several times a week if I lived in this neighborhood :). And the lady owner is the sweetest person. So sweet I started referring to her as Dumpling Aunty to my wife! BACKGROUND: i can here after my doc's appointment to get some dumplings to get my dumpling fix on. It's about 5 miles away from Kaiser Union City, so not close but not too far away. FOOD So yes the dumplings: they are definitely homemade and you'll know it from the first bite. We ordered two kinds, the 3 Flavor Dumplings and the Pork with Chives. Also we ordered marinated pig ears as well as lotus roots appetizers. The Lotus roots were so damn good that I quietly ate about 75 pct of them while my wife was talking about her business hehe. And the pig ears were definitely one of the better cold pig ear dishes I've had in awhile. They were perfectly marinated and not too much soy which a lot of places do. As for the dumplings it was no comparison. The 3 Flavors one really stood out in terms of flavor. It was a good blend of protein choices too. All of it seemed to meld well together. The pork and chives were also good but the 3 Flavors really was just head and shoulders above it. ATMOSPHERE Definitely nothing fancy but maintained well enough for a family style restaurant. RETURN VISIT? Yup! In fact we are heading there right now as soon as our EV gets a little more juice in it!
Not impressed *McKayla Maroney face* I think I was expecting more dim sum, less of the Chinese entrees (fried rice, chow mein, etc). I grew accustomed to the push carts, so not seeing them led to further disappointment. Ordering from the menu was okay, but given the small options for dim sum, I wasn't thrilled about the selection. My friend explained that the offerings were from Northern China, which had more dumplings than the traditional dim sum. Now, I know... What we ordered: - Onion pancake: lacked flavor so much that I had to dip it in soy sauce - Chicken dumplings: generous portion size of the filling - S&P wings: *best part of meal*, but that's not saying much I was surprised to find that at noon on a Sunday, the place had 1-2 tables occupied. This ended up working out to our advantage because there was no wait and we were able to order right away. I think that was the one thing going for it... wish I could say more though :/
I don't know how this place gets 4 stars overall?! Please do not come to this place unless you want to donate your money for a bad experience. Beef noodle soup was ok. We also tried 4 dishes from the dim sum menu and they should just not serve them at all. Most of them did not taste fresh and we ended up not even wanting to take the left over to go. It's that bad... Tianjin pork bun - the worst. No flavor. It did not taste fresh and skin is chewy and separation from the meat. Potstickers - no flavor at all and we had to add lots of sauces to it. Skin was not mostly fried and crunchy like it should be. shanghai soup dumplings - dry and no soup inside. Onion panake with egg - no flavor. I can cook it from the ingredients at grocery store better than them... Overall I will not visit this store again and will not recommend people to come unless you want to donate your money for a bad experience.
The only reason that this restaurant is receiving 2 stars from me is because the hot sauce is amazing. I only come here for the hot sauce. Unfortunately you can't just have that by itself. Food quality here took a major downfall. I previously recommended this place to so many of my friends. We all agreed that we love this place for the hot sauce, not so much the dumpling. Previously I have ordered via Yelp for delivery, and when I got my dumplings I noticed I kept finding strands of aluminum in each dumpling! This is extremely dangerous and I don't understand how the employees could have made this type of issue. Another time, my friend ordered for me via Yelp for delivery again. Each dumpling that we had contained this weird material almost like a foam used for cushions. Whatever it was, it was not edible. Again, how does this type of issue occur?
I always enjoy these little mom and pop shops because the food is always adequate and never too expensive. I came here with few friends and they did most of the order but I want to say we got the pork with green chives dumplings and shrimp with chives dumplings along with the soup dumplings. The soup dumpling game was on point but one thing they neglected to give us with the ginger and we had to ask them for it. The pork and shrimp dumplings were delicious although I do feel like the casing for the dumplings was thick for my taste but the filling was great. Would definitely come back again if I was in the area. Service: It was okay, I honestly have low standards for service at any Asian establishments. Parking: Small lot but I don't see it being a problem to get a spot at anytime of the day.
Always love these hidden gems. Came here on a Saturday night and was a little bit surprised to see that there wasn't a ton of people. There was only one waiter but she was so hands on with everyone, no wait time at all. Also she was so great, always checking back on us and recommending other dishes. For two people we ordered: 1. Three Flavor Dumpling - Lots of rich soup broth in the dumplings which was a pleasant surprise. However couldn't really taste the difference between the three flavors so maybe just stick to buying one type instead or focus on figuring it out? 2. Crispy Lotus Root - I love this dish! They put a lot of sesame oil which can be an acquired taste. Super crispy and not crumbly at all, could've ate the entire thing myself haha. 3. Xiao Long Bao - Felt like the dumplings were better. Pretty average XLB, but I liked the amount of broth there was in each one. Could skip it. Overall pretty good experience. Would get the dumplings and the lotus root. Also amazing customer service!
This tiny hole in the wall has some legit dumplings & portions are great for a pretty cheap price. Soup dumplings were my favorite, the broth & flavor mashed me wasn't to bring other people there. Service is great & quick. Almost every dish there is less than $9. I enjoyed it there so much, I purchased a bag of frozen dumplings as well which is perfect bc its hard to cook a full meal with a new born.
Good hole in the wall restaurant serving authentic and delicious Chinese food without charging their customers arms and legs. We ordered: - three flavor dumplings - boiled, not steamed, dumplings filled with pork, shrimp and chives. Delicious. - Shanghai Soup Dumplings or juicy dumplings or Xiao Long Bao - steamed, and plenty of soup inside which is tricky to pull off. Good. Some places serve this dish with too strong of ginger flavor on the filling but this place does it just right. - beef chow mien - just ok. Tastes a little bland. - string beans with tofu - super delicious and fresh. The string beans are cooked yet retain their crunch. Highly recommended. - shrimp fried rice - the best! I love Chinese fried rice that is cooked right and you can taste the slight char flavor from the cook's skilled wok work. The only other times I had the pleasure of experiencing this flavor were when I was in Asia.
Great comfort food and service - thank you! Stopped by on foot from my local airbnb on a Sunday @ 3pm. Friendly, local atmosphere - waitress greeted others by name and a familiar smile. Place is clean and bright, small but relaxed. I ordered the tomato egg, shanghai-style soup dumplings, and tianjin special dessert. Tomato egg I haven't had in a long time, and thoroughly enjoyed - slightly sweet and salty, sauced but not watery. So good! And the dessert was so good! Really enjoyed it. Oddly, dumplings were also good (and clearly home-made), but didn't shine for me as brightly as the others. Service was great - even took the time to explain exactly what the dessert was (without me asking), to make sure I understood exactly what I would be getting. Service was attentive while giving me privacy to enjoy and tend to my things. Will definitely recommend to friends, and will be back!
