Both my kids learned to surf with HB Surf School. The instructors are amazing and they are still surfing weekly with Bill 4 years later. Awesome!

Took my husband as an anniversary present about two years ago for us to both get lessons. The instructor was very patient and helpful. However, the area has allot of stingrays. My husband fell when trying to get up (in the shallow surf) and was stung. So the lesson ended early. No refund at all - but we also didn't ask. I don't blame them at all. Just be aware of the sting rays. Also, if you don't have good ab muscles, don't assume you will stand up on the board during the lesson - it's tough!
I did not like their first-aid. The instructor did not wear gloves. The bucket used to treat the stingray wound was not sanitized in a way I would have preferred.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sandy V.Garden Grove, CA04Nov 24, 2018
Signed my daughter up through the city, paid and registered, went for the first lesson in which we even got there early. She was super excited and nervous as well. The guy shows up and let us know that he cancelled the lessons since there weren't 4 kids signed up and just my daughter. No email or anything letting us know that it was cancelled or even what the options were from there. It was like pulling teeth to find out information on what to do. I can't say anything about the actual surf lessons, but this guy's business ethics/ demeanor were horrible. Not friendly or helpful at all which left my 13 yr old feeling a little deflated after we left. Now it will take 3-4 weeks to get a refund from the city which stinks, but I would never go back again. We will be trying another surf school nearby.

HB Surf School was recommended to us by long time HB residents. As others have stated, Bill does an amazing job and is both encouraging and patient.
Because the weather has been unpredictable and the shore line has changed from the passing storms Bill was very aware of the changing surf conditions and which days and times would work the best for a beginning surfer. He didn't just fill his schedule. He watched the surf and called us in when the surf was best for our 9 year old daughter who had taken a lesson from him a year ago when we were passing through HB. We can't recommend Bill Sharp enough, worth every penny!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tara H.Jacksonville, OR1082Apr 1, 2018
While hanging out on the beach we saw an instructor with students out in the water. I realized it was a surf lesson and went to HB Surf School and had the best experience for my 14 yr old and 11 year old. The instructor was super helpful and kind. She took great care of them and gave them hands on instruction and by the end of the class they were standing on their boards. They were so tired after an hour and a half! She offered them a granola bar, water and gave them a t-shirt. Our family has never surfed and now we are looking into other surf schools that are near our area in Oregon. I highly recommend their services. The owner was also super kind and thankful for our business!

I am surprised no one has reviewed this school yet. It is a small mom-and-pop shop. They are located right on the beach. Bill the owner doesn't amazing job. Our first lesson which lasted around an hour and a half or two he had both me and my 15-year-old daughter standing on our boards surfing in the Whitewater. He is very patient and fun to work with. He is a retired pro surfer who coaches the local high school surf teams, so is capable of teaching beginners like us or a seasoned pro. The equipment was all in great condition and there were no extra charges for frills such as sunscreen or photography. An A+ experience for a potentially frustrating scenario
