Stopped by again this year and I have to say, I'm even more of a fan. It's just such a fun spot to grab a bite and root beer and hang out. They've got plenty of picnic tables but also adirondack chairs, benches, and even cornhole to play while you're there.
My husband and I were here in late August, just in time for yellow jacket season, and I was pleasantly surprised to find netting around pretty much all the picnic tables, keeping the bugs at bay so you can enjoy your meal. First meal I'd had that week where I wasn't even a little bit stressed about getting stung. Very appreciated!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Aug 27, 2020Previous reviewMy husband and I were driving to Oval Beach when we saw the big Root Beer Barrel as a shining beacon on the corner. "WHAT IS THAT?" I said, in excitement. I remember the barrel from the last time we were there but it wasn't open so I just assumed it was a big photo op structure. But this time it was hoppin'. I pulled out my phone and looked it up and squealed in delight to find that it was a root beer and hot dog stand!
Unfortunately we had just eaten and it closed before we were ready for dinner so the next day when lunch rolled around we hit it. We got 3 dogs to split--chili cheese, BLT, and the brat of the day (topped with and peppers and onions) plus chips, a root beer and a rootbeer float. It was all fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my favorite was actually the BLT dog but I would not have said no to any of the others again.
It's a walk up stand with tons of picnic table seating which is perfect for pandemic dining. We saw an employee wiping down and disinfecting the tables as we were waiting for our order. It's surrounded by lots of pretty greenery and plants and since it's on the way to the beach I could see myself taking root beer floats or ice cream (also offered) as a treat to eat at the beach.
My only gripe is that despite being masked, 2 of the 3 employees that day had them below their noses which....kind of defeats the purpose. I was surprised given how seriously they were taking things with lot of hand sanitizer around, signage requiring masks, etc. Luckily once we got our food we were able to step pretty far away and eat nicely distanced from everyone else. Oh and it's cash only so come prepared! - 23424599Jul 29, 2023
Found this by total accident and had to stop for root beer floats! Outstanding and super fun! My husband just got the regular draft root beer and it was out of this world! So tasty, not sickening sweet and so fun! I highly recommend!

One of our favorite places near Saugatuck. Well worth the wait and decent prices. Have been here multiple times and we will always stop in when we visit nearby. Hard to pick a favorite since all are delicious. They are cash/check only.

How could this giant barrel stand not catch your eye as you're in the area? I saw the building and I needed to stop by to check it out.
It was apparently an old drive thru stand in it's past and was restored and moved to it's current location.
The root beer is from Sprechers in Wisconsin, so I thought that was a bit odd since we were in Michigan. But I thought the snacks were a good value. The hot dogs were unique (like Mac n cheese dog). The Mac and cheese was actually legit good, so good that we ordered another while we were there.
The root beer float was a good refresher during the afternoon we were there. The location also had some nice umbrella covered picnic tables and games like bags available for play.
Nice spot, glad to have checked it out and stretch the legs and a photo op as wellHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Carolina B.ASTORIA, NY477899Jul 18, 2023
This place was so delicious. They were set up with two lines: one for food & one for if you just wanted drinks. We were two people so while one waited on the food line the other ordered root beer floats for us to drink while waiting in line. Those floats are amazing - I think they have the root beer on tap and it not syrupy sweet. The food was worth the wait! But be warned they are short staffed and the wait is long. We no joke waited over an hour in line - so be prepared for a long wait if there is a line. Also they are Cash Only!

I had hot dog with Mac n cheese and chili. Mac n cheese is delicious! My husband had the Chicago dog and New York dog with tomotoes added. If you like sauerkraut get the NY dog! The Chicago dog was good too. My hubby said the potato salad was one of the best he has ever had! Atmosphere was great. They even provide nets over the picnic tables to keep the bees away. Root beer is Sprechers, always good.

Best root beer, root beer floats and varieties of special hot dogs! Chili cheese dog and baked beans are our FAVE!!! Love this place. Can't wait for them to open up already next season. Bummed that we discovered this hidden gem very late in the season.

Root beer floats are still the way to go, however we had their hot dog options and they were excellent! Got a Classic Chicago dog with all the fixings piled high. Got a chili cheese dog and it couldn't even be picked up because their was so much goodness on top. Got the "Robbie" that had peppers, onions, Swiss cheese, and A-1 sauce. Also, the side of Mac and Cheese for $4 could feed a family! All the food was great and the floats were awesome as always. The line looks long, but it moves quickly!
