This spot is a gem. The sushi chef is super and the co-owner Mogi is fun and engaging. I have eaten a lot of sushi in the west loop over the past 11 years living here and this is my favorite. BYOB or they have wine, sake and beer options available for purchase. Don't miss this spot.
Went back again now twice and the experiences were just as great as the first. Moji was there with a big smile and hug and the rolls were delicious...well thought out and beautiful presentation. We had a delicious bottle of cold sake that was so reasonably priced. The Sakura Blossom roll is amazing! We will be back as soon as we can.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 26, 2019Previous reviewThis spot is a gem. The sushi chef is super and the co-owner Mogi is fun and engaging. Dragon Maki (shrimp temporal, cucumber, crab, avocado, and cream cheese with eel on top) and Green turtle (salmon, mango, and avocado) both with soy paper is soooooooo good! Pair with the sushi style egg rolls (I forget the name), and the cucumber salad for a perfect meal to fill two!
Delicious!
They also have green tea ice cream and vanilla tempura ice cream.
Definitely our local fave to walk to.
Wish it was a full bar and the pot stickers were a lil better.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 24, 2017
Ordered food for pickup through yelp. It was ready within 30 minutes. Everything was pretty good. Nothing too crazy/special but would order from here again.
I ordered the vegetable egg rolls, garden vegetable roll, and spicy crunchy crab roll. All were decent. The vegetable egg roll came with 2 in an order with a creamy dipping sauce. FYI- They were pretty small. The garden roll had an interesting variety of vegetables in it and the spicy crunchy crab roll was on point.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 10, 2019
I think this place was pretty underrated! We were looking for a quiet BYOB spot and that was what we found at EJ sushi.
Couple nice things was that it was not crowded at all on a Friday night and we loved how there was a fridge right in the dining area to keep your beers in so it really felt like having an outing at home.
The sushi was surprisingly good. We loved the simple rolls as much as the signature maki. There's also a free cucumber salad or miso soup through Yelp. The cucumber salad was a bit too sesame flavored so id recommend the soup.
Being BYOB it really kept the costs down and started off our night our perfectly (and tipsy). We'll be back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kimmie R.Chicago, IL114509279May 6, 2019
First, I gave two stars for the customer service, but... real big BUT here.
The sushi is subpar at best, which makes me kind of sad to report because the restaurant itself has very friendly staff but we can't eat the staff now can we?
The sushi rolls weren't tightly wrapped, had too much extra rice, and something about the flavor was just very odd. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just the one day that I ate there, but I most certainly won't be trying them again.
There are too many sushi restaurants in Chicago for a person to give a second chance to one that didn't meet their expectations. Overall, the non-sushi dishes were actually kind of, okay. The chicken friend rice was very good, and the meat was nicely cooked! It also has a decent flavor and texture so it was all very freshly made.
There's room for improvement but they should make it quick, because it's easy to go out of business over food quality.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Duane L.Elmwood Park, IL1211Sep 21, 2019

This has been my favorite sushi spot in Chicago because of the quality, price, and atmosphere. The rolls are creative and use a good amount of fresh ingredients, and the space is intimate yet modern. As is the nature of sushi restaurants in Chicago, after a few visits the quality has gone down, and I really want the best for this spot as it's great sushi!
I do have some suggestions for management-
when we bring wine because of your BYOB policy, please do not awkwardly point out you now carry wine and insist we buy something off your new list instead of acknowledging and accepting we already brought wine as soon as we are seated. You said you are going to impose a corking fee soon and that's fine, but insisting we buy wine when we clearly came with wine and being visibly upset we brought wine made us uncomfortable.
Also, my friend ordered the tonkatsu ramen and we were first clearly served a miso ramen-the broth was watery and plain. Instead of acknowledging this the hostess/owner nervously insisted the ramen was "japan-style" and grudgingly took the ramen away and replaced it with another bowl which was thicker with miso but just as plain. I KNOW this was not tonkatsu(pork bone/fat) ramen because we took some home and it did not thicken or solidify once refrigerated!!! And the wasabi balls we were served with the sushi were dried out on the outside and clearly pre-made and stuck in a fridge for some time before being served.
Finally, when we told the hostess/owner we had a groupon she became upset and told us that they have discontinued using groupon, that groupon is making more money off itself than she is, and that the groupon is only for new customers. She kept asking us when we purchased the groupon and despite showing her the groupon expires months from now she was reluctant to use it. However she did eventually cave and I think ultimately the owners are just unaware of using social media and technology and would benefit from better knowing their customer base and focusing on customer service.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Delgermaa G.San Francisco, CA1452125Jul 10, 2018

They have been in the neighborhood and I hadn't gotten a chance to bring anyone with me until my parents came into town. I finally got to take advantage of the 2 specialty rolls with wine for $20. We also did the 3 rolls and soup lunch special for $13.95, and then we did an order of the chicken yaki soba. I also got the neighborhood discount of 10% off, how is this for a deal?! There are so many options on the menu - ranging from ramen to pocky/poke bowls. This makes it dangerous for me to want to come here more often. For the 3 rolls we got the spicy crab, salmon avocado, and the tuna avocado, and with the specialty we got the West Town and the Chicago Fire. We had to remind them about the soup, but otherwise service was good.
