Had signed my kids for this math school because I was worried about quality of math instructions provided by our school district in elementary school. After a year of Classic Math school I can see that my alarm about math ed in CA public school (or rather an absence of it) was completely justified.
This school should be attended by math teachers and school administrators to learn how to TEACH MATH.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dasha T.San Francisco, CA251819Dec 18, 2020
In K I thought my daughter was too young to understand math.
In 1st grade I decided that math was not one of her strengths. I explained to her over and over simple addition and subtraction, but she was looking through me and not getting how to solve it. She also started saying she does not like math, which for me was heartbreaking as I love math.
In 2nd grade I got especially concerned when SFUSD moved into the full distance learning model for 2020. During the day I need to work full time, so I can't be a tutor, plus I was getting too emotional with my math explanations. One of my friends recommended signing her up for a math course with Classic Math School as now it was available online. We will not need to drive from SF to East Bay or Palo Alto for in-person class, so I decided to give it a try.
After 15 classes in the first half of the year, I see a huge improvement. I keep remarking to my husband that I can't believe she improved so much and how wrong I was about math not being her strength. It is her strength. I still help our daughter with math homework, but she "gets it" now. Also, she started saying that she loves math. Kids changing their mind so fast =)
Now, I only wish there would be a similar program to teach kids how to write, as she needs some help with that as well.
I would recommend Classic Math School to everyone especially now during the distance learning era. I don't like pandemic. I really hope we would go back to in-person learning soon. However, I am so thankful we discovered Classic Math School because of the pandemic.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Tetyana T.Palo Alto, CA01Mar 16, 2012First to Review

This review is for the Palo Alto school. Our son attended Classic Math School last year and the Math Camp this summer. We are very pleased with the school and the director. As another Yelper mentioned, the teachers are true mathematicians (not college students as found in other afterschool math programs). They teach the kids how to think mathematically- logic, spacial thinking, reasoning, etc. The kids are challenged and learn something new each week. We highly recommend them.

This is now the 4th year that my son has attended the Palo Alto site for Classic Math School, and as a parent I couldn't be happier. My son enjoys Math, enjoys learning Math, and takes pride in his Math ability. It's a two hour, once a week class wiith homework. The classes have good conceptual content, less than 10 students per class and are held during the evening. He has had the same teacher all four years, and I am glad for it. Without this parallel strand of Math activity, I'm sure I would be stressed out and would get caught up in the local Math wars in the school district. As it is, I still need to sit with or be near my son for a couple of hours on the weekend while he is working on his Math to make sure he does his homework (he is only 8 years old), but I'm not worried about the quality of his Math instruction or his attitude toward Math. We have had a great experience with this school.
