It's been quite a while since we made it over to see Tom Spicer at his little East Dallas storefront, but honestly our visit was sort of formative from a food and cooking perspective.
Tom is like the Willy Wonka of produce: Quirky, colorful, and extremely passionate about his products. High-end Dallas chefs have sourced from him for years; the storefront seems like more of a side project.
On one trip two summers ago we were introduced to food curiosities we had never seen or tasted: sea beans, fiddlehead ferns, and an assortment of exotic mushrooms.
We also noticed a big 55-gallon drum in the corner. Turns out it was filled with extremely fresh unfiltered Texas olive oil. Sampling it, we noticed an incredibly clean grassy flavor with a peppery finish. The slight burn in the back of the throat comes from naturally-occurring oleocanthal, which indicates freshness.
Tom is so freewheeling that he didn't even have a way for us to take some olive oil home. "People usually bring in their own containers," he told us. We ended up carrying our oil out in a rinsed out juice bottle. So all summer the we drizzled the Best Dang Olive Oil Ever from the lip of a Pom Wonderful container.
I'm rambling on, but F-M 1410 really is a unique spot. It's not your mother's Whole Foods and who the heck knows what their hours are... but if you get excited about food you should poke your head in to see what strange and wonderful things Tom has to offer.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Greg S.Dallas, TX411304Mar 28, 2009First to Review
I have only been in one time but i am a fan! Don't expect too much when you walk in the place is a little gritty.
So why go --- for quality food some grown on site. When I went (early Spring) they had some yellow tomatoes, tons of fresh wild mushrooms, and a number of other things. To give you an idea of the quality of the food --- all the top chef's in Dallas come here. The owner is a guy named Tom Spicer also a chef.
Anyway give it a try it is right next to Jimmy's so even if it is not for you your trip is not wasted... By the way... not much signage so you may have to search a bit .Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Frances H.Austin, TX330211533184Mar 11, 2011
What a knowledgeable little nook of spices and herbs. This highly understated little diddy is not so easy to find, but once you step foot inside you wander why and how you didn't know of this place before.
It has a vast array of herbs, plants, fungi, vegetables and everything to do with growing of the sort. But wait! It gets better...drum roll, please...
You go through the unassuming little door in the back of the space and you are immediately transported into The Secret Garden. No joke. It is a beautifully maintained garden right in the middle of seedy East Dallas. Pun intended. It is quite a sight.
The chill attitude of the owner perfectly compliments the organic vibe resonating throughout this place.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Karen H.Dallas, TX18Mar 6, 2012

Spiceman's FM 1410 phone # is 214-954-7974. Please change it YELP as we have been trying to get you to change it through your website for 5 months.
Also, we take all credit cards EXCEPT Amex. Thank you :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kristin N.Carrollton, TX15206Jul 18, 2014
This little hole in the wall is not largely advertised, but rather is known about by word of mouth, or purely by accident. I am so glad someone told me about it. The guys that run this shop are very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. Interesting variety of vegetable, herbs, and of course their mushrooms. I have been there several times and will keep coming back. Pricing is very reasonable and I tell people about this place whenever I get the chance.

Awesome local business. Just stopped by today and saw it was closed. No idea what happened. Best place to buy mushrooms, salad (fresh out of the garden), greens. What a loss. Hope he will open again or at a new location. Saved me from trying to plan my own arugula. Fantastic place and the salad/mushrooms were found on the menus of many great restaurants around town.
