Chen's seems to have a revolving door wait staff so we'll probably never again see the curt, barely civil and "I'm too good for this job" attitude sported by the waitress that we encountered today. Best to concentrate on the food which can be delicious.
Wednesday being a triple holiday/holy day we thought Chen's would be a pleasant and soothing lunch respite to celebrate Saint Valentine's Day which was also Ash Wednesday. Well, it wasn't. Yet it wasn't the worst.
Choosing Chen's also to have their lunch specials during the Lunar New Year celebration, we were told in Belushian bruskness, "no lunch today". "No tea for you", (it's against the law [??really?]) , also dirty dishes were not taken away. Yet the Aromatic Fish filet was very, very good so the irritating accompaniments were just one (or two or three) of those things.
Another deluter of delight was the loudmouthed party at another table telling grossly inappropriate stories of his midwestern childhood. Notwithstanding his implicating he had a career in Hollywood, I felt no desire to have his autograph. Chen's never lifted it head out of Hopper's doldrums.
Yup, that fish really hit the spot.Helpful 50Thanks 14Love this 43Oh no 6Oct 28, 2023Previous reviewFifth star restored. While avoiding egg foo young, Chicken and spinach and king pan dishes were very tasty. This evening, every staff member is thoughtful and welcoming. Leftovers delicious on day two.
Apr 1, 2023Previous reviewWhile enjoying our last visit to Chen's, it still bothers me that Egg Foo Young recipe had been changed. it was not an omelette. It was a different consistency. I enquired and was told that it contained flour, onion etc. Tasty, yet Egg Foo Young is my go to dish. Had this change been identified on the menu I might have ordered something else. Better to increase the price if the recent high coast of eggs had been the reason. I don't know if allergies would be of concern but I'm sure other people would want to know. Service, as usual, was was impeccable.
Oct 10, 2022Previous reviewBf totally on board with dinner in the restaurant. Everything comfort food and delicious. Staff thoughtful and delightful. Only thing needed is a bell to tell one to stop eating..
Sep 19, 2022Previous reviewTake out order for Egg Foo Young came with a very generous side container of brown sauce with loads of vegetables. But bf didn't like his Szechuan pork, it was not spicy enough. There was plenty of leftovers which made a delicious dinner the following night. Heating everything together and adding my preferred brands of soy and oyster sauce was the needed touch. Bf enjoyed the second dinner much more.
I had been wanting some Hot and Sour soup which they offer for at $8.99 for two servings. Hot and Sour soup is always my remedy to clear stuffy sinuses but had I been in need of cleared passages, I'd not have been relieved. So I guess spicy was not on the menu that night. I found everything that was ordered, complete, in the well packed bag. The only missing item was a fortune in the extra cookie. Some would deduct a star for that. Maybe. For bf's unspicy dinner initially he said one star but enjoyed the leftover version, still with no hot ingredients added. Even if truly a 3.5, I still found Chen's to reliably evoke memories of my childhood Brooklyn treat.
But someone please tell me what happened to hot mustard. Never see the fiery kind I didn't appreciate when I was little.Mar 21, 2019Previous reviewPerhaps a change of ownership? New menu. There are less menu choices now, but boba has been added. I will try boba someday, maybe. My favorite, vegetable egg foo young, seemed simplified. Still tasty, but... the variety of vegetables and sutbtly of the sauce is not quite the same. Bf liked his spicy pork dish. We finished everything, a good sign or smaller quantity? No take home tonight.
However, pleasant and attentive service counts for much. Our waiter and another we observed, are pure silk. Early evening and families stream in. Kid talk is subdued and cheerful. Table for seven? No problem. One foot in the past, one in the present.
As we sat near the telephone, listening to the incoming orders, I mused a new plot for Columbo. Oh, it is 2019 outside. Woulda been a good episode.Dec 14, 2018Previous reviewThe take out order from last night included a tasty vegetable soup, which it turns out, had a nice variety of vegetables. With added tofu, it made a delicious dinner tonight. I'm hoping the next visit be totally back on track
Dec 13, 2018Previous reviewChen's circulated a flyer with coupons for take out. I notice that in general, a good number of dissatisfied reviews involve take out and delivery. So what occurred isn't too surprising. We ordered the same dishes that we had in the restaurant recently. No comparison in quality. Scarce vegetables, no brown sauce, tough beef. So for two poor quality spring rolls they tarnished their excellent reputation. Makes no business sense to me.
Oct 27, 2018Previous reviewKnowing that Î've been çraving Brooklynese-Cantonese comfort food bf suggested dinner at my favorite in that catagory, Chen's. He lovès the Long Beach rarity of a private parking lot. Since many multi-child families are here, that might be à common plus-factor. That, and the fact that the tasty portions are huge.
Seat yourself. Attention to the table is prompt, ice water and hot tea, menus. Sèrvice is great. After adequate time to peruse the mènu's pages, ÿour order is taken and soon a big bowl of rice is on your table. I had vegetable egg foo young. Better than the foo young of childhood (which I like to duplicate myself with a thickened gravy[?]), theirs is łighter and loaded with vegetables. The spicy Szechuan shreded pork was also delicious.
Memories of thè upstà irs spot în downtown Brooklyn become alive. I à lways sat by a window watching the Fulton Strèèt crowds below. No red paper lanterns on the tables, no dance floor...but close enough.Aug 31, 2017Previous reviewChinese restaurants were exotic when I was little. I have many memories of them in New York City (Cantonese was the only show in town) before they revamped the mold into Szechuan, Hunan et al. This is a return to those earlier times of darkened, red lanterned, foo younged and chow meined, pre-MSG days. Sure I could pick. I've had better egg rolls. Hot and sour soup with less thickening (was it corn starch?).
But when the main courses arrived. Could the little emperor Pu Yi had better in the Forbidden City? I can't imagine! Plenty to doggie bag, I would have enjoyed more of the MSG free yumminess there, had I not been with a group of amateur thespians watching their "stage weight". I also salute the waitress who handled the demands of the group with great aplomb. - Feb 2, 2024
I give up .
As a long time LB resident , over 30 years , I have tried Chens at least a dozen times .
I only tried them again , due to all our good Chinese restaurants are disappearing.
The food is adequate, it's not the Chinese food I've had in the past . I will admit I've only had the fried rice , egg foo young , and some of the chicken dishes , generally I do takeout .
They do GIVE a lot of food with take out ,the fried rice is overflowing in the box , the service is quick , I would not be aware of ambiance because they may have changed since I was inside over 15 years ago.
Do not think I'll be going back !Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Jan 1, 2024
I was here a couple of weeks ago
With GF looking to give this place a shot. Always passed this place but never went in. We got there, and as we waited to get seated, the waitress came and just pointed at a table and told us, "There." We sat down, and about a minute later, she came with the menu and left. Not a minute passed by, and she came back asking if we were ready.
We told her we needed more time and she left, this time for a few minutes. She came back and finally took our order. We ordered walnut shrimp, rice, and if I recall, one of the beef entrées. We got our drinks and maybe 15 minutes later we got our food. The food was actually pretty good. Beef was great, shrimp was cooked just right, and the fried rice was on point. Once we were done, we asked for boxes to go because it was a lot of food. We got the check and signed. We got up, and as we walked out the door, the lady had come back and asked my GF if she was going to tip. This was unbeknownst to me at that particular moment because I walked out first and proceeded to look for my keys and unlock my car as I had parked directly in front of the business. Once I put the food in the car and looked back, I asked what happened, and it turns out the lady had peer pressured her into tipping. I did not go back inside because my gf said to let it go at that point. Now, I will not discuss US tipping culture here on Yelp, but as far as I know, you tip people for going BEYOND service standards. You do not beg for tips for just doing the job. The food may have been good, but the aggressive tip shakedown made this visit uncomfortable. It may be a very long time before I give these guys another chance.Helpful 6Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 1 - Mar 16, 2024
Oh yes! I know some have said that Chen's isn't as it used to be. But as a first timer here I can't see how it could get any better! This is the Cantonese food of my childhood memories when mom and dad would take us to Canton Kitchen in Monrovia! Staff here at Chen's was just as nice and the food absolutely as good. I ordered the New York Style (bean sprout based instead of noodle based) Chow Mein with shrimp. Some restaurants call this chow mein and the noodle based version lo mein. But whatever you call it, call me to help eat it! I just love the lightness and the crunch. I paired it with the BBQ Spare Ribs which were perfectly cooked, tender and delicious! I only wish Chen's had been heavier handed with the sauce but I'm a saucy girl. Others might love it just as is. Chen's just hit the top of my list for Cantonese food and I can't wait to return again!

Chen's is an American style cantonese Chinese restaurant on Broadway I long beach. There's almost never a crowd. They do mostly a takeout business. Fairly comprehensive menu. I had the s'echuan shredded pork. It wasn't really shredded but in small pieces. I ordered medium spicy but it came mild. Lots of onions which I love, soft and tender.
Service was friendly and helpful. They refilled my water glass twice without my asking.
Ambiance- chef's seriously needs to be renovated as it looks like it has not been upgraded in 20 or more years.
Prices are reasonable. My dish was $13.50 and the portion was huge.
Easy street parking on broadway.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nancy C.Long Beach, CA793337Mar 31, 2024
Oh, Chen's, I have been a supporter since Mae was at the helm. This is the Lemon Chicken with the batter completely mushy and falling off. I have never called to complain since 1996 and they backed the chef. Yes, the chicken is quality but I wanted something crunchy not soggy.

Been going to Chen's for years. Food is always good and deliveries are always fast! We really enjoy the honey walnut chicken, combination lo mein and fried rice. Wonton soup is a must when you're sick. Highly recommend!

This has always been my go to spot for Chinese food for at least 10 years. However this last time the food was just okay. Not bad but not great the way it use to be. I will try one more time to see if that was a fluke or has something changed. Not sure if they are using new ingredients or a new chef.

Used to be sooooo much better. Sad! We ordered tea. Didn't get it. Appetizers were cold except for the mystery foil wrapped chicken. Beef dish was only warm but the chicken dish was nice and hot. The saving grace was the almond chicken. Asked for a napkin. Didn't get it. Waited a looooong time for the check. Saw the waitress chatting with a coworker. Very disappointing visit.

Best Chinese food in the Rogue Valley. We drive down from Grants Pass to eat here.My husband had the chow fun, he said it was very good and fresh. My mother in law loved here Mongolian beef lunch special and it was very tender. I had the lunch Generals chicken. A lot of food for a good price
