Do you have chop Suey?
A:
Chop Suey is not a real or authentic Chines Dish. It was something that was created back in the early days by a clever Chinese restaurant owner that felt it would appeal to the Western Palate. It was also very inexpensive to make and serve to… more

Love this place! Shouldn't matter in rating, but I'll start by saying the service was great and everyone was lovely.
Food was so good. Favorite dishes are the pea shoots with garlic and the eggplant. Also got the sesame chicken and duck, both good but not as much as the eggplant.
They have beer but not a full bar. However, I'll be back soon to try more things on the menu.wish I had tried this place sooner!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 13, 2023
We've usually get to go from HK BBQ, and mainly just the mapo tofu. That's always been my go to at HK BBQ, but never actually order other things or ate inside the restaurant before.
The parking is okay, not the best, but at least they have a private lot. There are other business specific spots, so you might have to park further if it's packed. The restaurant itself is pretty small. We came at 6pm on a Saturday and had to wait a bit.
Anyways on to the food! I think after my dinner here, Hong Kong BBQ is now my fav Chinese spot in Castro Valley. It's a really homey, authentic Chinese restaurant.
The prawns with scrambled eggs was the star dish of the night. It was sooo silky smooth! The gravy was flavored well, prawns were good sized and cooked correctly, and the chow fun was fresh and chewy!
The Yin Yang fried rice was really good as well. I just like the fact that I basically get 2 fried rice for the price of one! The two sauces tasted great and really complemented the fried rice.
The Westlake soup was good as well. One order was enough to feed 4 people plus seconds!
The salt and pepper wings were meh. Decent crisp to them, but flavors didn't stick. Opposite was the sesame chicken. That was over sauced. The sauced really look over and I wasn't truly able to enjoy the chicken.
HK BBQ is pricier than some other Chinese restaurants. However, you get what you pay for. The quality is most defiantly there. I'll most definitely be back to get the scrambled egg shrimp chow fun and test out other things on their menu!Helpful 1Thanks 3Love this 1Oh no 0 - Molly G.Canada461611Dec 9, 2023
After working I was craving my favorite noodle dish. It's the ha fun noodles covered with shrimp and silky eggs. It's one of my all time favorites. This dish will not disappoint you.
Then I ordered the roast duck with rice. It also comes with a bed of vegetables. The roast duck was tasty and there was plenty of delicious meat. Please also ask them for the roast duck sauce. Pour it over your duck or dip it with your roast duck. Ummm umm good.
If you haven't tried their roast duck. You need to , It's a treat. I went home with a happy belly.

We live further away now, so it is farther for us, but after a pickup at the Oakland Airport, we swung in on a Wednesday night around 7:45 PM or so and there were a few others in the restaurant. We over-ordered (per usual) and although the prices are a bit high, the portions are still huge! We went with the Singapore-style Rice Noodles (my fav), the shrimp and scrambled egg chow fun, a half order of roast duck, and an order of cashew chicken. All were great! Noticed tht the staff tries to have their meal around 8 PM.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jul 30, 2023Previous reviewPrices keep going up but the food is still super strong. We went with beef with black bean sauce chow fun and eggplant with spicy sauce over rice. Super large portions and hard to beat the taste. You can spend less elsewhere, but hard to beat the taste. The chow fun had the right wok hei flavor to it.
May 10, 2021Previous reviewA little ways from our house, but the Cantonese food here is consistently good. Online ordering is pretty easy and they never mess up an order. We ordered a ton of food this time - Singapore-style noodles, beef chow fun, orange spare ribs, pork with eggplant, roast duck, and spinach with garlic. The sleeper dish is the orange spare ribs. Not over the top sweet and not coated in a thick batter, the spare ribs are fantastic. Just the right orange flavoring (with actual oranges). The Singapore-style noodles is my definite go-to dish.
Dec 26, 2018Previous reviewReal roast duck, roast pork and chow fun and chow mein in Castro Valley. Hard to believe, but this is the real deal. It is a pretty small place and they do a booming to-go business. Rice plates and noodle dishes are the top orders here, with lots of roast duck hitting the tables. The servers are constantly running - no hanging out and talking. Our go to is the roast duck (whole order), roast pork, Singapore style rice noodles, chow fun with shrimp and scrambled eggs, and the orange-flavored pork spareribs (a less sticky and more fragrant version of Peking-style spare ribs). Rice plates are awesome as well. Yes, this place is worth the drive.

Outstanding service, deliciously fresh food and peaceful atmosphere.
Pea sprouts with garlic, Peking style spareribs, Cl shoot with chicken, salted fish and tofu and Westlake beef soup.
Hands down tastier than Oakland Chinatown, clean, friendly staff and conveniently located.
Thank you for a fantastic meal that helped nourish us after a hectic day.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jennie D.San Francisco, CA331850Jan 28, 2024
This place just has great flavor of food. Our go to is always the salted fish/chicken fried rice; salt & pepper pork chops, deep fried flounder, pea sprouts, shrimp with walnuts. Everything is good here. Food comes out pretty fast too. The ladies there work really hard.

Food is great! It became our fav late lunch restaurant now! We come almost everyday after work and it's good that they still open after 3pm.
Can't complain the service either, they always greet us with big smile and prepare everything for you!
The place is clean and I enjoyed the music! Plus it feel so good to sit down inside while outside is really hot..

I looked through food pictures and this place looked good. I went to the restaurant to pick up my order, after walking in there the staff walked past me for five minutes before finally being asked if I needed anything. I ordered the Salt & Pepper pork chops and some spring rolls.
The pork chops were a 50/50 mixture of meat and fat. I love pork chops but these had way too much fat on them.
The spring rolls were over cooked and burnt.
I won't be returning here Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 233156551Jan 15, 2023
This place gives huge portions and is good for sharing family style. They're open on holidays so we got take out from here on Christmas Day. The only downside is that they are not on any delivery platform so it's either dine in or pickup only.
Roast duck - 8/10 very fatty, flavorful duck offered in whole or half orders along with rice plate options.
House special chow mein - 7/10 they charge $1 extra if you ask for it to be crispy, the last time we ordered it was lacking sauce
Kung pao chicken - 8/10 loaded with peanuts, water chestnuts and onions, huge portion but could be more spicy
Black mushroom chicken - 7/10 regularly order this, but it's more bok choy than mushroom or chicken my biggest complaint is that they overfill the box and even though they put it in a bag it spills all over the place.
Salt and pepper pork chop - 9/10 super tasty, crispy fried pork but it does come with jalapeños if you don't like spice.
Honey walnut shrimp - 10/10 plump shrimp and comes with a lot for and entree, with candied walnut shrimp.
Taro sago - 7/10 they were out of mango sago so I opted for taro sago which was mostly coconut milk with 1/4 sago and very little taro. I still enjoyed it but probably not worth the price.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Gavin M.Phoenix, AZ02Jan 19, 2024
TL;DR They serve decent BBQ and mediocre everything else at horrible prices.
BBQ is their specialty, and the BBQ duck did not disappoint. But the yuxiang eggplant was drenched in hoisin and very bland, and the HK style chow mein had huge unsteamed pieces of bok choy that were a pain to chew.
The atmosphere is your average casual sit down chinese fare. While we were eating, one of the employees was making dumplings on the next table with a large batch of unrefrigerated ground meat... kind of suspicious healthwise, but the wontons tasted fine.
Overall, HK BBQ serves pretty average cantonese food, except for the specialty BBQ meat, and it's way overpriced. They even charge for white rice by the cup.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
