I recently had a couple leaks show up in my ceiling, so I called Dana Dean Roofing to schedule someone to come take a look and see if they could determine where the water was coming through the roof.
Dana arrived on time and was up on my roof in the blink of an eye. He immediately saw several exposed nails that he believed to be the cause of the leaks, along with some issues with chimney flashing and other minor issues with some shingles near our skylight (near the leak on the interior ceiling). Dana got me an estimate of $375 plus tax within a day and a half. Another estimate I received, from Recovery Roofing, was $1,600 and that guy didn't even climb on my roof (which meant he wasn't even sure of what was causing the leak).
Dana's son-in-law came last night and completed the leak repair work in a timely manner. He called twice before arriving to let me know when he would be there.
Dana's pricing was very reasonable (much, much lower than other estimates) and he was honest about the work that needed to be done. The first thing he said to me after climbing off the roof was, "You could definitely fix this yourself-- it's not that hard. But I'll work up a quote for you in case you don't want to climb up on your roof" (very steep). Before he arrived, my wife and I thought the roof may need to be replaced completely. Dana assured us that the roof has at least several more years of life left in it and told me, "Don't let anyone come out here and tell you this roof needs to be replaced." I appreciated that honesty.
Also, Dana's repair work has a 3-year warranty behind it. Highly recommended.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Gary H.Raleigh, NC1137Jun 20, 2021
I used Dana Dean to replace my roof a couple years back. I keep finding issues with it so thought I would post of a review on here.
PRICE
The quote the gave me was in the middle of the pack compared to some other places I got estimates from so figured it was a decent value.
SCHEDULING
During the time the work was being done it was very difficult to get an answer about when they would perform the work. I had to keep emailing them to find out and finally after mentioning I might just go with another place they came through and did the job.
WORK DONE
The workers removed retaining wall stones around my flower beds without my permission. It would not have been a huge deal but I had spent a lot of time to level them and use cement and construction glue to hold them in place. I pointed that out and they offered to fix them but didn't.
I had asked for them to install drip edge where it was missing on my roof. They did not install ANY drip edge and even left the old bits and pieces. I have seen more reputable places remove and replace all drip edge. When I pointed it out later, they tried to shove it up under the shingles but made a big mess out of it due to the gutters being in the way. It was such a huge mess that I had them just remove what they had done and I am left with no drip edge.
They completely bent up the flashing that runs along the front of my house. I had just installed it a year or so earlier when replacing siding and it was perfect. It looks pretty horrible now and I will need to eventually replace it. I don't know why they didn't just replace it when the messed it up. One spot over a bay window was particularly bad. Instead of replacing it, after I pointed it out, the owner just came and installed a piece on top of the old mess so that it looked nicer. I ended up ripping that off and fixing their mess.
STUFF FOUND LATER
After some time I noticed a shingle was sticking up. I went on the roof and found that they did not nail in a nail all the way and it was causing the shingle to stick up. I fixed that myself.
Worst of all, I was doing some work in my attic and noticed some plywood that had been water damaged. It was obvious that it was old damage. Part of the deal was that they would replace any bad wood and they just shingled right over this.
WORKERS
They did not speak English so it was almost impossible to talk to them without and I had to call or email the owner when there were issues.
SUMMARY
The shingles look nice and I haven't noticed any leaks so I assume that they will last me for awhile. But, the flashing work is horrible and the quality of the detail work is bad. I would never recommend this company or use them again in any capacity.
I did not receive any warranty paperwork when the work was done. I am not sure how it works here but when I had my roof replaced in Texas I go a certificate so that if I had trouble I could get it fixed under warranty.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - J B.Durham, NC018Nov 2, 2017
Dana Dean did a complete roof/shingle replacement for our house, including some dry rot in one spot.
PROS: Competitive price and great product (shingles and underneath system). The son (Dana Dean Jr.) was very personable when he came to our house. He personally got up on the roof to inspect it. Other companies we quoted only used satellite imagery. He obviously knew this roofing trade and made us very comfortable with using his family's company and the products.
CONS: Despite assurances that they would be careful and also remove all the waste, we did have damage to one bush afterward (from where the crew had thrown down a piece of roofing), various nails that were found in the grass around the perimeter (bad for the feet of our children and pets, plus the lawnmower!), a small roof section they had to redo as it wasn't done according to spec, and a roof piece they had to go back later and re-add as they forgot it the first time. In addition, the job was only supposed to take a few days, but the father (Dana Dean Sr.) pulled guys off our job to do another job and our total project took about two weeks.
OVERALL: I would still use Dana Dean Roofing in the future. I did like the company; I felt they were honest and did good work. I would need to talk more with them about the several issues that did come up so that they would not be repeated in the future.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eric K.Austin, TX017972Sep 5, 2017
I recently inherited a home in Raleigh. I thought the roof was original and needed to be replaced. Based on their strong Yelp reviews I reached out to Dana Dean roofing for a bid on a new roof.
They came over to inspect the roof and give me a bid. Dana told me that the roof was still fine. That I had 5 years left on it.
I'm out of state and it would have been easy for him to replace the roof but instead he did the right thing and recommended that I hold off on the roof for now.

This company false advertises. I don't recall the name of the rep but I told them I needed a quote for a small roof repair and that my insurance adjuster had already been out and paid me my claim. All I needed was a contractor to do the work. The rep was nice and was like oh this will be an easy quote, just email a copy of your claim and any photos to danadeanroofing@gmail.com and they would get me a quote much faster. I emailed my insurance paperwork as soon as I got off the phone with them on Monday. I emailed them on Tuesday to follow up since no one replied to my email they received on Monday. They finally email me back that they no longer service Durham?? Their website clearly shows they service my Durham zip code on their website so I have to assume they had no interest in completing my small roof repair.

Dana Dean Roofing is an excellent, locally owned and operated company. I highly recommend them.
They went above and beyond in fixing a leak in my roof. They were fast, affordable, reliable and very polite.
- They got back to me quickly and set up a date to provide an estimate long before other companies.
- They showed up exactly when he said he would. I didn't have to wait all day - both for the estimate and for the work.
- He took the time to not only examine the one spot with the problem, but also took a look at the entire roof - front and back. He took photos and explained what he was seeing clearly to me - answered all my questions patiently.
- They provided a clear estimate, both verbally and in writing, with a few different options for the repairs.
- They were affordable, VERY fair and flexible.
- They provide a 3 year transferrable warranty, so even the next owners will benefit from their good work.
I can't recommend them enough. Give them a call. Good people, good work.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - M O.Oxford, NC082Aug 20, 2018
I called to ask for an estimate on a Monday and was told they'd call me Sunday afternoon to let me know when they'd be coming out.
It rained every single day that week.
Sunday at 5 pm, the owner left a VM saying they don't come to this part of town and blamed his staff who "didn't know that".
Did I mention it had been raining every day this week -- and no one thought to go through the calls until Sunday afternoon, and then thought an apology for WASTING a week of my time when I could have been finding another roofer was acceptable?
All the rave reviews in the world really don't help when I'm told that my time doesn't matter. This is a crummy way to run a business, and I won't be using the guy he recommended either. I am very angry and very disappointed. I don't mind the fact he doesn't come out this far, I mind very much the fact that he let a whole WEEK go by before telling me so.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jesse B.Raleigh, NC22175Jan 6, 2017
This was one of the best experiences I have ever had with a contractor. I got multiple estimates from roofing companies and I chose Dana Dean for a couple reasons. The first was that the architectural shingles came with the normal bid whereas other companies wanted to charge extra for an upgrade. The next was the one on one experience I had with Dana. He is a down to earth family man and the vibe I got was professional and nice. He came out did the estimate and when I was ready we set a date. He had his crew out here on that date and they were early, they completed the job and cleaned up and the end result was wonderful. Dana communicated with me any time I needed to. He didn't demand payment up front and sent an invoice a week later with a nice follow up email. I would definitely recommend him and I will be using him again in the future.

We had a great experience with Dana Dean Roofing. We had a patch done before we had the money to do the roof and they were timely, polite, and the patch held.
When we did the entire roof, they were great to help us pick an appropriate type of roof for our house, again timely, and professional. Their prices were reasonable.
On the day of the roof replacement, they were here on time and the roof was done when we got home (we have a small house). The yard was clean and it looked great!
That was a year ago - and no leaks!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Gman G.Raleigh, NC2114218Jun 3, 2017Updated review
The below statement is an email I replied back to your email two days ago raising your rating from one star to three based on your statement to me but from what I read today, I don't think you read it:
I updated Yelp.com after I read your statement below. I kept copies of communications and even after that Friday, days went by with no call to tell me what exactly was going to be done and or replaced and when the new date would be done. I spoke to your mom somewhere in between those dates and she stated that someone would get back to me.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hey Mr. and Mrs Garrison we really do sincerely apologize that we missed your email and honestly there are no excuses for it but you guys are not being completely honest with the people in your review.
When we seen this review we started trailing the e-mails back to see which one we missed, and we found yours that was still in bold letters, unseen.
Unfortunately we did miss your email due to the overwhelming inquiries that we were receiving for estimates due to the recent rain storms.
But your email had no mentioning wanting us to do the work and you never electronically signed your estimate confirming you guys wanted us to do the work. After checking in with the office going over all the notes and going over the caller ID's on everyone's phones I can not find any evidence that guys ever called, text or emailed anyone here to confirm the work to be done. We keep strong records of all calls and never throw anything away. On our estimates there is a link that says print or electronically sign. As soon as we get a confirmation to do the work it goes directly on the schedule board. We do get to all our jobs in a timely manner. And if we do not think we can get a job for two weeks do not mind saying that.
Honestly we really do try our best to make sure every email and message is answered and that our customers are happy with our services and I know that no one can be perfect all the time but we we really do strive for perfection and take the satisfaction of our customers very seriously. It's our livelihood and really does mean the everything to us, so we do take any issue you have to heart. We are really family oriented company that enjoys helping others and from the bottom of our hearts we all apologize for overlooking your email and really don't want you guys to think of us in a negative way.May 23, 2017Previous reviewThey came and did a free inspection and emailed me a quote on the 4 May 17 and I emailed them back what exactly was going to be done, replaced, and never heard nothing even after the day they said they were going to do it but it rained nobody still called for a new date. He seemed very nice but I think they have too much work and not enough people to get the job done so I had to find somebody else.
