6/3/2014We've been living at 836 Bergen for more than 3 years now. We first moved into a studio apartment on the 4th floor and a year later moved into a 1-bedroom apartment, because we wanted a bigger place.
1) Our apartment is spacious (plenty of space for a couple and a dog), sunny and we have a great view of New York City skyline (I believe you can get that view only on the 4th and 5th floors). A lot of closet space.
2) The building is very clean and well maintained - it looks as good as the year we moved in. The only area that needs improvement is the roof top (artificial grass on the roof wasn't secured last year, so it doesn't look that good now).
3) Our super, Sergio, is great. He is in the building 6 days a week. I once had a problem with a bath tub and placed a request via an online form (which I found convenient) after 11 pm, and Sergio was in my apartment by 8 am the next morning to fix it. He is very friendly and even our super shy dog adores him.
4) We have really friendly neighbors.
5) Like anywhere in Prospect Heights, the rent is not cheap. But our rent went up by only about $100-150 a year, which is not too bad.
6) I wish the doormen was there 24/7 (there is one doorman, 10 am-8pm Mon-Sat).
Overall, I found that the management team is very responsive, they maintain the building well and the neighborhood is great (a lot of coffee shops and restaurants). - Chris M.Manhattan, NY4 friends18 reviews58 photos
9/13/2018I agree with Melissa H that they truly are slumlords. They sell their market-rate properties as luxury, advertise fantastic amenities, etc, and deliver on none of them as the moment anything goes wrong, they promptly ignore tenants. I've been a resident of The Alexey in Brooklyn at 635 4th Avenue / 175 19th street and management is absolutely unresponsive to tenant issues.
When they were trying to rent the place, we were told all amenities would be completed by the end of July and that the building had central heat and air. Neither of these turned out to be true.
Our central heating/air turned out to be obscenely large PTAC units that are, literally, the cheapest and oldest models on the market and they broke down completely within one month. Prior to them breaking down, they leaked profusely and caused water damage in the apt of the person living below us. Their solution was to jam drainage pipes into the all the units in the building, which caused them rain chemically contaminated water all over the building. They then broke down completely and management has completely ignored requests to replace them.
Our roof deck is only partially open and the advertised landscaping, furnishings, and barbecues were simply never installed and management has been completely unresponsive regarding this. I have spoken to neighbors who have far more serious issues (such as water damage, cracked windows, in addition to non-functional or dysfunctional air conditioning/heating units) and they have said management has also been completely unresponsive to them.
Avoid their properties like the plague. - Asaf S.Brooklyn, NY0 friends2 reviews
6/17/2019I'm not a spiteful person, but the folks at Bushburg have been so inept that it's compelled me to write a review on Yelp.
The management is truly horrendous. This is one of those situations where as soon as you give them your money, they completely neglect you as a customer. From service to email-response, it is like pulling teeth with this company. The building's facebook page feels like it was built just so that all the tenants could vent and tell their horror stories about the management. That is why there has been a mass exodus of tenants moving out of at least one of their buildings, who knows how many.
I can't give this place a low enough rating. - R T.Glendale, AZ532 friends5 reviews3 photos
8/8/2019I didn't listen to the reviews. I thought "everyone has problems with landlords."
Such a mistake. I've been lied to, gaslit, leases an illegal apartment, and an embroiled in pure hell after signing with a Bushburg property.
I don't care what building it is or how nice the apartment seems. GO ANYWHERE ELSE. I promise you, within a few months they will expose themselves as the greedy slumlords they are - John D.Beverly Hills, CA0 friends11 reviews1 photo
11/26/2018got ripped off by Jake Freijo, similar situation to others here- glued shut windows, no repairs, water damage coming from upstairs on account of repairs never happening, etc
actually left the unit in considerably better shape and i acquired it in (removed mold, fixed my own plumbing, fixed holes in walls and ceiling, fixed missing tile in bathroom, all at a professional-level), never got back my deposit
was completely unsurprised when i recently saw Jake's WANTED photo being plastered around for his involvement in a racist attack in the city, everything about him always just screamed this sense of entitlement... rich kid thinks everyone in the world ought to be as good to him as his mommy and daddy have been. i'm sure my 2.4K deposit was converted directly into powder that went right up his nose
garbage, slumlords etc. believe all the one-star reviews. the rest are likely employees, or their friends & family - Aviva S.Brooklyn, NY184 friends1 review
12/22/2019Absolutely terrible management. Heat units in the apartment are awful, and when they break the management does nothing to fix it for over a month. Sometimes you'll get the offer of a space heater, which does no good as you have to pay all utilities yourself so it comes out of your pocket. They don't respond to requests or complaints, they lied about the rent and parking, they accused me months later of not paying enough rent and then when I used the opportunity to remind them of all the things they've done to me that need fixing, they ignored me and closed the ticket. The building is owned by Orthodox Jews, and yet is not friendly to religious Jews and they refuse to make accommodations, which I'm pretty sure is illegal. Do not move into a bushburg property. They are liars, cheats, and terribly landlords who don't care about their tenants. If I could give them zero stars I would. The one star can be for the lovely staff (doorman, cleaning crew etc) who are very kind and do the best they can with the hideous management.

11/21/2018I recently moved out of my Bushburg property at 836 Bergen Street in Brooklyn be cause I moved out of state. I worked with Ravan Williams during my three years living there. Ravan was always attentive to my emails and calls and she always escalated my questions quickly and effectively when necessary. Ravan even would proactively let me know when I had an overpayment or credit in my rent account so that I could pay a lower amount the following month. I have dealt with managers at other companies who were no so responsive so she has been a refreshing part of my experience with Bushburg.

10/31/2018Unreal complete scumbags. Between the illegal loft buildout, windows that are glued shut after moving in, numerous stolen packages and not a thing fixed. People leave garbage bags in the hallway instead of taking it out in the hallway. Non stop parties it's unreal. This my experience with staying with my cousin for just 2 weeks. This is 1087 Flushing Ave.

10/4/2011First to Review
I don't even know where to begin with this review. I was sold on renting an apartment that Bushburg managed the 836 Bergen St. location in Prospect Heights. First of all the the building was vacant for 4 years thus developing issues such as mold and water damage. When I had mold in my home I spoke to the property manager Israel he informed me that it would take weeks to have someone there. I later found out that another man who complained about mold in the building threatened legal action and Israel had the mold specialist there within the week. Every time it rained water leaked into my apartment I spoke constantly to the buildings management and received no help. My floor was rising and waving, holes and bubbles were starting to form on the ceiling and leaking water. I asked management for 3 months to fix it and got no assistance in the manner. At one point I was gone for a weekend it leaked so much water in my 4th floor apartment that it leaked down into the 3rd floor. Management went in and tried to fix it and I never received a call or email the entire weekend until I came home to find a wet rug and wall compound. I moved in on May 15 I moved out Oct. 1st and I have still not received my deposit back. I highly suggest not going into any building developed by this company.
