Upon walking into Bistro 1840, I was immediately greeted and seated. After that, though, the service diminished; it appeared that the waitstaff were unorganized and stretched thin. Regardless, after placing my order, I received my food in roughly 15 minutes.
I had the salmon with spring pea risotto, which overall was a pretty good dish. The tender and moist salmon was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The salmon was complemented by the spring pea risotto, albeit not so well. I felt that the spring pea risotto was a bit too heavy on the spring peas, which resulted in an overpowering pea taste.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 93146170Jul 22, 2016
As we were about to begin my hike, the skies opened and it started to rain cats and dogs. This was the first place we headed to escape the rain. Our luck changed because this restaurant is a hidden gem.
We ordered a couple apps and had a couple beers but service and food were outstanding. As a caveat, we didn't order a full meal but what we ordered was amazing. I'll be coming back for sure.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 10, 2016
Excellent service, gorgeous outdoor back patio and wonderful food. Stopped in on a Saturday evening, post-hike. I had the Angus burger and my friend had the salmon with pea risotto. I don't eat meat often but when I do, it's usually a big burger. This was one of the *best* burgers I've had! The bun was fresh and light and the burger was cooked and seasoned perfectly. There were also zero complaints with the salmon dish. Polished off the meal with a local IPA.
Weather permitting, I'd highly recommend the back patio. Our table was close to a huge rock and the setting was so very romantic, complete with citronella candles. Being the nature-lover that I am, this was a near-perfect dining experience for me.

This place was so-so. We enjoyed what we had, but don't expect to pay cheaply. Their mac and cheese is the biggest hit here. It is absolutely wonderful and can be meal for 3 if you have kids and want something for yourself in addition to something else to share.
We enjoyed the patio. It's super quaint and it is fun to people watch as people walk/bike/drive by. If you're a people watcher, opt for the patio. Don't expect much for a view though outside of seeing the buildings right off the street. The mountain view is obstructed by the buildings along the street.
Service was fine. He was super nice and pleasant to talk to. I
t was a solid 3 star experience. Nothing exceptional, and a nice stop compared to some of the other local options.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 316420685Jul 27, 2017
Disappointed. The presentation of the food looked great but the taste of the food did not stand up to the presentation. The meat was extremely salty and the lacked flavor. Also, their outdoor seating was not comfortable. The one positive are their fries. They are good. All in all, I would not recommend.

I hate not giving this place 5 stars and I want to be clear it has nothing to do with the food or our waitress specifically-she was very nice but service was poor due to the fact she was literally working alone as hostess/waitress.
Anyway, It was Saturday night around 6:30 and we were greeted quickly but told it would be a few minutes before we were seated. It was a beautiful night of perfect weather so I was eager to sit outside. They DO NOT take reservations despite yelp saying they do so when I saw multiple tables available outside (only me and the bf dining) I figured outdoor seating would be in our future. However we were told five minutes later that it would be a "long time" before outdoor seating would be available. That was the first odd thing. Then we were seated by the hostess who also appeared to be the ONLY waitress for the entire restaurant. No worries there were only 5-6 tables of people.
Now to the food:
We shared the
fries
wedge salad
burger
Mac and cheese
Every bite was amazing. Fries were crispy and seasoned well. Salad was delicious and fresh. The 1/2 pound Burger was my favorite item. Juicy, flavorful, and the toppings were delicious! The mac and cheese could have served 3 people and had bacon in it (yum!)
Because our waitress was running around and they were obviously very understaffed she forgot to get us more water and we had to eat our entire meal without water. She apologized and explained she was alone.
I understand things come up but service is half the battle at restaurants and this poor woman was exhausted.
Overall-Bistro 1840: please hire more staff because even with amazing food it does not leave a good impression to be basically ignored throughout your meal and lacking a drink with your food!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Clare B.Glen Burnie, MD881014Sep 17, 2017
Amazing service! We felt very welcomed and had two waiters continuously refilling our cups, checking if we were ok, and offering suggestions for the menu. It was 80* in Harper's Ferry. Our waiter saw how uncomfortable we were and turned on the AC for us. He even helped us move closer to the window unit and kept our water glasses full. We loved the hospitality!
I ordered the filet. It was a ordered it medium rare. It was very tough on the outside but very flavorful! The mashed potatoes were my favorite! A must try! The dish was very salty. Overall, the dish was great.
I tried the apple cider ale. That was my only mistake. It was awful!! Always go with wine! They have a great selection.
The food was impressive and presented very well. The attentive servers is what made this visit special! Thank you for making our anniversary dinner memorable!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Matthew T.Brooklyn, NY16525Oct 17, 2016
Loved it! Not sure when we'll be back in Harper's Ferry but this restaurant would be worth a return trip all by itself.
The food was good, the atmosphere was very cool and the service was very friendly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Colleen L.Fayetteville, WV24154Sep 1, 2016
Hard against the side of a hill, Bistro 1840 is a tiny place which proves good things come in small packages.
The back patio, sheltered from the street and the sun, is a perfect place to enjoy a meal. When I saw the beautiful, heaping bowl of fries going to the next table, I had to order some. No regrets. They were delicious.
All the food is fresh and thoughtfully prepared. If you are a foodie, you will like this food.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Javier C.Fort Lauderdale, FL1438733Aug 19, 2017
Tasteless food - trout with zero flavor. I wanted to smother it with lemon, but had to wait 10 minutes to get the lemon. The calamari - also no taste. The bread flaking off and he dipping sauce also bland.
I would have given a 3 - considering the backyard patio is cute and the French fries were pretty tasty, but then - the waitress charged us a tip for the table without telling us. She gave an individual credit card receipt showing the price and at the bottom, it gave suggested tips - 15%, 18% and 20% - even though we'd already tipped. Very deceptive. Everyone at my table tipped 20% on top of the 18% tip they'd already charged.
Tasteless food, long waits, deceptive tipping...an abusive restaurant taking advantage of out of towners. BEWARE!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
