My hubby & I love to wake up at 5am and workout together! It's good for our marriage because it keeps us sexy and gives us a positive activity to do together. We usually go to the gym but today we decided to take a class at Fitness Ranes. I'd heard so many great things from a few of my friends and I knew this type of high intensity workout was something my hubby would enjoy.
We arrived at about 5:20am as the instructor was opening up the studio. When we walked in she happily greeted us and introduced herself as Angie. A few more folks came in at 5:30am and we warmed up with a group of 6. We did a bunch of stretching and warmed up our muscles while the instructor wrote up our workout on a whiteboard. She started a clock and had us rotate between three strength training stations for ten minutes. Throughout the workout we did everything from weighted lunges to TRX push ups to sled pushes and pulls. While we worked out the music pumped in the background as we sweated our way through each exercise.
I really love that these workout classes are great for people of all different ages and fitness levels.Helpful 26Thanks 0Love this 25Oh no 0Jan 23, 2019Previous reviewMy hubby & I love to wake up at 5am and workout together! I'm so glad I got up the courage to start working out at Fitness Ranes!
I'm an older chubby couch potato with no core strength. I've been taking personal training sessions with Chris Ranes for two months now and I'm so happy with the results! My balance is so much better. I take the stairs more often because it doesn't wear me out as much. I'm getting better at the common fitness moves, like lunges and planks. I feel stronger and more physically capable. I'm starting to ride my bike again!
Thank you Chris!!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jonathan A.Kaneohe, HI18651Jul 11, 2020
Im actually glad this place closed. I attended Fitness Ranes several years ago. I paid upfront about 450 dollars for one on one classe with Chris. But little did i know that my training would be bumped by MMA artists. Several times when I came into the studio for my sessions Chris would only spend several minutes with me, mostly showing me a couple of excercises and how to do them. As soon as the MMA people came in, he would walk away and tend to them, proving in-depth routines and one on one motivation, leaving me out to dry. I mean, even his other trainer (think his name was Padaro or something) was trying to encourage me, even when he had his own client with him. Very sad that he would treat someone's time and more so, someone's money so poorly.
I had i think 1 month of classes, 2x a week. Did maybe 3 classes, and just got frustrated with what i seen, i left and ate the rest of the money I paid into.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 21, 2019
I needed to change up my workouts and thanks to Yelp I found Fitness Ranes. I've been coming to the morning classes for about a month and have really enjoyed it, I was sad when I had to miss a couple days. The workouts are always different, which keeps things excited. Everything can be modified depending on your fitness level. The equipment is unique to most other gyms which helps keep the workouts fresh. Also, the environment is very positive. I'm always excited for my next class, even with the 5:30 a.m. start time.

Okay I've now gone to 6 boot camp classes in the last three weeks plus orientation so I feel like I can comment on this gym and I have a good idea of what every class is like. I'm extremely impressed with Fitness Ranes and very happy I chose them!
I used to run quite a bit and hurt my ankle/foot on the last run of the marathon training series just before the 2014 marathon. It took me almost a year for my ankle to start feeling pretty good again. My ankle wasn't perfect (it still felt a little tender if I ran even a mile), but I felt like it was on the mend. I also play tennis a little bit and would do pseudo-workouts now and then to keep from getting ridiculously out of shape. Working out by myself was okay, but it didn't give me that outlet that I would get from running, so without that interest, I would never really work out that hard.
The boot camp format really works well for me. You're in a group and you can see everyone trying their hardest and it really makes you want to do the same. I've been dying in class trying to keep up, but even though I'm working really hard, it doesn't feel like hard work. It's fun and challenging and the hour goes by really quick.
I've asked several people in the class who seem to be able to do the exercises a lot better than me (more weight or more reps) how long they've been doing it, and many have been doing it for a year or more. The cool thing about it is that even though they are more fit and stronger than me, I can see they're having to work just as hard because the class scales to your abilities.
Starting out is challenging because you have to learn the warm-up routines and many of the exercises take a few times before you learn the proper ways of doing it. You pretty much just need to follow the regulars and you'll be okay. Devin has been the trainer leading every class I've gone to, and he does an outstanding job. He will watch everyone going through the exercise and has helped me a lot in making sure I have the proper form.
Most people seem to know each other, and for a newcomer that may feel intimidating, but everyone I've met is cool and supportive. Also, demographics wise, you see a pretty good representation of a good range of ages and body types. Groupon has a great way to get started, or you can download the mindbody app and buy a deal directly from there to try it out. I highly recommend you try this place out, the commitment to try is minimal.
It takes an hour for a bootcamp class, but it is a very productive and full hour. I think this class overall saves me time because I get a strong tough workout far quicker than the half-assed workouts I was trying to do on my own.
With the website or the mindbody app, booking classes is really easy. You can book or cancel a class any time day or night.
I know if I keep this up I'm going to get stronger and more fit. Even in three weeks I already feel better. Back pain is something that runs in my family, and I had been having some back pain in the morning and my back has been stiff and twinge-y for a few months, but it is pretty much gone after the first week of doing this class and getting better. Also, surprisingly my ankle has got a lot better too. This is just going twice a week. I'm really looking forward to start running again!
I will be through with my groupon classes in a week or so, but I already signed up to continue the classes past the deal expiration. I feel like the money spent here is far more productive in terms of my overall health and is a far more efficient use of my time than trying to go to a standard gym or working out at home.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Leilani A.Waipahu, HI73731Oct 21, 2018

I decided to give this gym a chance because my co-workers were going. I usually don't like to attend group functions without knowing anyone, let alone workout with people I don't know. But I have to admit, this review, is a positive one.
Location: Next to mattress firm across from the Safeway on S. King. Parking can get full though and isn't the best pulling inn and out due to traffic on Piikoi.
Atmosphere: Gym is large and air conditioned. Lots of newer equipment that's well maintained. Bathrooms could be maintained better. There is one shower.
Classes: There are classes 7 days a week I believe. I only attended those during the week. They have two morning classes and TWO evening classes Mon-fri. In between you have their private one on one classes. The boot camp classes change daily and mostly work on strength and cardio. It's fun and high intensity. You build a lot of muscle with these classes. The instructors (there are two, the owner and another) are great and are always encouraging. They Will adjust the workout as needed.
Price: I did the one month Groupon which was great! I was able to attend unlimited classes for month. I took advantage of that and went 3-4 times a week. This is the reason they lost a star though as the monthly does jump up significantly after the Groupon is over. I thoroughly thought about doing one more month though but decided I needed to lose the weight first via a cardio based gym first and possibly return in the futre.
All in all, the experience was a good one! The classes and people were great for the most part. I definitely want to return to tone when I shed some weight!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tabby B.Kaneohe, HI1401125Apr 21, 2018
This place is great. I was tired of the same 24 hour routine. Here I get it mixed up everyday. I drive all the way from Kaaawa to get here and it worth it. Trainers are awesome and so are all the clients. My son is loving it too. Give them a try.

This review is long overdue. I've been coming to Fitness Ranes for almost a year now. Initially I was looking for a gym that offers aerobics and step classes, coz those are what I used to do, before I got really sick in Nov of 2012. After I recovered, I was in really bad shape, and was inspired by all the successful transformations I saw on the website. I met with Chris, tried one class (and almost died- I couldn't even remove my sports bra that same evening, that's how out of shape I was) and, well I kept coming back haha! All the trainers and members are so welcoming and encouraging. Working out here is addicting!
Oh, confession: I strayed to a well-known MMA-style gym in town coz they had a Summer 2-week special for $91 (or something like that). The difference was day and night! I felt it the very first time I worked out there. At FR, the trainers would know right away who's new and go up to that person and introduce him/herself. They also make sure you have the right form, and if you ever need help/guidance, they would come to you, even in group class. I'm still a ways to go from my goal, but I've made some progress, slowly but surely. I am grateful that Chris is willing to coach me with my nutrition choices and for giving me tough love. The other place I visited? The nutrition expert (the owner's wife) flaked on our appointment, and then when I rescheduled, I was made to feel like I was imposing on her weekend. Not impressed at all.
Anyway, I usually hate jogging of any kind, but evidently I enjoy sprinting after the bus. It gives me much satisfaction to know that I can catch up to a bus that is driving past just as I'm exiting my work building. Must be all that VersaClimber action. Or possibly the sled? No, wait, that came in handy when my son and I were running through the airport and I found it easier to just push him and our luggage on a cart haha! Many of the moves we learn in class are practical and can be done when I'm traveling. And I've learned that women are definitely more than capable of carrying and lifting heavier weights!
Classes are always fun, always different, and always challenging - but always doable, coz you go at your own pace/comfort level. If you're reading this and wondering if you should check the gym out, COME! You won't be disappointed. :)Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Glitzy T.Hamden, CT13936Apr 20, 2018
