I found Brian when I began looking into e-collar training for my reactive dog. I wanted to make sure I introduced the collar correctly so that it was as effective as possible, and Brian was a massive help.
Before finding Brian, I struggled with getting my dog (Rumo) to heel, and he's recall was nonexistent. He's a shikoku, a primitive breed similar to the shiba inu, and they are notoriously difficult to fully off-leash train.
With Brian's guidance, Rumo now understands communication through the e-collar, and overall taking a balanced approach has had a positive effect on our relationship because he better understands what behaviors I want from him. He's also heeling incredibly well both on and off leash. And last weekend during a camping trip, Rumo was off leash the majority of the time. I was able to recall him despite strange people and dogs walking by, and even called him off a rabbit - pretty amazing for a high prey-drive dog!
I absolutely love Brian's approach, and he's extremely thorough in making sure his clients expectations are reasonable.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - David C.Sequoyah, Oakland, CA10322Nov 8, 2013First to Review
I found Brian with a Google search for trainers specializing in e-collars.
Our puppy is a lab / pit bull mix that is sweet, smart, and determined. I started researching electric collars because I believe that a combination of plenty of positive reinforcement, coupled with a small amount of correction, is the best way to train a dog. I'm finding that the e-collar is a gentle way to guide her to the behavior we are looking for, like to come when called. It is a lot more flexible than, for example, a corrective pinch / choke collar that only works with a leash, and is a lot more difficult to control in terms of the level of correction.
Brian's training approach starts with identifying the dog's state of mind, e.g., is she playful, confused, rebellious, etc. and working from there. I've already started to learn to use the collar in an effective and humane way, and after just 4 sessions, we've had great results with our puppy. She is already behaving much better on-leash (no more leash biting and tugging) and the off-leash walking is also going quite well.
I've also valued the fact that Brian focuses on what I want, that is, to have a good quality of life with the dog. It isn't all about asserting my dominance, or having her do a perfect "sit". It is more about being able to spend time together safely, off-leash, without her running into the street or after another dog.
Finally, I should mention that Brian provided a no-commitment consultation upfront, where he shared his training philosophy for around 45 minutes before we got started. You have absolutely nothing to lose in doing the consultation, at the very least you can hear about the approach, and if you are curious, see what the e-collar feels like on your arm.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Daniel T.Emeryville, CA01Nov 12, 2013
Brian is quite frankly, the best. The best price, the best professional, and honestly the easiest person in this business to deal with.
Other dog training businesses want thousands of dollars, require you to sign up for classes, or even send your dog off to doggy boot camp, as well as have initial evaluation fees, etc. With Brian, there is simply no bull*&%
He meets you in convenient locations, is willing to work with you to be there when you need him, and is the consummate professional.
His confidence in his abilities gave me the initial confidence to step up and really learn to use the E-collar in the right way.
Brian's approach is basically that dogs should feel happy and natural as much as possible, and that using the e-collar on the dog shouldn't be a scare tactic, nor should it be an unpleasant experience for the dog. I honestly can say that my dog was wagging his tail almost the entire duration of the training, he just loved it.
With Brian's sensitivity to truly understanding the dog's happiness while not letting the training hinder that idea, he is able to communicate to the dog that the E-collar will be in the best interest of both the dog and master.
The beauty of Brian's style is that the dog never loses the feeling of being free because they are always off-leash, but they learn and understand the importance of the recall as being in their best interest. I thoroughly enjoyed this part because my dog's temperament was unaffected by the training, though now he is more attuned to my commands and needs from him.
I have 2 dogs, a 2 year old Lab/Pointer mix and a 6 year Jack Russell Terrier. Both were rescues and had their own quirks.
For the Pointer/lab, He had problems with chasing animals and birds and running too far away from me off-leash. Brian was able to quickly come in and after 6 sessions, My dog is 100 times better. I am able to walk with him most places off leash after Brian's training. I swear after a few sessions, it is as though I have a new dog.
For the Jack Russell, he was abused as a puppy, so the training has had to be super sensitive, but I am confident in Brian's ability to be aware and sensitive while training Jerry in a way that provides him with more structure, while not in a scary or harmful way.
Anyways, I cannot recommend a nicer professional to deal with, and I feel extremely fortunate that I found Brian, and highly recommend him to anyone.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Z Y.San Francisco, CA122May 31, 2014
We consulted with Brian to assess our fear-reactive and aggressive dog for possible solutions with the help of an electronic collar. Brian was very candid in his evaluation and opinion about the likely outcome of training a dog like this to not lunge and bark upon seeing other people and dogs, in that it was possible to suppress the response, but likely not "cure" him. Unlike other trainers, he gave us the best and worst case scenarios. Brian is a true professional and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone who is experiencing dog problems. He clearly cares about what is best for the dog and owner. I will definitely use his services in the future if the need arises.
