My son's car windows would not roll up after we had another mechanic "repair" the window motors a few months back. Courtesy gave us a fair estimate, guaranteed the parts and labor and finished the work in 24 hours. They were upfront and honest and I will definitely recommend their service and will be using them again!

Let me just say, I'm not a car guy. Like most people I rely on mechanics to ID and fix problems in my car. I brought my car in here to have some work done around the spark plugs. My usual shop (which has 4.5 stars on yelp compared to this place with 2.5 stars should have been a red flag) had done a diagnostic while fixing another issue the month before but quoted me a "$100 more" for the work than courtesy (hindsight is 20/20 and $100 would've save me a lot of hassle and money) so I went with them. I told this shop what was going on with my car, what needed to be fixed and what the other shop said.
They did the repair the other shop had recommended to me and $700 later (vs the $400 they quoted me to start) gave me the car back.
When they did so they said their computer said the issue was still not resolved and offered to give me THEIR diagnostic for the regular price of $150 more dollars.
I declined. I'm going back to my other shop. This was a moment when a shop that truly values repeat business and putting the customer first would have said "hey this guy just paid us $700 for a repair that didn't fix the issue. Let's do him a solid and figure out what's still wrong."
Instead this place hard lined me saying that diagnostic would cost me more, no matter what, doesn't matter how much I've already spent with them. They made me feel dumb for taking in another (higher rated) companies diagnostic to them in the first place.
But if it's a dumb thing to do why did you let me do it? Again, I'm not a car guy.
Then on top of all that on the receipt for the work they did they wrote a super defensive VERY long message that basically described how they didn't do anything wrong instead of just being normal and writing down the parts and labor costs.
No, you guys didn't do anything "wrong". You just suck at making me feel like I was treated decently and were great at making me feel like I don't want to come back. There were so many opportunities to gain my future business and I was already paying them close to a grand. And, not shockingly, when I tried to explain that to them, they were super defensive (like they have herd it before).
This is not a customer first auto care center. I won't be returning or recommending them to anyone I know and I've lived in Portland my whole life.
Update: 2 days later my car is significantly worse off then when I brought it in.
Update 3: took my car to another mechanic and they pop'd the hood and the first thing they found was the freaking hose they "replaced" either untouched and still broken/ or new but unattached / or new attached and then cut in half in the middle. The bottom line; this customer needed his vehicle diagnosed correctly and didn't want to pay for it. He claimed "Another" shop had diagnosed it, we recommend we do the testing which would have cost $150, he declined to do this.
His vehicle had the check engine light on and was running poorly. He and his brother specified the parts they wanted replaced. We were clear with him that after the replacement parts were put in, it may or may not fix his problem and we were not telling him he needed this. He still wanted to proceed.
After disassembly we found some other parts that needed to be replaced, the brothers choose to replace some of them, NOT ALL (this explains the picture of the broken vent hose that we were told to NOT change by his brother). All work was done at less than the agreed upon price.
It did not fix his problem and now he wanted us to diagnose the issue. Except he did not want to pay for this and got extremely upset when I reminded him of our conversation during the invoice write up.
I asked for a copy of the diagnosis from the other shop, wouldn't provide it. I asked to call them, no, didn't want me to do that. I suspect it just had a code read and called it a diagnostic, it's not.
Wouldn't you think he'd be mad at the 4.5 star shop that diagnosed his car incorrectly and give them a 1 star review?
We also keep notes on a customers invoice when they choose to not do our recommendations so we have a record of what happened, in-case we end up in a libel situation, as this clearly is.Mar 22, 2019Previous reviewLet me just say, I'm not a car guy. I would not recommend this business because of disrespectful communication on multiple occasions from both guys working there. I had my car fixed there once and will not return. soon after, my check engine light was back on, I had an issue come up again and the guy on the phone could not give me an answer as I was inquiring about the general labor costs while comparing auto shops. Instead, as I was talking, he cut me off, saying "just bring it in" and as I was still talking he hung up. Seems like the 2 guys working there despise their job or talking to people who need to get their car fixed.

An interesting response. This person called complaining his "Check Engine" lamp came on after 2 months. I told him if he brought it in we would check it for free and if the problem was anything we had worked on we'd cover it in full. He made an appointment for the very next day and didn't show up. We wish him well and still extend the offer to look at it for free.

Extending a big thanks to Jeff and crew of Courtesy Auto Center. My clutch was failing and I knew I couldn't make it home. I pulled in just before 5 pm, and Jeff gave an initial assessment based on my observations. He was nice enough to pass a little time with me while I waited for someone to pick me up. I authorized a diagnosis and, by 9 am the next morning, Jeff called me with the full diagnosis and estimate of repair. Because he knew that I do some of my own mechanic work and that my father is a mechanic, Jeff recommended that I relay the diagnosis and estimate to my dad for a second opinion. Jeff's transparency and courtesy made me feel completely comfortable with giving him the green light on the repairs. By 4 pm that day, my truck was done ... and the total cost was less than estimated!
I am grateful for Jeff's customer service, his consideration to me in getting a second opinion, and the Center's quick and affordable auto care. Thanks guys!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

This place is a scam. Tried to overcharge and tried to replace parts that were in great condition. The dealer was even cheaper than they were.
Edit: Was super confused and offended as to why my race and sex would have anything to do with my experience at a mechanic? His response was "sorry you were offended... People get offended by everything these days. " Apparently they can't run an honest business or even apologize. Good luck with everything dude!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Is it bad that we were upfront and honest regarding a technical service bulletin about the complaint the customer had with the vehicle? Doesn't seem like a scam to me.
We never discussed the problems with this vehicle with a female, only a male.
We were authorized to do up to $150 in testing and only charged $100, this doesn't seem like over charging.
We discussed the history of the vehicle with the gentleman due to the service bulletin, he didn't know and said it was a mutually borrowed vehicle. We explained this bulletin is about complications that can and do happen (we've seen this first hand) and they can be expensive to fix. If this did happen there is no turning back. We felt the customer should know this before the disassembly. He chose to not disassemble and go to a dealership.
The chances of this happening at a dealer is the same. Fortunately he didn't have the problem, if we would have done the repair the outcome would have been the same.
We never discussed replacing any parts until after the disassembly and inspection to know what was needed.
We believe this was a language issue due to the ethnicity of the customer and limited English. We truly wish him well. - Blair F.Portland, OR01Feb 18, 2020
I've been here 2-3 times and they're my go to spot for quick repairs. They do a great job and the price is very reasonable. Chris is great and he keeps you in the loop the entire time your car is in their hands. You really can't ask for more when looking for auto repair. They're honest, knowledgeable and all around good people.

Went in for an oil change and a turn signal bulb because the location was convenient. Spent $700 on "emission problems".
Then They "mistakenly" advised that the car would not pass DEQ with faulty cruise control. I called DEQ and confirmed the info was a "mistake".
I won't go back. Buyer beware!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

I miss the days when a customer would just call or come in to discuss a situation, oh well.
When we did the research on this gentleman's cruise control problem we called the DEQ area manager "Monty" and discussed this with him. He is the one that gave us the information that this would need to be repaired to pass DEQ and caused this "mistake". We have since called the area manager back and he verified that he indeed was wrong to tell us this. If this customer would like the DEQ repair shop hotline we will gladly supply it, or even come by and we'll set up a joint call so he doesn't have to just take our word for it.
This could have been easily handled with a phone call. We don't deserve a one star review over this. We are saddened that we lost a fine customer, we truly wish him well. - Jesse R.Portland, OR56152Apr 4, 2013
I originally took my car to another place in Portland, a well known place that has good ratings. They did a thorough inspection, and some minor maintenance, but one of the things they said I needed was brake work, specifically new pads, rotors and calipers. They quoted my $875 for the work. Well, Ive done work on my brakes myself, and know that parts range about $250-$300, so they were going to charge me $500++ for a couple hours labor?
I live down the street from Courtesy and spoke to Chris on the phone and asked for a quote. He said he was surprised the calipers needed to be replace, asked me to bring it in so he could look. I brought it in the next morning.
They were very nice and after looking at it, said calipers were fine, but I did need new pads and rotors, quoted me $380. I agreed, and Chris gave me a ride home, and when work was done, came back to get me.
They were super friendly, professional, and saved me $500. Courtesy Auto has a new customer!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Casey H.Portland, OR06Feb 18, 2015
This place is shady. I took my car there because I had broken down next door. They looked and indicated that it was going to take over a grand to fix and there was no guarantee it would solve the problem. When I mentioned I was taking it to my mechanic they started asking questions about who my mechanic was and acting weird. Picked it up and surprisingly was hit with a four hundred dollar bill for changing spark plugs and them trying to assess the issue twice the expected amount. Paid the bill, took it to my mechanic who fixed the entire issue for less than two hundred. I almost got taken for a grand! Stay away from this place.

An interesting surprising review.
This gentleman's wife broke down across the street and came to us with the vehicles check engine lamp flashing, running poorly and asked us to test her car for the problem. We do not work on anyones car without authorization with an understanding of the costs involved and if anymore costs arise we call first.
This vehicle has many problems and there is a certain testing order you have go through to diagnose the car. We discussed with the customer and he gave his approval. He chose to stop when we gave him a "Worse case scenario" with our findings. We would rather do this before the vehicle is disassembled and the customer is then over a barrel. If this costs us business, so be it.
We asked about his mechanic and was told his neighbor next door did his work at home. We told the customer his mechanic was more than welcome to call and ask anything hoping to save the extra expense doubling up on work, that was all. This doesn't seem weird to us with a free offer to help even though he was taking the car away.
We will never be price competitive with an unlicensed and uninsured backyard mechanic.
He authorized everything we did at the amount stated. - Bill Q.Portland, OR05Nov 9, 2012First to Review
Took my car in for a 20 dollar oil change and ended up paying another 430 dollars. I was called and told my car was ready to be picked up . It barely would run and I thought I would have to have it towed home . They said they wanted to diagnos it again I said no way in hell, why did you call me and tell me it was ready to go. I ended up taking it to another service place to have it repaired after I paid another $185 to fix what they (Coutesy Auto) screwed up. I was told the problem was caused by something Courtesy did. I called back Courtest Auto to see if they would help out with the added cost and got the "its not their problem " I won't go into more detail because they is more to the story , but I would advise people to avoid this place.

I have had 2 vehicles worked on here. Both had to go back in to have the same work done again. Both had faulty parts go out within a year. One of them within two months. They always blame it on the supplier, but don't change suppliers. They also tried to blame another shop for something they didn't even touch. They laughed off our inconvenience both times and refused to pay to have them towed back to their shop to have the repairs made again. They also refused to pay for a rental car while they fixed there mistake. I would never go back and am going to make sure none of my contacts ever do either.

No good deed goes unpunished!
1st) This mans first problem was a wrongly manufactured axle, which we proved to the manufacturer with pictures. We paid the additional $200 for a factory axle and took care of him completely. We offered to pay for any vehicle rental he needed, the rental company would not accept him as a customer, this is beyond our control.
2nd) We installed a radiator a little less than 1 year ago and he was told by another local repair shop it was defective. We told him we would cover it completely if so. We picked up the vehicle and inspected it in our shop. We found the radiator was NOT defective but someone had removed the drain plug and damaged the radiator putting it back in. This man had a water pump installed by this other repair shop two weeks ago, the first step is to drain the radiator. It didn't go a year, then strip itself.
To help this person with his damaged radiator, we asked for a favor from our supplier, with them knowing fully well this was damaged, they replaced his radiator as a favor to us.
3rd) This is the review he posted in return for the favor. We will continue to help our customers in everyway we can.
