Our server, Pauline, was so sweet and attentive. The restaurant is located in cutest alley where you can the beautiful natural walls are exposed. The restaurant also has natural stone walls exposed. We ordered the mahi mahi sandwich and the chicken stew along with two drinks. Everything was delicious! We loved the ambiance and the service! They do not have bathrooms inside the restaurant but next door there is lovely bathroom. You pay $1.00 per person but the clean bathroom is worth it!
Very good food and good service. Homemade sauces were excellent but watch out for the hot sauce - yowza! Great spot, we will come again.
We visited on a Sunday when just about everything was closed and was starving we went down the cute an quaint alley ways where the shops are. We went in to this place.... they have brick walls.. you can tell this place is authentic location probably from the 1800s.. The service was good and we were seated immediately. I had the Caribbean lobster roll sandwich (which came with french fries or another side) special for $14. A++ ... oh it was very good. Waters were provided to all. I ordered coffee and it was very good and rich but not as rich as Starbucks. I loved it! My son had the Caesar salad with chicken. He wished there was more Parmesan cheese on his salad (but he didn't ask either). He stated it was very good. He stated his Pepsi was slightly watered down but hey its Pepsi.. you could of course order tropical drinks or other items but it was our shopping day. Wife was able to have a breakfast platter and she said it was good. She loved the bacon and even I sampled the home-fries.... yum.. very authentic. They had WiFi as well! Now the one little irritation is that if you have to use the bathroom you have to go outside of the establishment and pay $1 to use a very well maintained and clean bathroom. A solid 4.5 starts. We would go back if we were in the area. I would of liked to try the omelette.
Hidden away in one of the breezways (fancy word for alley) between the harbor and the main street, this place is a "find". Party of 4, the 3 ladies I was with had the Lobster salad on an Avacado. I had lobster salad on toast (sandwich). I split my sandwich with my wife for half her Avacado. I liked my sandwich better, although there were no complaints from anyone, but I'm not sharing my sandwich next time. It got quite crowded and at times there was a line to get in. Definately wait in the line. Look forward to coming back as we have friends that live on the island.
I recommend Gladys's to ALL of my guests! It's a one of a kind experience with not only GOOD food, but a wide variety on the menu. They seem to be open 7 days a week, which is hard to find downtown! If you want to experience historical design in downtown Charlotte Amalie, this is the place to go. So many photo ops of the original stone, shell and brick ballast from the 1700's.
We walked in sat down and I said to the waitress, I was told to come here for some real island food. I'm tired of Mahi Mahi and all the same ole tourist trap food. She says ok I'll surprise you with my favorite thing here. She made sure I had no dietary restrictions and preferences. I said I had none. We ordered our drinks, strawberry daiquiri and soursap colada. I still don't know what soursap is but it was very mellow mild kind of had a vanilla flavor but not intense at all. My wife is addicted to conch fritters which I was over by this time. But they were the best I had up to that point. My wife got the curry chicken which was all dark meat and our waitress surprised me with the jerk pork chops. Yes yes yes yessss! It was the most flavorful bite of food I had on the island. I def recommend it! So look this place is inside an alley. Very unsuspecting. You walk in and the restaurant has this amazing charm like you are eating in your own private restaurant set back a couple hundred years ago. And our waitress was super cool. Thanks for looking out for us. Eat here!
I got the opportunity to eat at Gladys' while in port on a cruise recently. We booked a foodie tour guide to take us through the island and introduce us to some of the best spots to eat and drink. We tasted conch fritters, kallaloo, and congee. Gladys served us and was the sweetest person I have ever met. You could taste the love she has for her cuisine in every bite. The restaurant was heavily damaged during the hurricanes a few years back, but the people of the island loved her so much they worked hard to bring it back better than it had previously been. It's tucked in a beautiful old alley way that is filled with instagrammable architecture.
The meal and service here was soo home-like. Came for lunch and we wanted some local flavor. The prices are pretty high (esp for lunch) but it's a touristic area so not sure if that could be changed. We were from a cruise ship so we didn't have the luxury to go further in our search. We were served by a no-nonsense type waitress :) I was happy with my tropical delight drink...it can be made with or without alcohol. I wish I had another one right now. It was soo good. A few of us ordered the curry goat and we all enjoyed it. They were out of oxtail and they did not have roti. The grilled jerk chicken was disappointing as we thought it would be chicken pieces but it was a flattened chicken breast. The conch fritters were good. I think I have had a variation of it years ago in Turks and Caicos. It wasn't soggy and had the right amount of sweet and savory. I didn't see a bunch of conch there but I think I was too busy enjoying the overall dish to care. But at $11 per plate, I think they can do better by adding more conch. On the table are 3 of the hottest sauces I have ever tasted at a meal table. Like super hot, taste the tiniest amount to see if you can handle it. I def wasn't ready
Lobster salad on a delicious avocado. My lunch mate had oxtails...both were perfect in their own way. The hot sauce actually tastes good and drew sweat, which is as it should be. I love these alleyways.
Lovely place to have a low-key quiet breakfast if you are in town. I had a simple egg sandwich with tomato and lettuce. Mom had hot oatmeal with bananas that she loved. I also had the local bananas, which are cute, small and way tastier than regular bananas. Coffee is great. Orange juice hit the spot. What really shines in this place is the service. Our waitress Pauline (I think that's her name) was sweet, polite and on point. She reminded me of my aunties, whom I love. The place is cute too. Stone walls. Air conditioned for those hot days. And the location on the Royal Dane can't be beat.
Huge portions! Really delicious. Atmosphere is very lovely. The air con was perfection. Bathrooms are outside for $1.
Came for the famous hot sauce stayed for the food! I had the lunch special curry chicken, comes with Fried plantain, rice and beans, and vegetables. Everything was so good, I tried the oil and vinegar hot sauce on my rice but I ended up purchasing the mango. Each bottle is $7.00 which isn't a bad price for the amount you're getting. I would recommend stopping by at least for a drink if you don't have time for a full meal.
The most enthusiastic waitress was Paulina, this lady was really accurate and nice about the service and the food, prices are good and portions are good enough even if you wanna share with your traveler partner. I'll definitely come back to this place. Note: if you go during Friday, Saturday or Sunday it's less crowded since there's no cruises on the island!
Their pina coladas are the best here. They make their drinks here with fresh fruit. Super good. I hadn't had one like this for ages. The seafood here on the other hand is so so. I ordered the fresh king fish. They had no problems in taking the food back. Definitely come here for the drinks.
Great spot for breakfast and assuming the rest of the day is just as good. I came in twice during my stay on the islands. The first time around was with my family and we all enjoyed ourselves with no complaints. I came back for an early breakfast on my own and the food was better than the first. I would usually like to try out a different place but it seemed nothing was open so early. I was actually the only customer around 7A.M. The prices are very reasonable. You can have your normal eggs, homefries, coffee for under 10 bucks but I would go with an option like I did the second time around... Salt fish, chop-chop (a mixture of spinach and okra) and butter bread. Fantastic breakfast that I would go for much more often if I had the right spot. Also, be sure to get the fruit bowl mix. It is as fresh as can be. Tastes like it was just plucked and they peel/slice right in front of you The staff are extremely friendly and will treat you like family. If I ever return to the islands I will be stopping in once again.
We stopped here to eat after our cruise ship pulled into port. We were hungry and looking for someplace to eat lunch. We were not disappointed. We all enjoyed our meals. Loved the artwork and brick walls. I would definitely come her again when I return to St. Thomas.
Gladys' Cafe is conveniently located near Main Street and shopping in St Thomas. I went for the Oxtails but since they'd sold out, I got the Curry Goat. It was pretty good; some more tender than other pieces. The portion was pretty good as well. I tried to try the oxtails three times but they were either out or didn't serve them on the day I was there. Therefore, I never got them. I guess that's an indication that they're good since they sell out so soon. My husband ordered the Caesar Salad. It was pretty good. We had about a 40 minute wait, for seating, due to ship traffic. The restaurant is not huge but accommodating. However, it's crowded when the ship crew comes to dine. I wanted to meet the name behind the restaurant but she was unfortunately too busy in the kitchen to come out.
Gladys' is that place that you really need to stop by while shopping downtown at Havensight Mall. It's tucked away in one of the skinny outdoor corridors. If you are looking for true West Indian or island cuisine, it's a great place. Hot "Gladys" sauce adorning every table, the menu has everything from salads to sandwiches as well as entrees of all types such as fresh fish either pan fried, grilled or in a curry - all with peas and rice or plantains. I would recommend getting a couple of things and sharing them, perhaps some jerk chicken and grilled mahi mahi and you can wash it all down with some painkillers!
One word...FANTASTIC! While vacationing in St. Thomas we asked for the best local restaurant and were told by 3 people to try Gladys's Cafe. We were treated and seated. Our waitress (Gladys's niece) was very nice. Food was brought out in a very timely manner. The conch soup was delicious, the curry chicken was tasty, and we were basically licking our fingers when we were finished just to savor the last bit of food. Owner and her sister were very nice and we thoroughly enjoyed ourself. You wont be disappointed!
This place is alright just like 90% of the restaurants on this island. The service was super slow we ended up spending around 2 hours here. My jerk pork chops was the best dish out of everything we ordered. All the fish dishes were mushy and bland. Their ginger beer and virgin papaya colada was yummy too.
