Quaint little place. It's def a Time Capsule. A lot of memorabilia. It's your usual neighborhoods greasy spoons (in a good way). Coffee is strong. Had Judith skillet. Potato is cooked perfectly! A little Al denté and crispy around. Veggie omelet - cheese inside oozed out and crisping out the edges. The toast can be less soggie. But who eats toast anyway

This spot has a cool ambience and it features retro decor, and has a cozy feel to it but the food was not good. The service was really bad, and the food we ordered overall was not good. That is probably on us too, I ordered a trout salad without ever trying trout before and I didn't like the Trout at all. The person I was with ordered pan crusted fish, and it tasted like it had just been frozen and thawed. Would not go back

Take a walk through the door and take a walk back in time. Album covers adorn the walls and ceilings. We had a bit of a wait for a table on a beautiful September evening. But once seated we're promptly seated and received our food in a decent timeframe. We were a party of 5. The fried chicken is outstanding . Several fish options, also great.

This business seems to be resting on location and forgoing service, especially on busy holiday weekends. My friend and I had decent food. Refills on beverages, even with the pitcher on the table, were slow. But the weird part was the witchy woman (owner?) who talked our ears off about some book she's in. She made me feel rather unwelcome. Cute decor, but there are better options

What a sweet small town spot to enjoy breakfast!
If you are passing through Bayfield, this spot has wonderful eggs Benedict, home fries, French toast, biscuits and old fashioned diner coffee.
enjoy this eclectic ambiance adorned with old Hollywood memorabilia when you pass through this great little town!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kerri W.WI, WI01Jul 3, 2023
If I could give this establishment less than 1 star I would. Horrendous! Granted, it was a holiday weekend but the service, cleanliness and overly operation was awful. After waiting in line 15 minutes to put our names on "the list" for a table, we were asked to wait on the patio and send in party of 4 for Amber when I went out there. What?!?! Things went downhill quickly after that...... We have been to there a few times prior and thought the food was decent enough that we wanted to take some family members. Bad mistake.
Waited a solid hour for our dinners and when they arrived........the hamburger that was supposed to be cooked medium had blood soaked into the bun. The fried fish sandwich was ice cold and the french fries had been under the heat lamp for a very long time. Soggy and nasty. Bathrooms had no paper towel and toilet paper all over the floor.
Don't ruin your vacation by expecting a good, even mediocre dining experience here. The hotdogs in my camper were a better option.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 27, 2022Updated review
Nice that this was open on Monday when we got here! Also nice there was a veggie burger option. We had a nice meal, super great service. The wait time was reasonable, food was fresh and hot and we were overall very satisfied

We had supper at Gruenkes, as we had already been there before and knew that the two of us who are vegetarians wanted to have the pasta parmesan. It was so so good. While the tomatoes were the pale variety from the grocery store, there was a nice amount of peppers, onion and mushrooms in the pasta along with a good red sauce and some parmesan. Add to that thick and tasty garlic bread and it was a wonderful meal. My non-vegetarian friend had the walnut crusted trout with the rice pilaf and a side salad. She said that it was very good, though the pilaf was a little bit bland.
It was a quiet night, so we got extremely attentive service. All in all it was not our first time there and it will not be the last. - Becca G.Minneapolis, MN533Sep 4, 2023
We had a fabulous experience at Gruenke's this weekend after biking on Madeline island. The atmosphere of the Inn is fantastic -such fun decor - its one of a kind! The food was awesome and wait staff so friendly and nice and quick. We had an amazing experience meeting the owner Judith - she let our boys use the juke box and 100 year old cash register. We ended the night getting vanilla malts across the way at the ice cream stand and sat at the picnic benches. It was very fun unforgettable experience for our family and I would very highly recommend it!

Bayfield, WI, is a picturesque town, located on the coast of Lake Superior . The Gruenk's First Street Inn was established around 150 years ago as a boarding house.
We came here for lunch and I think it became one of my favorite eating places of this road trip. There's something about walking into a place that has such a history. The decor is eclectic and haphazard. Photos of musicians, movie stars, newspaper articles are on the walls.
It was quite busy when we came for lunch. The waitress found us a nice table by a window. Husband ordered the locally caught whitefish with fries and slaw. He enjoyed this lunch choice very much. He only regrets not trying the whitefish livers. I thought a chicken salad sandwich and side of chili would satisfy me for the rest of our drive. The chili was very good and my sandwich was bigger than I expected. Due to the crowd, it took a little longer to get our food.
I would definitely return and maybe try to reserve one of the special rooms available at the Inn. It's a quick walk down to the marina to watch the boats.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0
