I had some today to start back what I had stopped some time ago! My food reviewing and blogging! In the laid back island of st. Thomas with the carribean calypso in the background it seemed the perfect setting. I was in the island for a couple of days and I had pretty much covered the three major eating spots - Main Street, the French quarter and around Havensight mall. By far the French quarter and Paradise Point have the best views of the water but I think the Main Street had the best food - though I must admit the differences in the quality were really marginal! If you ask any local which is a place for eating good Carribean food, Cuzzin's would surely come up! So, it was difficult to avoid eating there! I had the daily special - which turned out to be shrimp and escargots in a butter creole reduction - ordered that with a side of mac and cheese and flavored rice. And passionfruit juice.... The shrimp and the escargot were really well made and the seasoning and sauce was also superb! But the kicker was the home made hot sauce! Add a few drops of that to the mac and cheese and the rice, and the tastes explodes to a new dimension!! The hotness is heavenly and one bite salivates you to a different level!! Overall I would rate as - Ambience - 3.5/5 nothing exceptional, no view and the place did not have air con Food taste - 5/5!! And 1 more point for the hot sauce! Presentation - 4/5 Food quantity - 5/5 Service - 3/5 - nothing special. Which I found to be true in all the restaurants I went to in st. Thomas except Paradise point Price - 4/5 - 27 dollars for one dish + a drink is a bit too much I think even in Reggae-land!
My 440th review and what better way to write this review for one of my favorite restaurants on the island on my birthday trip. Customer service: 5 stars: our waitress was a sassy AA VI local, she was pleasant, made suggestions, and answered all of my questions. At times she didn't refill my drink as fast as I would've liked but when she did she was friendly and accomodating. I liked her a lot. Food: 5 stars: THE BEST CARIBBEAN FOOD THAT SIDE OF ST THOMAS! please don't even waste your hard earned money with gladys, you will leave pissed like we did! My ol man ordered the ox tails and they were 100% official NO COMPLAINTS! the rice and peas were delicious, cooked 2-3 minutes too long but still delicious and flavorful. The calaloo soup, omg it was out of sight! Warning you have to really like okra and spinach to like this soup. I ordered the curry goat and rice peas. NO COMPLAINTS! we had an order of conch fritters for an appetizer, they were ok. Porch light kitchen in smyrna ga by far has the best conch fritters I have ever tasted (leave it to a puerto rican to perfect the recipe, wepa!) Over all the food was THE BEST WE HAD EATEN OUR ENTIRE STAY ON THE ISLAND 4/21-4/23. Cleanliness: 4 stars: very clean joint no complaints however idk why these restaurants don't invest in A.C. they had ceiling fans running but C'mon son it's like 80 degrees outside I want to walk into atleast 69 degrees. Overall: the next time I come to st thomas and on this side of the island this will be the only place I eat. Everywhere else sucks, don't believe me? Check my reviews and you will see we tried the majority on the main strip. GREENGO'S would be another place I would dine. But for caribbean in st thomas IT GETS NO BETTER THAN CUZZIN'S!
We experienced Cuzzins today while taking a walking food tour with Aslin at St thomas food tours. What an awesome place to visit. We all had the mutton, rice and peas and plantains which I can tell you were all very good. It isn't easy to prepare goat to where I will eat it but they pulled it off. Yes it is gamey but it's local cuisine so give it a whirl. The rice and peas was awesome because I don't like peas but these were amazing. The staff was super friendly and efficient. This tour has you in and out of each place and they did an excellent job of keeping us moving. The inside of the restaurant is really shocking when you walk in. The backstreet buildings look old and worn out but then you walk in and the repurposed brick walls are magnificent. The wood ceiling and wooden fans are quite beautiful. Check it out. We will most certainly go back and try other things now that we've experienced Cuzzins today.
We were hoping to get some delicious Caribbean food at Cuzzin's. Our dinner was extremely underwhelming. I ordered the curry mutton dish with rice and plantains. The curry sauce on top of the meat was ok. However the meat itself was lukewarm. It definitely wasn't hot. It wasn't a good bite at all. The texture of the meat was not as soft as it should be. Everything else on my dish was very average. My wife ordered the curry shrimp dish. Her shrimp were mushy. So the shrimp weren't fresh and did not have much flavor. I ordered a guavaberry rum drink. It tasted good but I could hardly taste the rum. So my next drink I went with a Virgin Island summer ale. The vibe in the place is ok. Our waitress was nice. I think this is a one and done for us. The Caribbean food at the airport is better than Cuzzin's.
Cuzzin's is an amazing restaurant, definitely hit this restaurant up of you want delicious authentic Caribbean cuisine in St. Thomas. The restaurant is a little tough to find, it's north of the one way street with all the jewelry shops. The atmosphere here is pretty relaxed, it's clean, and has AC! Lunch here was absolutely delicious! Started off with conch fritters - Yum! (you have to get that in the Virgin Islands!) For entrees: the Jerked Chicken was fall-off-the-bone-juicy, loved the spices on it. I had one of the daily specials which was Conch and Shrimp, it had a flavorful kickin' curry sauce and wasn't too spicy. Loved it here! Will definitely return!
Great restaurant frequented by locals with a family atmosphere. If this place was in a normal place I'd probably give it three stars, but in St Thomas, it deserves four. The food was really delicious! I guess guava is a popular condiment in St Thomas and I have to say I am a fan, I wish it were used more at home, it's the type and amount of sweetness I want on things I eat. The meal starts with a Conch Fritters and Calaloo soup that they recommend with their house made hot sauce. Drinks were special, i had a PAINKILLER, according to them its cures all kind of pain and it cost only 6$
The curried chicken with fried plantains and vegetables was great! The chicken was so tender & flavorful I definitely recommend trying out this spot.
A must visit location in St. Thomas. The location is located off the main drag of downtown, but still very close. The most authentic food on the island. I have eaten here everytime I am here. The mutton is great and they have the best plantains ever.
Amazing food. And a great service. If you like some Caribbean food, do not miss it. Also the location is in downtown Charlotte Amalie, and walking distance from many places. I forgot the name of the server. She was also from Caribbean, and did a fantastic job. The only issue was they keep your baggage in the back if you are carrying it with you. Overall great.
Upon frequent recommendations from EVERYONE at the hotel as well as friends who've been to St. Thomas, it was only right to visit Cuzzins and find what the rave was about. I will say the restaurant lived up to the hype! The service was remarkable and the server ensured we understood everything on the menu. I ordered the Jerk chicken and it was seasoned perfectly with just enough "fire" (spice) to enjoy it. The rice and peas has a flavor that I've never tasted before and definitely left a last impression. All washed down with a nice cold Corona. Now, the Pepper sauce was home made and was extremely flavorful and had the spicy punch at the end. I will recommend Cuzzins to all my friends that will be visiting the island as they exceeded my expectations on all levels! 5 Stars all around!
We asked some of the locals where they recommended for food in Charlotte Amalie, and one of them said Cuzzin's without a doubt... and they were right! Taking off a star for the slow service (but so is service at every other USVI restaurant), but otherwise our experience was fantastic! We walked in without a problem at 2pm, which is a pretty weird time. FOOD Such good authentic Caribbean cuisine! We got the curry chicken and the fish of the day (steamed with butter sauce), with sides of mac and cheese and local stuffing. The entrees were spot on--I ate that fish to the bone! It was perfectly buttery and fresh. I wasn't a huge fan of the local stuffing (it's a spiced sweet potato mash), but my boyfriend loved it, and I couldn't get enough of the mac and cheese. Really delicious, and the portions are huge! SERVICE It was a little on the slow side, but that was true of most restaurants we went to in the USVI. Water glasses would be empty for long periods of time, and it would be a bit difficult to flag a waiter at times. That said, it seems more of a location thing than a specific Cuzzin's thing. AMBIANCE You'll be sitting pretty close to your neighbors, but it's a cute, lively location! Usually very crowded and relaxed, as is expected of island life. It feels like a rowdy family gathering around massive dishes of comfort food.
This is the best food I have tasted ever. And that's not an exaggeration. The food is authentic Caribbean cooking. The prices match the portions. It is not over priced, like a lot of places in St. Thomas. I recommend this as a MUST if visiting St. Thomas, it's located right downtown. I would call before going though, because I think the hours vary. If i ever make it back to this island I will definitely be back.
Wonderful lunch spot. Service was served with a great attitude and speed was as expected. You are on island time. No need to hurry. My wife had the chicken salad and myself the curried goat. I couldn't wait for that and it didn't disappoint!!
Great local food. Stopped for lunch and had fried shrimp with Rice, Plantains, and Mac and Cheese. Really liked the food. Large plate for a good price.
Nice ambience and friendly staff however, the food seems to be overrated. Mocktails were fantastic! We got the ginger drink and a mango virgin colada which were delish! For main course, the wings are fried wings with sauce on the side. Jerk chicken was just okay too.
Cute place, most tourists have now found it, but the restaurant still has decent food. Try the Jerked Chicken Wrap... good stuff. Very little bar atmosphere, but this place is more for the lunch crowd and the cruise ship people. Good go to spot for lunch.
Our experience was awesome The service was great - the food was amazing The drinks was great "Painkiller" - they has this hot sauce that was wonderful. Oh let's not forget the Rum cake was scrumptious!!! Totally recommend this place to all!!! I can't wait to return to try more dishes
The atmosphere was pretty and clean. Service was subpar. Took us awhile to get drink refills or our waitress to come and check on us once we got our entrees. Also, we didn't get what we ordered. I liked the main entree, but the sides were not that great.
I was so disgusted and cant believe I still paid and left a tip after I seen mice not a mouse multiple mice running around this restaurant and the staff acted as if I was crazy for bringing it to their attention and the bartender, said that me and my party are from out of town and the mice are locals that is some sick shit and yes I am cussing because this is a health hazard and you need to shut them down, I will never eat food on ST Thomas Island, I am telling you I am still sick to my stomach. Only good think is I might lose a few pounds because I don't want to eat food I lost my appetite
This review is based on customer service experienced at lunchtime at the restaurant. The only meal I consumed was conch fritters which was good. My waiter was a bald middle age guy and restaurant only had 1 other patron lunchtime. Ordered water for my companion and Dark & Stormy for myself. The Dark & Stormy arrived but had to stand up and walk towards bar counter because he simply forgot the water and left it on the counter for approximately 12 minutes (Should've been my first warning). I ordered conch fritters to eat-in - which did arrive quickly and good which explains the two stars. Ordered jerk chicken to go w/specific sides which i paid for and upon arriving at my destination I opened the take-out container to reveal a some form of burger (not sure it was beef - does this place sell veggie/garden burgers) with fries? WTF?? Not what I wanted and had to throw it out but too far away from restaurant to return to request replacement or fix my order. Suggestions for other patrons - Avoid middle-age waiter with bald head (lunchtime) as doesn't pay too much attention to his job or your order. Maybe he works better when busy but when empty - results are inferior. If you order take-out - please inspect your container prior to departure (as I'm sure the person ordering the burger was also annoyed at the outcome). Drink was fine. Waiter did give me a take-out container for pepper sauce but couldn't use it as didn't have entree I wanted. NOTE - Sometimes people make mistakes and I acknowledge no one is perfect. So, if my review comes across harsh, it is because the place was empty so seems apathy applied more than too busy or multi-tasking.
