When you visit Maryland it's a rule (at least for me) that you have to stop and get some seafood at least once. A couple weekends ago, my boyfriend, our friend, and I were visiting a friend of ours in the Capitol Hill area, and within the first few hours of being in-state we decided to go to lunch at Fishouse.

We checked Yelp to see what was food was available nearby, and for us it was between BBQ and some good fried fish. Fried fish is one of my favorite comfort foods, and it wasn't long before we settled on Fishouse as our lunchtime spot. Once I saw the menu, my first choice was crabcakes. They were out of crabcakes, though, so catfish was my second choice with sides of greens and mac and cheese, and a corn muffin. My boyfriend got the same thing, which turned out to be a good choice so we didn't have to share! Our friend got the blackened shrimp and it looked amazing and perfectly seasoned.

After eating what felt like a ton, I had enough left over for a whole other meal. Before we arrived, I read some previous Yelp reviews that mentioned how good the greens were, and delicious would be an understatement! They were smoky, juicy, and just the right amount of salty. For less than $25 for my boyfriend and I together, this was a great deal. I'm not sure when we'll be in the area again, but when we are we'll definitely be back.

Not my cup of tea. Well, actually the tea was the only thing I did enjoy. I stoped by to try the sides everyone was raving about. The mac-n-cheese tastes processed. The sweet potato dish was borderline rude it was so bland. You have to do
more than just purée a tater and throw some brown sugar on top. The greens weren't memorable. The house made sweet tea tho...refreshingly delicate. *shrug* I'll keep on rolling.

After eating popeyes bland ass rice, I decided to search food on my app to see what I could find. It was by the grace of food that I landed on this amazing establishment! I did not know what I was getting into but I was about to find out.

A half hour later my courier delivers my food and viola it's time to eat, I open up my box and what do I find? Blackened salmon with lemon and a beautiful blue and purple flower I cut off a corner and that's when it hit me, the besttt salmon I've had all year! The flavorssss omg the flavors! Now I'm ready to try more, I rip the lid off of the collards and booooooooooom an explosion of even more flavor and I don't even eat everyone's collards, it takes a special person to make them right! I'm not even done eating but I hadddd to take to yelp to write this review. The cook at this place knows what they are doing, those hands are truly blessed. #foodmeatsfashion

      Fishy

Yay! I'm a fan. My coworker recommended Fish House. He had great things to say about the jerk chicken wings and the catfish.

I tried the jerk chicken wings twice here and I was not disappointed. They give you very nice sized wings with a deep, rich hue that suggests they were marinaded. The wings are juicy with a little kick to them and the texture of the skin is just right. The jerk sauce on these wings is sort of caked on and not really wet (if that makes sense). It's a nice change of pace, but I prefer a more wet experience when having jerk chicken.

Which brings me to my only flaw... the rice and peas (rice and beans). They are kind of bland and dry. They give you some liquid juice like substance that I believe is supposed to go over the rice. It helps a little bit, but the dryness of the rice and the wings leaves a bit to be desired. It's not a deal breaker, but you should just know what to expect before you order. I also tried the spinach and collard greens. Both of those were good.

The customer service is very good. I look forward to poking around the menu and seeing if I can find a 5 star combination here. I prefer rice and peas with my jerk chicken, but I'm going to explore other sides. I'll probably venture into the seafood and see what it's hittin' for.

Craved some fried fish but didn't feel like cooking it. I decided to stop in since I always drive by the location. Its a small house like structure next to seven eleven so im expecting it to look homey on the inside. I walk inside the fish house and I'm in awe at the beautiful decor, the beautiful sea blue on the walls and the paintings just really make it pop. It's clean on the inside, smells like good food and I'm ready to eat. The wait is not too bad as everything is made to order. The lady behind the counter is very pleasant and the cook was smiling the entire time. She gives me the bag and we exchange pleasantries and I leave. When I get to the car, I tear open the box like a savage cause I'm now starving. Open the box and the portions are huge!!! Baby let me get into this fish, well seasoned and good asf!! Now this is whiting!! Garcia, I will be back...I'm sold!

The Fishouse, complete with just one H. A cool name for a cool little place. We were headed to Maryland for the weekend which is like a 4 hour drive from Pittsburgh. So once we arrived and got checked in, we were ready for some good , quick food. We did our Yelp duty and found the house to get fish. Glad we did!

First thing you notice is a small storefront, looks like they do mostly delivery and takeout. There were a few tables to hangout and wait for your food. Taking a look at the menu there were plenty types of seafood to choose from. My girl and I went with the fried catfish and our buddy got the blackened shrimp. If you want to talk about fish fried to perfection, this was it! I got the potato salad and the greens. These greens were on another level. Just the flavors and spices mixed with pork shreds were so delicious. Best greens I've had that weren't made by my grandmother. Unreal. My buddy said he could literally eat that blackened ship all day long and it wouldn't be a problem. Fishouse is Fire!

To top it all off, the prices are hard to beat. The fish dinner with 2 side dishes costs $12. Certainly a great price for the quality of food and the taste. And they had this hibiscus tea that was to die for. Fishouse is on my list next time I'm in the DMV!

I've been twice and trust that I will keep going back. First time I went I got the 1/2 jerk chicken dinner. The chicken was tender and juicy. There was so serious heat on the jerk. I mean, my nose was running and I was sweating the entire time I ate it. But it was damn good. The second time I went I got the blackened catfish. Two good sized portions of catfish with a great balance of spices and seasoning. Fish was very tasty and the right texture. It wasn't too soft or mushy.

Both times I went I got the same sides. I got collard greens and rice & peas. The collards were seasoned perfectly. There wasn't an overabundance of vinegar. It was just right. I couldn't figure out what else was used to season them, but it was a little sweet. But I liked it. The rice & peas were just okay. They were a little dry. However they include some jerk gravy on the side. The poured the entire container of the jerk gravy onto the rice & peas and that definitely was the difference. They should probably just make the rice & peas with the jerk gravy and serve it that way. I also got a corn muffin each time and those were good as well. They were moist and not dry. Good sized muffin that wasn't too sweet.

All things considered, I'm loving this spot and it's on my go-to list when I'm in that area.

So first let me start with the customer service. It was great. The man who took our order addressed my 7 yr old directly, which automatically earns my respect.

We ordered jerk chicken dinner (they only had wings for white meat) with fried cabbage and onion rings for my kid and whiting filet alone with cornbread for me. We also ordered chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies.

      The cons:

The fried cabbage was disgusting. It was bland and sautéed with red and yellow peppers. Not my style. My daughter ate the onions out of the rings. She didn't really like the breading on them. My filet had bones in it, but i anticipate bones in fish regardless, so it wasn't a huge deal. The cornbread fell apart so it was hard to eat.

      The pros:

The jerk chicken is delicious. Nowhere near as hot as I thought it would be, which I am glad for. My daughter loved it too. The whiting was fried lightly, which made the taste of the fish stand out. The seasoning was just right and not salty or overpowering. Really good. The cookies were ok.

I am a little disappointed in the sides, but overall the food was satisfying and the people were really friendly.

      I'll definitely return.

I decided to give this spot a try after reviewing the help reviews. The whiting was very well seasoned & the pieces were pretty nice portions. The Potato salad was pretty good, not a fan of the Mac & chz. My daughter enjoyed the bbq chkn & I enjoyed the greens. The greens were smack your mama good; very nice & flavorful!! I'll be going back just for the greens:)

This is definitely a hidden gem and if you're ever in Maryland, This is the place to go. Do not be fooled by the casual appearance outside for this place packs a BIG FOOD PUNCH. The staff very friendly, clean and dishing out healthy portion sizes to fill 2 people on one order. Fried to perfection and seasoned just right. The catfish and whiting fish is absolutely some of the best fish I've had. they even ask how do you like your fish fried. The Mac n cheese and collards compliment any meal that you can get from here. The prices are well worth it and very reasonable and not only will I recommend this but I will be stopping by again before I leave town. With so many options on the menu I'm looking forward to another wonderful meal.
