About the Business
Big chain gyms can often feel like meat markets, but we're different. We cherish our relaxed, community feel that brings the neighborhood together to get healthy. Locally-owned in Portland, Oregon since 1983, Hollywood Fitness is open 24/7 to anyone who wants to get in shape. Our friendly gym combines the amenities and equipment you expect from a large gym with a local barbershop's atmosphere. We offer our members ActivTrax, a web-based technology that creates a custom workout that you can perform using the equipment available at Hollywood Fitness. It's like having a robot for a personal trainer! But don't worry...human trainers, including owner George Comalli, are always around to help whenever needed. Another powerful tool Hollywood Fitness has to help our members reach their wellness goals is PDX90, a revolutionary program offered exclusively in our neighborhood gym that provides real results in just 90 days, guaranteed.

What I love about Hollywood fitness is that they have a great selection of machines and an atmosphere of fitness. The staff is super helpful as they orient people to the facilities and they're friendly even at 6am.
I also really value that they aren't trying to sell you a million things like other gyms. They have fitness training, they have classes, and there is advertising for those things, but no one is badgering me weekly about this new thing or that new thing or training or anything. After nearly 2 years of membership, it's still refreshing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 1, 2023
large space, lots of equipment, helpful staff/trainers, great pricing. definitely not the newest equipment or fanciest space, but it's a great option for lower budget and few bells/whistles needed.
24/hr access and staffing means we can go anytime that works for us and still feel safe.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Trong N.Southwest Portland, Portland, OR051Mar 8, 2024
Very inconvenient location, customer service was beyond horrible, and there was many weird smells inside. Tried doing their free day trial and was turned away so a huge waste of my time. I would stay away as there are far better options nearby. The guy helping me was extremely rude.

Marshall is wonderful! I did a fitness assessment with him and reaching my goals felt so obtainable. Kind people are the best :)

Super friendly staff. I joined today after leaving a more corporate place and am glad i made that decision. Very nice facility and it has a laid back vibe but not at the expense of professionalism. I think that's pretty cool.

Updating my previous 5-star review since I'm no longer a member and so many things have changed. I left the gym early last year as the pandemic began and spread -- not because of any problem with the gym or its personnel but because of the virus. I emailed George and had no problem with further bills or cancellation.
My experience with George and the gym's trainers was always positive. I wish them the very best as they and their continuing members move forward.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Tony is one of many great neighborhood members that make working at the club a pleasure.
Jan 4, 2019Previous reviewFriendly neighborhood gym for people of all ages, with a wide selection of machines, free weights, and classes. I've been a member for the past five years and have recommended Hollywood Fitness (formerly Giants Gym) to several friends. Affordable rates ($29 to start and then $19 a month). Open 24/7.
There's nothing too fancy about Hollywood Fitness. This isn't a big box gym. Hollywood Fitness is well equipped with nearly everything you could want for a good workout. The machines are reasonably clean and well maintained. The clientele is polite. George, the owner, is helpful and friendly. He'll introduce you to Buddy, his monk parakeet, who sometimes he lets walk around the counter. All in all the gym is a pretty ideal place.
Hollywood Fitness shares a gravel parking lot with Sheridan's Sports Bar and the Rose City Food Park, which is just next door. An added convenience, if not an outright temptation, to do your workout and then grab a bite from one of the park's many food carts. - Oct 4, 2019
I've been in and out of gyms for a good chunk of my life starting at 13 years old. When one is 4' 10" heading into high school, one learns fast that the gym can be your best friend. As, I slightly got taller (not much ) I still stuck to the gym and until the age of 30 stuck to musclehead type gyms. Yeah, there were the "steroid" types in many of them but I never chose to go that route.
I've been up here for almost six years now but I also had been out of a gym setting for the better part of 18 years. Scary, but for the past three and change I've biked all over town, so I wasn't starting from nothing. I have tried out the "meat market" gyms (LA Fitness, 24Hr, etc.) and I've never gotten a good workout at places like that. Pretty people are more interested in conversation and spandex that actually working out. I like a simple, no-frills gym with all the good weights, cardio equipment and usually not much more. Hollywood Fitness is that spot.
I had checked it out a couple years ago but for whatever reason, I didn't join at the time. Well another birthday passed and I decided to finally get my ass into the place and I've happy ever since.
I have been there a little over a month and going at least three days a week and the atmosphere is great, the staff is excellent and friendly and so are several of the other customers that I've come in contact with. Through my company, I got a discount and ended up with their better membership but at a lower price, so depending on where you work, ask, you may save some $$$.
They also have a shake bar and vending machine with the healthy options one needs to keep motivated before or after your workout.
I like the gym and if this is what you need and for little money with no hidden crap, then make your way up to Hollywood. Well worth it.
Enjoy.Helpful 12Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Mike V.Los Angeles, CA30394Mar 9, 2021
The dream of the '90s is alive in Portland at this gym and not in a fun ironic way, but in that typical tacky gym with a silly contract way.
COST:
$19 a month? Not really. With the reoccurring annual "Joining Fee" it's $21.42/mo. Not a big difference, but tacky. (I'm just glad they still have a sign outside boasting the $19 with no *asterisk or disclaimer.)
FACILITES:
Horrible layout, making it impossible to get weights when someone is nearby. Too small of space for the older weight machines they have, many of which are rarely used. It never felt that clean, not horrible, but not great, that is, until you get on a stair machine from the late 90's and you see the insane dust and debris on the HVAC and in the rafters. Men's bathroom is gross.
The best part:
During 2020 the were ONLY OPEN for 5 MONTHS (covid obvi), but guess what, they charged my account for 10 months. Took money, and yes, even the Annual Joining Fee for months they were not allowed to be open.
I think this behavior tells you everything you need to know.
And yes, I can confirm that cancelling is a tedious process that will have you calling your bank to block them from withdrawing funds you didn't approve. Instead of doing the right thing and just canceling your account, the reps just argue the points of the contract and do not work toward a fair resolution. FYI, I cancelled on March 8th and they're keeping my full March payment withdrew on March 4, AND they're charging my card on April 4 for the full $19 because of their required 30 day cancellation notice. Beyond tacky. I guess they don't teach the word "prorated" at this place.
Make sure you read the attached contract closely and notice that it's FULL of bullsh!t fees and terms that wouldn't likely hold up in small claims court.
When you cancel, you'll be forced to call and write the national billing company they use (ABC Financial) where the phone tree has this incredible "Oh, poor us and how bad our industry was hit during Covid" message. First time I've encountered a narcissistic phone menu.
While I'll miss being able to walk to this meh gym and lift weights heavier than I care to purchase for my home, I don't think I'll miss the tacky prize marketing scheme they did for while, or the smoothie bar that's actually not at the gym but always closed in the food cart lot next door, or the extra cost for classes, or the used car salesman feel.
.....and gyms wonder why we're all working out at home now. Duh.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Loren P.Northeast Portland, Portland, OR04Mar 27, 2023
I called this gym to confirm their free trial day policy, and showed up the next day to do it. when I got up to talk to the counter guy, he stared at me without saying anything twice when I asked about the free trial day. when I said "you do that, right? you're looking at me like I'm an idiot" he said, "I don't know, are you an idiot?" when I then asked "what the f*, should I leave?" he said yes. I don't understand what his problem was, could have been my wearing a mask or being visibly queer.
