Our book club has been meeting for 2 months on Thursday evening.
Luis Bustamante has been our server
each week and has provided excellent customer service. We are served quickly with 10-15 people. Always pleasant and efficient. They have a variety of great food from breakfast to dinner.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jerri B.Fremont, CA01Jan 21, 2024
Love the Black Bear. Can't say enough good things about our server Luis Bustamante. He goes above and beyond for our group week after week. Good job Luis. Jerri Bowen

I have been there several times and I have always enjoyed my meals.
The five rating is for two of my favorites: The Eggs Benedict (which they do very well) and the Beef Pot Roast (which is usually cooked to perfection).
Their mashed potatoes with gravy have always been very good, and their minestrone soup was also very good.
I have also tried their Meat Loaf (fairly good) and their Chicken Fried Steak (I have had better). In both cases, the sauces were excellent, and they will give you extra if you wish.
Overall, this is one of the best (if not the very best) options for Country American comfort food.
Service has generally been very good, (though at times, it can take time for you to be served).Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 1, 2024
As clear as I can: DONT COME HERE.
The place is pretty cute inside. Which is nice, as you'll spend ~2x as long as you'd planned to eat here, as the staff does not care to come to your table anytime soon.
The breakfast/brunch food is terrible. The breakfast ham sandwich was dry and salty. The hasbrowns have the texture of buttered noodles. The biscuit is more a dinner roll, and honestly, it just tastes bland.
The worst thing, though, is the corned beef "hash." Just wow. It is like salty beef spaghetti. I honestly think they were just surprised when my order came in, and the cooks only had 1 minute to google: "What is corned beef hash?"
The eggs were way overcooked. The hashbrowns were just so gross... and that "hash." It was like they pulled out day-old fried potato chunks and just stirred them into a shredded corned beef roast. Then, they warmed it up in a microwave. Flavorless, tough, and sad.
Oh, and don't forget the price. Almost every entree here is $18+. FOR BREAKFAST!! This isn't a dinner. This is coffee and eggs. And they want $20/person. Just insane prices.
TL;DR: Just so bad. Unbelievable.

The breakfast food we ordered was delicious. My eggs were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The gravy is delicious. We could not have asked for a friendlier server, she was attentive and made sure we were never wanting for anything. The restaurant wasn't super crowded on a Sunday morning, so it was nice to be able to get right in without a wait.
We also had the banana cream and chocolate cream pies and they were kind of sticky and gummy. Very thick.

Just saying wow!!! Great changes have taken place since my last review a few years back.
We started gathering weekly at Black Bear for a book study one evening a week....
Luis Bustamonte warmly greets us, has the area set, and allows our order craziness.... Luis makes the experience enhanced ... Even when he's the only one handling all the tables ...
If you happen in after 7pm ask to be seated in his area...
Thank you LuisHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Aug 24, 2019Previous reviewHave to share...I'm embarrassed for Black Bear Diner Fremont....I stopped in for the "pot roast" to take to an elderly shut in couple....
They were looking forward to something that reminded them of a Sunday home cooked meal at Grandma's....
This picture is what I found when I opened the meal to split....my biggest question "where's the beef".....almost looks like a vegetarian meal with so much veggies....I would have appreciated more...."we don't have enough beef for the meal"....
Then I called and was put on terminal hold...
Black Bear Dinner...I now understand why your parking lot was NOT overflowing on a Friday night!!!
And to the person who took the call...guess what...there is something I can do ...I can take it to social media....with a simple recommendation..."think twice before dining here"....
BAM it's posted....just like that!

CFS Review,
I've actually been to this BBD several times while "at home". Usually pretty good as i recall all around but never usually over the top. Some minor inconsistencies here or there including hours. 8am opening some mornings.
Today my Chicken Fried Steak (bigfoot portion) $19 was amazing. The CFS, nicely browned 10oz portion nice n hot. gravy on the side was thick and a plus. potatoes were well browned on outside still white and fluffy in. Three gresh eggs It to a moment for Everything, but was so hot n fresh no worry st all.
Don't get me started on the two biscuits ots , they are so big truly a meal in themselves & take away.
I do enjoy this spot albeit at the cost of another VGD ver good diner down the street. And we all know and love that one Big Time.

Finally got a chance to visit a Black Bear Diner and based on my impression from the decorations outside, it was exactly what I was expecting. Fun, cabin feel to a diner - imagine you're taking a break from hiking/foraging the woods and you're hungry...like a bear!
Upon entering, you'll be entranced by the log-cabin walls lined with merchandise featuring the black bear. If you so happen to resonate with this native mammal or are a fan of the franchise, you may purchase the apparel, stuffed animals, and other goodies.
At this location, you'll also see their mini pies and pie sliced lit up at the front. They look amazing and will definitely get you in the mood for something sweet. Just plan ahead so you don't overeat!
Seating is abundant here and there are certain parts of the big room that are more private than others. If you have a big party or are looking for some place more intimate, ask for a quieter area of the restaurant.
After being seated, you'll get what looks like a newspaper. It's the menu! It's clever and surely fits with the theme.
The menu is huge! There will be something for everyone as it spans across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And among those options, they have lighter options for individuals looking for smaller portions.
If you join their membership program (it's free), you'll receive a free bear's choice meal (2 eggs your way, protein - bacon, sausage, ham, and carb - pancake, waffle, biscuit and gravy) on your birthday. It is huge, so be prepared to bring some home or share. The food is decent and fairly priced for the portions you get. I would have preferred the biscuit to be more crumbly and buttery but it was still delicious smothered in gravy.
For the caffeine seekers, they have bottomless hot coffee or iced cold brew for $4!
The only thing missing is probably some complimentary wifi for the workers out there looking for a place to camp and dine. Otherwise, this Black Bear Diner location is a great spot to grab a bite and soak in the great outdoors...inside.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
