I came here during lunch with my coworker (12pm), there was definitely a line and the tables were for sure filled. But luckily the line went fast and so did the people eating so I was able to find a seat.
The roast beef sandwich here is delicious! I was only able to eat half of one because they're pretty big and packed with meat. The dipping sauce that came with it was AMAZING! Packed with flavor but to be honest though, I didn't really need the sauce for the sandwich. I also tried the mash potatoes and gravy and the potatoe salad. The mash potatoes were okay (3/5), seemed like instant potatoes with home made gravy and the potatoe salad was decent as well (3/5) it was pretty garlicky. My review mainly goes out to the roast beef sandwich! I'll def be back for more.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 666135418431Jul 14, 2019
Don't let the name of this place fool you. Bud's is a sandwich shop that serves up daily fresh roasted meats that are outrageously delicious. Classic.
I'm an aging carnivore with a huge appetite for meat. This proudly exclaimed divey sando shop has been satisfying my lunchtime cravings for deli roasted meats for a long time. They are family owned and operated since 1988.
They are open Monday - Friday 10:30 am - 2:30 pm. They are located in the heart of downtown on 10th street between J and K streets. The interior is no frills... divey but not dirty. It's been the same basically since they opened. Hey if it ain't broke.
The menu is easy to read and understand. Get in line, it's cafeteria style ordering. Grab a tray, tell the staff behind the counter what you want, and move along. The staff are so efficient, they churn out orders effortlessly. They answer the same ole questions like it's the first time. No attitudes or put downs; you might get snark from your fellow diners though. Drinks choices are fountain and bottled non alcoholic stuff. They take cash and card.
Onto the food. The meats are roasted daily. So darn good. Seasoned well. Tender. Juicy. Quality stuff. It's thin shaved. Piled perfectly on sandwiches or for the hot plated lunches. The au jus is darn tasty. My faves are the roast beef and pastrami which I prefer to get for the hot lunch vs sandwich. The mashed potatoes, that are a hot lunch side, is addicting. No lumpy bumpy potatoes. Yum! I've also enjoyed the roasted corned beef, meat loaf plate, and spaghetti n meatballs. Roasted fresh meats and good ole tasty American basic comfort food made from scratch. Ya!

Bud's is classic. Want a good deli sandwich without the pretension of some of downtown Sacramento's other delis? Bud's is for you!
I had a craving for a good, no frills French dip sandwich. Just some meat and horseradish on a roll with some dipping sauce. Bud's came through with a super solid offering. Delicious, thinly sliced beef - sliced to order right in front of the customers and laid on a soft French roll. Mustard, mayo? Tomatoes, lettuce, onions? Cheese? Nope, just lots of uncreamed horseradish, just the way I like it. With some tasty sauce that was thicker than au jus and slightly thinner than gravy. And two killer pickle spears on the side. Thank you very delicious!
The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient.
I give four stars only because of their use of styrofoam and plastic. We need to get over our dependence on this cheap and very environmentally unfriendly packaging. Charge customers an extra buck and buy compostable carry-out packaging options, please!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Nicholas Y.Natomas, Sacramento, CA2982531Sep 17, 2020
I've been going to this place for as long as I have been alive. My parents were both state workers and if I had a day off from school or a half day they would take my brother and I here. Since this place was only open during the weekdays to cater to the local state workers, it was a treat to eat this place. We would all get a Pastrami sandwich with the bread dipped and a side of mashed potatoes with gravy. The gravy is very peppery but that's what makes it good. Some say the roast beef is better than the pastrami but they're pretty similar. My mom loves their Monday special.
I'm distraught to be hearing that this place will be closing September 18th. It will always be a part of my childhood and one my favorite things about Sacramento. Thank you Buds for your continued presence in my life. You will be missed!

Sandwich shop that features a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches located in the heart of downtown Sacramento. They are family owned and have been in operation for several decades. Very friendly staff but the food was "OK". I tried their Bud's Ruben and Bud's diablo sandwich. Everything was really dry and lacked flavor. Needed a whole load of condiments to spread over the sandwiches to give them a nice, mild taste. My favorite item was probably the macaroni salad.

Bud's Buffet gets rave reviews because it's exactly what you'd expect and hope for - a greasy spoon hole-in-the-wall that serves dirty-good sandwiches piled with fresh sliced meat. It seems to be the restaurant of choice for people who eat alone at lunch and veteran government workers.
Let's continue painting this picture. An old-school Pepsi menu board with push in letters. A smattering of mostly middle-aged men contently devouring massive sandwiches. A buffet line that consists of 3-4 different kinds of meat in steamer buckets that they repeatedly pull out in order to machine slice. Comfort food sides like pasta salad and mashed potatoes. It all clicks when you sit down and eat something like my roast beef sandwich with au jus dipping sauce.
More than anything, Bud's is a refreshing throwback in an area with a lot of big overpriced, arena crowd competition. It's a safe haven for the casual diner on a budget.
It is sort of comical that they are advertising they now have salads. As if that's what's pulling people in the door here...Helpful 17Thanks 0Love this 17Oh no 0 - Jul 2, 2019
All the food here is awesome, I've been coming here ever since I've worked downtown which is 24 years!! (EST 1988)
The Reuben is to die for and the pickles are nice and kosher dill tasting.
They give hearty servings of meat on all of the sandwiches, come hungry. There's, pastrami, ham, roast beef and more...oh man, my mouth is watering as I type!!
They also have specials throughout the week, not just sandwiches. You can get the home made meatloaf or lasagna, during one of the days. It's very filling and unless you have the appetite of a lumberjack, you may have to take 1/2 home.
They also have open face sandwiches which is a fading foodie happiness.
The place is moderately decorated. Prices are very reasonable and is a value for what you get.
They pride themselves mostly what they are there for, to make and serve GOOD FOOD! Enjoy!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 7, 2018
I got the Reuben sandwich which was essentially just bread, sauerkraut and corned beef, how a good Reuben should be. They carve the corned beef as you order and stack a generous portion of the meat. Taste is great and the meat is very tender. Reminds me of one of those famous NY style delis. I'd consider it one of the better options around Sac if you like corned beef sandwiches.

What else is there to say about Bud's that hasn't already been said?
It's been around as long as I can remember and has not changed since 1998 when I added it to my regular lunch rotation. My problem is I've changed, and my doctor would get mad at me if I was there every week.
I've had almost everything on the menu, save for the cold sandwiches. Quite frankly, if you're there for a cold sandwich, something is wrong with you. My favorite is the pastrami with everything, dipped, add provolone. I typically can't finish the whole thing, and while the half sandwich is an option, I go for the full because it's great as leftovers. Add in a side like mashed potatoes and gravy to ensure a food coma.
Do not be discouraged by a long line! The guys have the assembly line process down. Just figure out what you want beforehand so you don't hold everyone else up.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
