Quirky cool small spot to have delicious cocktails and moonshine tasting. They have a mocktail menu - I had Lemonade with added Blood Orange Soad, which was delicious and refreshing.
The tasting room is cozy with unique pottery for sale as well. The servers were welcoming, cool, and helpful with the mocktail menu.

      Wow,
It's amazing the flavor you can get out of a thimble full of spirit, or two ( i didn't want to risk accidentally going over the extra 5 mile speed limit, wizzing down 221 toward 17, on my way to Black Mountain N. C and being stopped by the local law enforcement...

Gabriel the totally chill and most friendly mixologist gave that excellent suggestion for my next stop.

This small distillery puts some big flavors in their moonshine; elderberry, vanilla plum, sweet mountain, lemon ginseng (my favorite I bought two bottles).

The last time I drank corn whiskey both the white and yellow I used some of it to clean some of my paint brushes since I was blinded by the light, the white lightning that is).

This much more flavorful potion leaves you with a fond memory not a jagged nightmare.

On the way out of Floyd it it is was easy to miss the steep hill that you travel up to get to this hidden gem, look sharp, its real close to the town border.

After your visit, hop back in the car and drive about 1000 feet down Route 221 and stop at the Willdwood General Store, and if your lucky enough to be passing through on a Sunday (another story) your in for a real treat.

Great spot to spend the afternoon.
They have a cosy patio where you can enjoy local spirits. The flights offer a nice glimpse into their product selection. I am glad that we came on a full stomach though...those spirits pack a big punch (some are 55ABV)!

I met a friend in Floyd for some shopping, and we came across Five Mile and decided to try it out. We had a great time! We both did the moonshine tasting and had a cocktail. Great atmosphere, great employees, great time! I'd like to come up again in the evening and have some drinks before listening to live music in Floyd. Highly recommend checking it out!

The owners were extremely inviting and cordial. The liquor was great and packed with flavor. I especially enjoyed the corn whiskey. The mixed drinks were inventive and very tasty. Not much road signage due to local regulations but keep your eyes open for it and you won't be disappointed

      First to Review

Travel is an opportunity to expand your horizons, visit new places, try new things. That's exactly what happened in Floyd, VA, when I decided to visit the Five Mile Mountain Distillery at the recommendation of a Floyd local. If you visit this part of the state, I have two recommendations. First, stop at the nearest welcome center and get an official state map which shows ALL the local roads. Then print out directions to any local spots you want to visit. The reason for these suggestions is that if you rely on a telephone based GPS like WAZE or Google Maps, you may find yourself up the proverbial creek without a paddle. We planned on visiting local wineries but without AT&T cell service we had major trouble navigating the terrain or Googling for information. Our Atlas did not show many of the local roads, just major highways.

So, with a little spare time we decided to visit Five Mile Mountain Distillery, a wonderful little operation with a polished bartender who proceeded to explain how they made their corn based moonshine and the various flavored versions which are available. Samples are available at a nominal charge either straight or in mixed sampler cocktails at quite reasonable prices. At the bartenders suggestion, I tried a first for me- a Bloody Mary made with Zing Zang mix and Five Mile Mountain Distillery 100 proof moonshine. It was REALLY GOOD. Strangely enough, the corn component of the moonshine seemed to compliment the vegetable nature of the Bloody Mary. It felt like a health food drink. I purchased a bottle of Virginia Moonshine to return to Mississippi to continue drinking healthy.

A warm and inviting patio seemed to attract locals who enjoyed their sampling outside on the deck enjoying the views of the surrounding mountains. This place is a nice little treasure to visit and spend some time in Floyd and enjoy their product produced from locally sourced corn. A great view of the distillery floor operations is available from the comfort of the tasting room.

Over the recent holiday weekend, my family spent a day in the Floyd area, one of our stops was to the 5 Mile Mountain Distillery which two of us had not visited yet and were excited to check out! The distillery is located just a very short drive from downtown Floyd. I did not have any idea what I should expect prior to getting there, but I really like the set up they have. The distillery is in a small older industrial type building. Definitely nothing special, but they have done a great job making use of it. The stills and production area is located downstairs where you cannot go, however from the bar area inside there is a window so you can look down into the area! In the bar area there is probably enough room for 8 or so people around the bar as well as another small room to relax in and more room outside. It never got crowded while we were there but there was always a nice group of 10 or so people at most times.

Our bartender was a very pleasant laid back man that took great care of us while we were there. He was knowledgeable of the products they had as well as of the Floyd area in general, which was nice. He gave us the rundown of the handful of winter cocktail drinks they had available and also told us they could do a tasting of all of their whiskeys. My dad and I opted to do the tasting while my mom and girlfriend got different cocktails. I should mention that, due to state laws, they are only allowed to serve each person a set amount per day, which I believe he told us was 3 ounces. Not an issue at all if you are coming to have a drink or do a tasting, but it is not the type of place where you could sit at the bar all night if that is what you were looking for!

Since it was Christmas time, their drinks reflected that with the options our group had being an Eggnog drink as well as Apple Cider. The Eggnog was very good, but the Apple Cider was absolutely awesome. The drink consisted of Cider, ground ginger, 5 Mile Mountain Lemon Ginseng Whiskey, and Rosemary. If you are there and in the mood for a warm drink I cannot recommend it enough. I imagine the Lemon Ginseng Whiskey would be great in just about any warm cider or tea.

During the tasting I believe we tried 5 different whiskeys. Of course a plain corn but they also had some other creative flavored whiskeys. The two that really stood out to me were Vanilla Plum and the aforementioned Lemon Ginseng. The Vanilla Plum was definitely the sweetest and I think would work very well in many different mixed drinks especially for someone who was looking for something without a real strong whiskey taste (this was also used in their eggnog cocktail). My personal favorite was actually what I believe was a newer option of a Rye Whiskey. I love a good Rye Whiskey to make old fashioned's with but this was nothing like I expected. Every other Rye Whiskey I have had has been aged but this one was a clear version. Where I believe most Rye's normally have a little more of a "bite" to them, this did not have that at all and had a very different distinct flavor. Definitely worth a try and we wound up taking a bottle of the rye as well as the Lemon Ginseng home with us.

For the size of the town, Floyd certainly has a lot of options for things to do and neat places to visit and I would add this to the list for anyone to check out while they were in town. I hope the distillery continues to do well and come out with unique products and I will definitely keep returning!

When you tell people you grew up in Floyd first after explaining where that is the next question is "Did you grow up drinking "moonshine"? ;)

SO, for me....I gotta say, never in my wildest dreams would I EVER imagine the day I would be a tourist in Floyd with our adult daughter and see a "corn distillery". But HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY to say that happen in July! 5 mile blew our minds away!!

My daughter Sarah and I while in Floyd visiting, went to the the Five Mile Mountain Distillery. I may have been the one who grew up in Floyd...however, we are both still STILL talking about our drinks and meeting Gabriel who was such a delight along with his knowledge of corn whiskey.

The distillery has a cozy atmosphere and though the visitors were not from Floyd, everyone was friendly and talkative. Just like Floyd! Visiting 5 Mile, we felt instantly as if we were at friend's home and knew each other. Gabriel is so welcoming and an incredible conversationalist, who is a world traveler "making all his guests at ease". He knows a lot about the distillery and has such a passion for what he does however, it is not over barring that one of the patrons inquired if he was owner.

If in Floyd put 5 Mile on your places to visit. It is near Slaughter's and a must for corn whiskey. Even if you don't think you may like corn whiskey. There are various types of drink selections you can pick. We are still talking about our Cosmo and Mules. Our only disappointment: we didn't go earlier and didn't get to visit again. Which now means....We are already plotting to come back to Floyd JUST for our whiskey drinks!
