This is a long over due review. I've been coming here for many years, now having my 2nd BMW serviced; I finally had the opportunity to share my experience.
Without an appointment, I came in to have them look at a coolant light reading the levels were low on my Z4; hoping it just needed to be filled. While I wasn't pleased that I needed a new radiator and hesitated; after they took a photo of the cracked radiator to prove it was indeed cracked, I reluctantly knew it should be done.
I had the few hours to wait while the part was delivered and the car fixed. What I didn't expect was a very nice, clean, well decorated upstairs lounge with a separate office-conference room. I thoroughly enjoyed having the space to myself.
While I waited for my vehicle, I had the chance to observe (hearing) several customers downstairs who came in for their vehicles. Jon, the Service Mgr who sits in the front office, handled everything so delicately, listening to clients who would share even their personal life situations (I'm sure he feels like a psychologist) and having them leave satisfied not just because of the vehicle that was serviced, but because of the attention and authenticity that he immediately builds trust with those who just need to be heard. That's what I witnessed today and the reason for my post. We can go to other BMW service locations, but we keep coming back because of the human touch.
Thank you Jon.
Ps- the restroom feels like walking into a Neiman Marcus boutique! So clean and love the gorgeous white and black wall featured! - Also, they have the best furry friends!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michelle O.Oceanside, CA173574104Nov 8, 2020
I've been going to CMW for the last 3-4 years, since I came back to the mainland from Hawaii & appreciate their expertise in servicing BMWs & no nonsense approach. I've taken my car to local dealerships for routine oil changes & maintenance in the past & they always tried to make me buy extra services that I didn't really need.
CMW is straight up & they even provide shuttle service to me when I drop my car off, since my office is nearby.
I can't say enough about how this business has provided EXCEPTIONAL customer service. I don't have a fancy M3, just a basic 328i but I feel like they take care of my car as if it were a high performance car.
Definitely recommend this business if you need a place that has experience & expertise making sure your Beamer runs @ optimal performance! You guys are the BEST!!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 27, 2018
The service is a joke.
I left a message (their voicemail is totally funny if you will it to be: the message says something like their staff are taking selfies which is why they can't answer the phone) --- so at first, Yea I'll roll with that. But after leaving a message in the beginning of the day (9am pst), I finally get a call back after 5pm pst and the voicemail left was something like "hey, sorry for getting back to you so late- we're a one man shop."
- it was around 5:20pm when someone, or rather "the only one" got back to me only to leave me that weak message and then not even answer the phone when I tried calling back. The interval between the message left and calling back was less than 5 minutes.
- listen, I'm not trying to be a dick.. But when you combine a message "trying" to be funny, but the follow through is an actual joke, where's the incentive at all to commit your vehicle for service here.
- moreover, I've used CMW in the past, several times... I prefer The Auto Clinic over CMW, and unquestionably after this recent experience.
My how things have changed over the years. Think I'm lying? call them.... Listen to their default message if/when no one picks up and see how fast they return your call. And if it's different, they changed it since. Needless to say, I won't even take my car to them anymore. For that i am sure.
- I'm so pissed about how this went down, make no question I even saved the voicemail left on my phone to substantiate the claim I'm making... There was literally NO ONE there except one guy from 9 to 5pm. These jokers are lame. And anyone entrusting their Bimmer with them is insane.
What a joke.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Don,
You are 100% correct. We do try to kid around on the phone and in person. I hire writers based on personality, so when things on your car break and we know they will, we try to help ease the pain a little by being a friend. This is one reason why we are better than the rest. Does that mean we are without fault? Of course not. We are human, and we make mistakes just like any other human. In a business that is completely unpredictable at times, mistakes happen. I can tell you after thirty plus years in this business, I have discovered one simple fact: NO ONE LIKES TO GET THEIR CAR FIXED. Car repairs suck, so at least the person you interact with should totally not suck. So yes, we try to lighten the mood a little. Life is full of dry, serious and unfriendly people (the kind that get offended by the word suck), but none of them work for me. CMW customers know they can make an appointment online. They also know they can simply come in and we will get right on their car. They know we are the very best at what we do, employ the best techs, have a better warranty than everyone, offer the highest value and yes, do take great selfies ;)

I had an engine light came on my BMW dash board when I drive it to San Francisco, and I came back to Irvine without any engine problem.
I took my BMW 528i to Coast Motor Werk and they took care of it by taking my car to a BMW dealership, who fixed the dash-board warning light by readjusting the fuel sensor system.
The CMW did all these works free-of-charge. I felt very thankful and felt I will keep using this BMW repair shop and will recommend all my friends who has BMW or other German cars.
They are excellent and very capable people who deserve 5-star rating.
The guys at CMW are very sincere and capable guys.
They provide estimates for the repairs really needed only and quote the best price in the town.
They are just a bunch of decent folks you want to get familiar with and you want to take your cars if they need repair or maintenance.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Xuan L.Irvine, CA18611Aug 20, 2019
Called the store before going in and was told that their price for maintenance is about the same as the Mini dealer. Since this place is much closer to work with good Yelp reviews, I brought my car to the shop. I was told that I need an oil change for $120, break fluid flush for $170, and an inspection for more than $220. I was shocked, the oil change alone is 50% more than the dealer price ($79). The dealer has an inspection package for around the same price but that includes an oil change. Their prices are just outrageous. I left immediately and called the dealer and found out that I just had a break fluid flush 7000 miles ago (it should be every 30k ish).
Seeing other great reviews makes me wonder if they quoted me crazy prices and unneeded services because I am a woman and they assume I don't know anything about cars.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hello Xuan,
Thank you taking the time to post your review. I am very sorry you did not have a great experience. Unfortunately miscommunication is to blame. It sounds like we did not communicate our service very clearly. I think you may have been misinformed by the dealership also. Service intervals and their descriptions on MINI vehicles can be confusing even to people in the business.
First let me clarify the "oil change" "oil service" confusion. "Oil changes" are what places like Jiffy Lube does, they drain the oil and replace the oil filter. That is all, nothing more and nothing less. Dealerships started advertising "Oil changes" as a loss leader in order to compete with the oil change shops. In my opinion "oil changes" are fine as long as a competent knowledgeable mechanic inspects the vehicle completely every 6-12 months. I just think it makes the most sense to combine the 2 as MINI intended. Quick "oil change" shops do not have mechanics trained in what to look for on MINI and BMW vehicles. So I would not recommend an "oil change" as a peace of mind service.
When a vehicle comes in for the loss leader "oil change," the dealership pushes their commissioned mechanics and service writers to recommend and sell as much work as possible, as I am sure you will soon see. However the dealership's "inspection package that includes an oil change" you mentioned is simply an "oil service." It is just like our oil service, except our technicians and writers are not incentivized to sell work in order to offset the lack of profit from the oil change. The only service MINI recommends for your vehicle is the "oil service." It is described in your owner's manual. At CMW we only do "oil services" not "oil changes" - that is why we charge $120. Every vehicle gets a full comprehensive inspection. We top off fluids, air up the tires, reset the tire and service systems among other things. Any repairs or services we recommend will be explained, an estimate in writing will be given to you, and we will gladly show you the failure. You also mentioned the brake fluid flush, and I am sure our price is better than the dealership's when comparing same services. However, the dealership again misinformed you about the brake fluid. It is true that we at CMW don't have your records from the dealership and can't obtain them as they belong to you, but your vehicle tracks the brake fluid flush services if done properly. The technician is supposed to reset the interval in the vehicle when doing the service. This restarts a counter and at 24 months, the brake fluid flush will be due again. You don't have to take our word for it, as again you will find it in your owner's manual. The brake fluid flush is due every 2 years regardless of how many miles traveled. Brake fluid absorbs moisture, and this is why it must be changed. So the dealership saying every 30k ish is completely false.
And regarding the "inspection for more than $220:" This is another example of bad communication and confusing descriptions. I am sorry we did not do a better job here as well. The service we recommended was actually the "vehicle check service." This service is not an oil service and does not include an oil change. It does include many other items and is done when the indicator on the dash says the service is due, not when we decide. It is again in your owner's manual. I do want to extend my sincere apologies for the lack of proper communication. If you ever need anything, please feel free to contact me at the HB shop.

Fantastic experience at coast motor. Dropped off my car at 2. Two hours later, all jobs were done (engine oil and brake fluid). If these jobs are done by bmw dealer, it normally takes 1 or 2 days. Jon was super cool. Will recommend and comeback to this place.

If you have a BMW do not TAKE IT ANYWHERE BUT HERE!!!! John will go out of his way to fix your car at a reasonable price and if it requires a major repair and is still under warranty he will work tirelessly to get as much of the repair covered by the warranty as possible. I have never in my life trusted a mechanic or a mechanic shop. I 100% trust John and the guys at coast motor werk. I honestly don't know what i would do without you guys. Thank you so much for being a trust worthy shop.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 30, 2019Previous reviewI took my car to Coast Motor Werk in Irvine for the first time a few weeks ago. I had been to the Costa Mesa location in the pass and had great service . Jon helped me in Irvine he was great. My car was serviced in a few hours. I had a tire with a nail they plugged it for free. My car is also due for some other things so Jon gave me itemized list with quotes and briefly explained to me when these needed to be taken care of. I really LOVE Coast Motor Werk i always feel well taken care of which is so rare as a single woman when dealing with mechanics or car issues of any sort. Thank you guys again.

Awesome shop. Called in because I had a series of coolant hoses blow on my 2007 BMW 530i. I wanted to get everything taken care of and any old hoses replaced as this would have been the third hose to fail within a week. Took it in and they replaced the problematic one same day. Unfortunately, another cooling component failed, but Coast Motor Werk took it right back, diagnosed the cooling system extensively, and produced a list of components that were likely to fail. They even covered labor costs to put them in since they weren't able to catch it the first time. All in all, good trustworthy shop. Car hasn't leaked a drop of coolant since. Plan to take it back to deal with oil leaks now.

These guys are a god-send for this Mini Cooper owner. Got tired of the runaround fro Irvine Mini and found these guys. They diagnosed several problems very quickly and got us up and running for a fraction of what the dealer would have cost us. They're laid back, honest and have a very clean shop.
Mini Coopers are technical little beasts. It's good to know these guys are here. Highly recommend their service!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mina H.CA, CA9321389Jul 24, 2018
Ahhh! My tail light went out!!
It's mid-week (almost), got a road trip coming up, I'm at work wondering when I'll be able to get to it, and how much it's going to cost.
I called in and John advised that I bring my car in. I was there an hour later and omg, they took care of me right away!
The guys were quick, friendly, and totally went above and beyond. Seriously. No one wants to deal w a broken car or car drama but if you find yourself in that situation, I would recommend CMW. Thanks a bunch John and team!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
