This is a classic, greasy spoon, road food place just off I-75. Filled with Rt 66 and automobile decor straight out of the 50s and 60s, it's a place where locals, truck drivers and cops fuel up (Caution: if you're on the lam, the Manatee Sheriff's Station is across the street).
We went for breakfast (typical eggs, sausage, grits), but two things we've got to come back to try are their burgers and pies (there was a coconut peanut butter version on the menu but we just couldn't imagine eating more).
But here's the thing, this is NOT where you want to come if you're trying to eat healthy or avoid high fat, high carb, high calorie food. There's plenty of butter, oil and salt in everything. Eat like this every day and you'll be joining Elvis soon.
Loved the owner's slogan on the glasses: "Eat here or we'll both starve." No one who eats here will leave starving, that's for sure.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Barbara A.Ellenton, FL2141Feb 16, 2014
Great greasy spoon restaurant serving Classic American comfort food. Omelettes are HUGE! Pancakes are light and yummy. Burgers are great. Grade A!

I have been eating at the Big L since I was a kid. They have perfected American comfort food. The staff is nice and attentive. My favorite restaurant, bar none. Be prepared for a wait during peak hours though, this place is no secret!

Great burgers, fries, onion rings, etc. Good breakfast. Cheap prices generous portions. Better than any chain around.
