I'd definitely stay away from this place. I wish I would've stuck with my intuition when I first toured it and not signed up... but, I did anyway.
As many other reviews have pointed out, the contracts are a joke and the staff will do everything in their power to ensure you can't cancel. But, the unhelpfulness from the staff doesn't just have to do with canceling, they're generally unhelpful and have better things to do... like check their cell phones, or hide in the office and check their cell phones.
Old, dirty, broken, uncared for equipment is the name of the game here. What the hell isthat smell and where is it coming from?
Get out of here. There are better places, with better equipment, better rates, and better everything.Forget it.Helpful 12Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Patricia R.Grand Rapids, MI02May 25, 2018
Dirty. Disorganized, lacking staff. But those on site are great. The daily fitness trainers for zumba are great. The place is dirty with cobwebs in the rafters, crud on the floor.
I stay because the classes are great. A little management would go a long way.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - David C.Comstock Park, MI01Jul 18, 2017
The equipment is in total disrepair, everything others have said i agree. I was told i would have a Free month trial, but I had to pay $15 for a card to get in and out of the place. Its also how much they charge per month. NOT FREE, also they gave my daughter a hard time when she just wanted to go a few months when she was home from school and said derogatory remarks about me to her. CLASSLESS THUGS
The changing rooms stink, there is filth in the showers, a total pig pen.
Why they are still in business I have NO idea. Their end couldn't come soon enoughHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rain H.Grand Rapids, MI6391Nov 1, 2014
This is an absolute horrible place, and I advise any of you NOT TO SIGN UP. They are the biggest scam ever! They will try to rip you off the best they can. They will tell you different things that what they write on the contract, and when you try and cancel it their response is "don't you care about your fitness goals?"
Also, I worked in their corporate office for the day and not only did they not pay me, but over heard so much different stuff from many of the people there. I seen thousands of people's contracts and once they're up, they auto renew them without asking you.
I advise anyone to find a different gym, trust me.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kevin W.Santa Monica, CA92201Nov 26, 2014
Hi Family Fitness,
This is my 3rd request to have you cancel my deceased mother's membership (Susan Merz - 2894200). My first request came when my mother had cancer and was obviously unable to attend the gym. I find it very frustrating that you don't allow people to cancel their memberships from the location they attend and that you request people to cancel through the corporate location, which conveniently does not have any contact information on the main web page. I've tried contacting the corporate location through email but they have ignored each and every one. You are taking advantage of people and you should be ashamed of yourselves. Please cancel my mother's membership and respond to my email.
Thank you,Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nell W.Grand Rapids, MI762Jun 5, 2014
THIS PLACE IS COMPLETE GARBAGE! They lock you into a contract with hidden fees and change the rules. I had originally signed up with Family Fitness with personal training sessions - 1hr for $20.00. But then they decided to change their rates and go $20.00 for 30 minutes! Even though I had A CONTRACT saying that that was the rate I got. They denied me and forced me to go to the Wyoming Family Fitness to get that deal, which is WAY out of my way.
Not only will they not work with you... CANCELLING is next to impossible. When my contract with them was pretty much up. I told them that I was not renewing. NO ONE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS AN AUTO RENEWAL. They just said Okay. So I had to call the Cooperate office and NO ONE EVER ANSWERED MY CALLS. I called every day for a week and tried to leave messages AS WELL AS email. Did I ever get a response? NO!
These guys are crooks and not worth anything. I will never recommend them to anyone and say STAY AWAY!! KEEP YOUR MONEY!
I had to get the bank in on it to strong arm them into giving me my money back.
Worse. Place. Ever.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Moon J.Grand Rapids, MI446232Nov 14, 2011First to Review
Now known as Family Fitness, the gym offers members: cardio machines and weight machines on the main floor AND free weights in the basement. There is also a tanning bed (standing) and a dry sauna.
Next door, there is a women's only side to the gym.
The hours of operation are pretty good, 24 hours on the Weekdays and shorter hours on the Weekends.
I've been a member at this gym since it has opened up (and even before when previous owners ran it as "Powerhouse Gym"). And in my opinion the hours, location and cost are advantages to being a member. The disadvantages are: weights are unorganized at times and the changing rooms could use an update.
Overall, I would recommend the gym. I can get in and out, and has everything I need for my workout.!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - A W.Grand Rapids, MI70183May 2, 2018
Family Fitness is the worst gym with the worst business practices I can imagine. I "won" a year gym membership with them and when I went in, it turned out that I still had to pay for it, but at a discounted price. They also told us (my roommate and I) that there would be no contract. Well when my roommate decided to cancel because she was moving, they charged her $300. Along the same lines, I won a couple one-on-one training sessions and when I asked to have one more, they charged me $20 for it but then signed me up for a year contract without telling me about it and continued to charge my credit card. When I called about it, they said I should have known it was a contract that that to cancel I would have to pay hundred of dollars. So I cancelled my credit card because I also moved out of the area. I just recently got an email threatening to send my account to collections and when I called the corporate office, they put me on hold for 30 mins until I hung up and then didn't answer when I called back. After ignoring my calls, their machine says, "we will get back to you within 2 business days", which is conveniently the time frame they will be sending my account to collections. I know for a fact that they are in a massive lawsuit regarding these business practices and it's all a massive headache. I would never, ever consider joining any of the locations of this gym.

I wish I read reviews on this place. I recently won a membership to this place, signed up with them, it has been less then a month and I contacted them about cancelling... they are going to charge me $250. I haven't even stepped into this crap hole since I was there the first day. Stay away from these liars and cheats! They will rape your wallet good.
Also good look trying to talk to anyone on the phone, they are seriously overly rude. After I explained that I couldn't pay that much to cancel the guy literally said "sucks to be you". Can you believe that nonsense.
Family fitness has the worst costumer service anywhere.lHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jason S.Hudsonville, MI0144Jan 16, 2019
I have been a meme we of this gym for two years so after School I desided to hit the gym. I called a "Cassie" and she was supposed to be at the desk and help me tour the gym. Instead I wondered around the gym for 20 minuets to have a "Alex" checkout my girlfriend in front of me with our kid to have him not make eye contact then upon only seconds of eye contact before he continued to stare at my girl he glared at me only when I told him that Holland Branch of Family Fitness doesn't have staff that leave the desk unattended and that he was stupid.
