Wow!

Had a 4 hour layover at Newark, and wanted to get out of the airport.  Jumped in a cab and came here, and it was absolutely worth the journey.

Bread was great- had the spicy Italian.

Owner was there and was super friendly and gave great service.

Just a note- limited seating if you're like me and coming with a family from the airport.

But overall, outstanding sandwich and the prices can't be beat!

This review is based on my first experience here . I was over at the Hilton for a seminar and needed a close place to grab lunch . I spotted this place on Yelp ( obviously ) and saw all the great reviews so we decided to give it a try. When we got there, there was a line of about 15 people ranging from construction workers to guys in shirts and ties ; always a good sign.

So here is why I gave 5 stars. 1) I love a good divey place with unexpected good quality food 2) although there was a line, they were so on top of everything . The second you walked in the door they were yelling out loud to you, seeing if you were ready to order. It was like a pleasant assembly line . The staff was super nice and within 8 mins with 15 people on line , I had a sandwich in my hand . 3) the sandwich was fantastic . I didn't take any pictures bc I forgot to while I was stuffing my face with all that deliciousness.

Check them out when you're in the Newark Penn Station area.

Always consistent in serving a delicious sandwich. My favorite is the Belly Buster with everything on it including mayo. I always call early in the morning for pick up in the afternoon.

YUM. I love deli sandwiches but they have to taste just right. We walked in minutes before they closed. They had only round rolls and whole wheat bread left but I happen to love round rolls. My bf tried to order a sandwich which they didn't have the meats left for.... I can tell this is a popular place. Service was friendly. The ingredients are some of the freshest I have ever tasted. As soon as I took a bite of my sandwich I was Happy!!!

Huge shout out to Hero King (especially Tony!). I had clients in from out of town and needed a place to grab some quick lunch to go and have it ready upon picking them up from the Newark Airport to eat in our limo bus (long story). Being that I was also in from out of town as well (I live in SF) we had to turn to Yelp. Hero King was right on the way and had great reviews (and pictures!) so we gave it a shot. It was a fairly detailed order of 8 sandwiches/wraps called in the day before and not only were they ready to go right on time, but everybody LOVED IT! The bread was delicious and fresh and the meat and toppings were all super flavorful. Will definitely recommend this place to everybody and if I'm ever in the area I'll definitely stop in!

Do you love a good old fashion New York deli sandwich?! So do I! This spot is it! Although the prices can stir a little closely to the pricey side it is worth it! The quality of the meats and cheeses are great and the bread is super fresh. The whole size is enough for two people or you can save the other half for later. The delivery time does take a while but trust me it's worth the wait!

Update June 1st-
This place continues to blow me away! I wish i could give it more stars! Today I got the Hoboken only available Wednesday and Saturday and it blew me away.  The staff is also fantastic.  As long as it is not raining or 100 degrees, this is with out a doubt my new go to lunch stop in Newark.

Best hero sandwich I've ever had. All of the freshest ingredients money can buy.

I had a turkey with provolone, hubs had a #3 with boiled ham, salami, (drawing a blank on the 3rd meat) and provolone. Both of us inhaled the entire sandwich.

For first timers (and first timers of jersey hero subs), get the half sandwich if you're flying solo on your sammich mission. The whole can feed 2-3 people easily.

Staff was super friendly, helpful (parking mishap for us out of towners) and welcoming.

I teased the staff that I'd consider making the trip from San Diego to Newark just to get this sandwich... I was only half way kidding :-)

They're good based on the competition in the area. But I wouldn't come traveling to grab a sandwich here. The bread could be better. After all, it's all about the bread!

Always fresh and delicious deli meats. They'll make your sandwiches whichever way you'd like them. Great friendly service. Perfect spot for a quick lunch pick-up in this area. Can't beat their prices either!

When it comes to cold cut sandwiches, Hero King is in a league of it's own. No one else in Newark even comes close.

Forget Subway. Forget Blimpie. Forget your local deli. This is where you need to eat to see where all other sandwiches will be measured against for the rest of your life. I've been coming here for years and, even though some of the faces have changed and the interior was redesigned, one thing has stayed the same. The size and quality of anything on their menu.

Seriously though, unless you're a competitive eater or a gastro-masochist, beware of getting the footlongs. They are gut-busting. The best part about this place is that you get a huge bang for your buck and the staff are really friendly.

Overall, there's not much else to say. This establishment is very deserving of its name. A true King amongst jesters with delusions of grandeur.

I wanted to give this a 5* before I even had the sandwich because of how fantastic the customer service was. The guys at Hero King not only filled my belly with a delicious sandwich, but they also made my day :)

Top notch.  The owner works the counter and was super friendly.  He comped my soda and on my way out gave me some free sausage and peppers.  The sub was great. This place was the place was the perfect start to a NJ trip.

Nothing extravagant, but basic and done well. Not really a sit down restaurant, but it has a few stools. Staff is super nice and talkative. Subs are a basic setup, but fresh. Not a ton of toppings, but the meat is really good.

All in all, a great spot for a sandwhich to go.

Great sandwiches and friendly staff. They're quick which is great. Meats and cheeses are cut fresh when the order is placed. Bread is fresh baked. One of the best sub shops in Newark.

The place could be 4 stars but I went wanting to eat my sandwich there but it was 40° outside and they had the doors open they need to use a better quality mayonnaise and if they going to unplug the refrigerator please offer a cup of ice for the soda.

Ordered these sandwiches for a Super Bowl party.  BLOWN AWAY by the freshness and taste of these subs!  Can't wait to go back!!

Quick, filling, cheap, tasty.
Are those the ideal things for a sandwich shop. Yea i know they are thats why this bad boy gets a 5 star bruvaman.

4 Sandwiches (1 hot) were made in all of 6 minutes freshly cut everything including deli meats, chicken, and all the additional toppings.

We all got foot long sandwiches (called "half" size) and they all had enough meat where it was filling but not too much meat where it was no longer a desirable sandwich. We got a #1 a #4 a chicken club, and a belly buster. All the sanwiches were made to perfection.

This place is a perfect stop for a pick up lunch.

There is a small counter that could probably fit 3 or 4 people but most people were taking orders to go.
