We were seeking lodging for a two night stay in San Francisco. We live out of the area and were not familiar with the Beresford. We took a chance and were more than pleasantly surprised. It's a quaint established hotel(not your standard cookie cutter type), with very reasonable room rates and valet parking.
The polite staff took very good care of us.
Jeng, our Valet, made quick efficient work of unloading our luggage, delivering it to our room, and parking our car(in a secure enclosed facility.)
Jeng also served as concierge, making dining suggestions for many good places within walking distance, including John's Grill, where we ate on our first night.
The clean rooms have been updated, however, are small and unassuming. They have no air conditioning, but there is a fan provided, and the double-hung window can be opened for air. If you have allergies or asthma(like I do), I would suggest bringing a small portable air purifier, because the ambiance is special. Hair dryers are available upon request at the Front Desk.
If a fancy, spacious room with a view, and large two sink bathroom with shower and tub is your style, this would not be for you.
They have a stocked mini refrigerator. Though no coffee maker in the room, a daily complementary Continental Breakfast is available downstairs in the adjoining White Horse Pub.
We stayed on the sixth floor, away from the street noise. For us, it was quiet. I sleep with white noise, so perhaps I'm not a good judge of the night.
We will make a point of reserving a room at the Hotel Beresford for future visits to San Francisco.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nelson H.Milton, FL013817Jun 11, 2022
A typical old SF hotel. Fairly small rooms. Most with not much view. But it's clean, good bed, good service.

This Victorian hotel is over 100 years old and is in the heart of the city. It is a traveler's best friend. As with any Victorian hotel, the rooms are going to be super Duper small, it's not going to have a lot of room, but it will have everything you need. There's a wonderful pub and bar downstairs serving food, they serve coffee and breakfast in the morning. The hotel has been meticulously kept up, and the price is amazing. I don't know where anywhere you can go for $76 a night )off-season) and have a wonderful downtown room. You can walk to Union Square, you can walk to the Civic Center, every restaurant and anything to do is right outside your door.
There are some drawbacks, as noted in other reviewer's statements. The shower appears moldy, not due to lack of cleanliness. There is no airflow in the room even with the only window open. There is no bathroom fan. The rest of the room is spic and span clean. Everything is painted, furniture is up-to-date, but there are some other issues. The beds are kind of saggy, the first room I was put in had a broken radiator and must've been 95°. After much discussion and back-and-forth, they got me into a room that I could stand. In the dead of winter you shouldn't have a room that's 95°. Other issues were the windows are very very old so they don't lock, And being alone right on a fire escape that's kind of scary. Would I come back? Absolutely! It's still the best deal for a clean cozy room. Don't expect to have great TV or great amenities, but cozy comfortable and clean. Oh And the best thin
Update August 2019: been on the road all summer and spent a weekend with my Mom celebrating our bdays. Since we literally needed a place to sleep
And get coffee in the morning Beresford was our first choice. Of all the times I have stayed there this was the first time we got a room with a window in the bathroom I think #615. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND ASK FOR A ROOM ON THE ALLEY WITH A WINDOW IN THE BATHROOM.
There was good airflow and circulation removing all steamy showers and bathroom stale air. Room was small with two beds but as always adequate and comfortable!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 21, 2019Previous reviewThis Victorian hotel is over 100 years old and is in the heart of the city. I liked the room. It had an old style heater that actually worked. For breakfast they had complimentary box. Staff was nice and they had wine happy hour too. Old building but nice.

Kind of a shithole, but cleaner, somehow a little classier, with a neat bar attached. The bar used to have free hot dogs and when I lived in SF I was there nightly, but the hotel is a great budget stay. I will say, thankfully I was traveling alone on my most recent stay... because the bathroom door in my room did not close... like it was a slider-type door, and it was broken. So... maybe only check into this place if you'll definitely be alone.

We stayed here for 4 days and loved it. The hotel was very charming, comfortable bed, nice pillows. It's obviously a much older hotel but that really added to the charm. We really enjoyed our stay. We did have issues with them over charging us and also my friends that stayed in the room next door. However, once we brought it to their attention, they fixed it right away. So I would recommend double checking your bill. The restaurant in the hotel had wonderful fish and chips, hot wings and the best garlic fries in town. Great service and prices. Lastly, the little bar "White Horse" was popular and we met people from all over the world. Had such a great time there and the drinks were great and very reasonably priced. One lady at the front desk named Anne was super rude but all the other guys that worked there were great. Just stay away from her. We will be visiting here again.

We decided to stay there because it was quite cheap compared to other hotels in the city. Very well located, safe area even at night. The hotel was clean but smelled kind of funny, might have been the detergent they use. We had to open the window to ventilate the room for a few minutes but then it was fine.
Really small room but it had everything we needed: beds, tv, private bathroom, small fridge, clean sheets and towels and you can get a hairdryer at the front desk (free of charge). There was no safe though.
Complimentaty breakfast includes: croissants, pastries, muffins, cereals, fruits, juice, milk, coffee. Pretty basic but much appreciated in a fairly expensive city.
I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chris C.South Lake Tahoe, CA617Mar 2, 2019
The worst. Checkin wait was 45 mins. One person handling checkin. What could possibly ever take 45 mins to checkin.
Unable to adjust shower: either scaling or freezing!
Slipped in bathroom wet floor due to shower leak. Better as a homeless shelter/warm room.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Fabiana F.Plano, TX13122Nov 5, 2017
The only reason why I'm not giving a full 5 stars to this hotel is the staff. Front desk sir was very rude, but everyone else was really nice. I ate at White Horse some shrimp and chips and totally loved it!!
The room was nice and clean, the temperature great and also a nice tv with some channels.
Location is amazingly close to a lot of things, and like 2 or 3 bus stops for Big Bus tour so that's even better. Really safe area as well.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
