Groom is a barber shop, located in Center City, Philadelphia that combines classic techniques with modern style. Joe McMenamin, the owner and stylist, has established a setting that is quaint and comfortable. The decor, good conversation, and sweet background sounds from artists like Stan Getz and Django Reinhardt, are all part of what makes this as much about the experience as it does about the haircut.

Hey I have a fairly long beard (6 months) but it grew in a little uneven. can you do basic shape ups without seriously affecting length? i just want to avoid the clippers coming out and going to town?

      A:

Of course we can. Absolutely no problem. Just let the barber know what you’d like. We are all good listeners.

I have long pomadour like hair. Is there a specific barber/hairstylist who specializes in pomadour like haircuts that I can be referred to? I've had terrible experiences with going to new places so I just want to be safe. Thanks!

Ty is amazing! I got one of the best cuts in years here. The atmosphere was inviting. The free drinks were an added bonus. I had an appointment and was seen right away. They take walk ins to my knowledge.

The location is inside a large commercial building and you must get buzzed in, and head down a flight of stairs. Once inside the space its a breathe of fresh air. Music was perfect for what you would expect in a 1950's barber shop. I will be back again and ask for Ty as she was spectacular. FYI- my mens haircut was $28! Thats a steal.

Groom barbershop is the best! And so is BJ! She is so good at what she does and is just a really nice person. I've been a customer for probably close to five years now and have no plans of going anywhere else. They are also taking all the necessary precautions with limiting the number of people, wearing masks, and everything else. I always feel very safe there.

FYI - They are in the basement of the Arts Condominium. When you walk in, you dial them on the keypad and they'll buzz you in. Then you turn right to go down the stairs and the shop is just on your right.

Thank you Max. Very kind of you to take the time to do a review and I’m extra grateful for your directions to the shop...and yes BJ is a rock star. We love her.

Been going to groom for years - BJ is my new go to and she has been fantastic. Takes time with everything she does and I highly recommend her. With that said, I've had times I had to go to whoever was available because I didn't schedule ahead and they were also great cuts. You really can't go wrong. Highly recommend Groom.

I went to groom today. Im new in town and I went due to the reviews and also the proximity to where I was. Cool place, nice setup. I made a last minute appointment. They were able to accommodate me and set up an appointment withen the next 30 mins or so.
My barber was BJ (I believe that was her name). I don't get a complex cut. I didn't need to get the top cut, just cut the sides and blend it in with the top, thin it out if need be.

I will say that while I was there, the cut seemed fine. She combed and styled it after done. However when I came home and washed my hair, it was very uneven. The side burns were not blended in with the sides at all or with the top. Parts of the back seemed lumpy in areas. And when I style it and comb over, many of the hair are different lengths.

Go to Denim on South St. or the Blind Barber if you want something on Juniper, if you're near the square try the barbers in the racket club at least once. Philadelphia has many, many barber shops, all in the same price range and NONE are in a BASEMENT.

The place is not clean. This is an old building, dark colors everywhere, you feel you are breathing in little hair pieces from their last week's hair cuts.

I went here for years. Unfortunately, I recently learned this Barbershop is antimask and many of the barbers refuse to mask. This puts their disabled patrons and their vulnerable family members at risk.

When i asked joe to put on a mask he told me to sit down and shut up.

I'm disabled and they clearly don't care about me and they won't care about you either.

I wouldn't recommend going here for a haircut.

Joe always does a fantastic job and somehow I never come home with any stray hairs to wash off in the shower. Idk how he does it but I've never had a barber leave my head so clean. It's impressive.

No matter who cuts my hair there, I always seem to get a great cut. Even when I go 3-4 months between cuts and it's really not obvious what my hair used to look like at the last cut. And the price is very reasonable and the ambiance is cool.
