This gem of a restaurant deserves a standing ovation. A literal orchestra of a team, the customer service and hospitality goes beyond expectations. Our server was amazing, super friendly and did a wonderful job with explaining our questions regarding the menu. My bf ordered the Monte Cristo- a whole sandwich filled with turkey and ham, smacked dabbed in between three thick slices of Texas French toast and melted Swiss cheese, dusted with powdered sugar, served alongside a bowl of fruit with a cup of maple syrup to slather over this unique breakfast creation. Biting into this will change your life, because you haven't had anything like this before. If you're feeling ballsy and want to shake up your emotions, order the Monte Cristo. Never have I encountered anything like this in my history of breakfast/brunch menus.
I ordered the New York steak and eggs for my meal, steak cooked medium, over-easy eggs with a side of hash browns and sourdough toast. What lw shocked me was the option to have a pancake in place of the sourdough. Like this is unheard of, lol. Anyway, I noticed these folks butter your toast for you! AMAZING! I'm telling you, I went for the toast first. Once our server set the plate in front of me, I picked up that slice of sourdough and bit into that bad boy, and WOOH!- thee P E R F E C T amount of crunch. I knew at that moment, I needed to write this review. The hash browns also were cooked at the perfect temperature, because the crunch on this was beyond as well. All the while, our server was checking in to see if everything was great and/or if we needed more coffee.
Amazing experience and will definitely be returning to Gunter's again soon! lolHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jim D.San Francisco, CA1136425Nov 26, 2023Updated review
There are two types of places: Quality businesses like Gunter's that use Heinz, and places that try to scam you by refilling the Heinz bottle w value brand.
All the food is great and I ADORE the staff!!!!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0May 30, 2021Previous reviewThis is one of my favorite breakfast spots!! The food is pretty good BUT average family restaurant faire. The employees are what makes excellent!! Super welcoming an attentive. They really value their customers and it shows!!!
Feb 3, 2020Previous reviewFor good diner breakfast, I LOVE to come to this place! I have been there 4 times now, with two consecutive Sundays. The breakfast selection is good, and most of the time the service is great! The one thing that I am VERY judgey about is the catchup. THEY USE REAL HEINZ HERE!! The cardinal sin, to me, is when people reuse Heinz ketchup bottles and refill them with America's Best or some other garbage, like they gonna fool us with generic stuff. There has been a bootle of REAL Heinz every time I have gone, and I think they're new every Sunday.

Food was pretty good but not sure if I would say it was worth $17 or so good. Service was also pretty good. The server allowed me to swap my toast for 1 pancake. Restaurant had a good amount of patrons. A lot of locals that I would guess are regulars since no one greeted us as we walked in and we didn't what to do until a regular walking out told us to seat ourselves.

The best breakfast I've had in a while. Yes it's one of dingy, greasy spoon kind of place, but that's why it's so good. Great service, small crowd, great food. I had the chicken fried steak, scrambled eggs, and hashbrowns with sourdough toast. Steak came smothered with sausage gravy, the hash browns cooked to perfection and the toast had a generous amount of butter. Highly recommend!

Food is large portions, family style restaurant, catering to the local community in South San Francisco

If you want a quality diner meal then Gunters is the place! Love coming here on an early morning with my girlfriend. I absolutely love their breakfast items especially their Mexican breakfast. So much food but so good and the pricing is great as well. Very good service and very friendly making you feel welcomed. The ambiance of the restaurant is very homey meaning everyone is usually there with there family or friends and just enjoying the food.

Great local establishment who has always been consistent for me. The service is always great and the food is even better. The place is clean but is an old diner with charm so do t expect to be wowed. Parking is not a problem. I recommend the turkey avocado sourdough sando.

I was surprised the salad was huge enough for two people but I ate it all. It came with salad dressing on the side, along with garlic toast. The service was extremely friendly. We loved the decor it was like being an old-time drive-in diner. Best of all you get a large portion of food and the price is very reasonable.

Not a very clean place to eat. Food was a bit too salty especially if you order the real corned beef for their hash breakfast. It was just chunks of beef and not hash which usually has onions, potatoes, bell peppers, etc. and maybe an egg.
Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jun 23, 2023Previous reviewI'm not sure why all the top reviews by others. It seems to be frequented by regulars but the place is in dire need of a remodel because the carpet is dirty, the ceiling is leaking, when you walk to the bathroom and pass by a work room, it looks unkempt. Makes me wonder what the kitchen where the food is made, looks like.
Hubby found this place to try for breakfast as JoAnn's which we used to like, changed owners and has declined in food and service. The waitress here was nice and friendly enough and it's a spacious restaurant. Hubby ordered the chicken fried steak which was crispy but he complained it was too salty which is something I tend to do.
I ordered the corned beef hash but for $1 extra, you can get real corned beef instead of the canned stuff. It arrived with the 2 eggs, sort of crispy but soggy inside hash browns which wasn't extra crispy (what I asked for) and chunks of beef. Not corned beef hash, just very salty corned beef chunks. It was disappointing. The serving size is generous which is probably why some regulars like to dine here.
I ended up taking the leftover potatoes, eggs and chunky beef home and had to repurpose it and made a real corned beef hash, adding onions. Not going to let Hubby pick a breakfast plac
