The Linda lasagna is awesome!
The ravioli rocks!
The people were exceptionally friendly and helpful!
Oh, this is a food truck, NOT a roach coach.

Just wanted to pop by and write a quick little love note to Basil Thyme and their spectacular lasagna. Been missing you guys big time! Can I be bothered with the level of work involved in making lasagna at home? Not a chance. Especially since there is zero chance of it tasting as good as Basil Thyme's. Hope to see you guys after the pandemic for lunch, as I scarf down some Guiseppe lasagna but convince myself it was a healthy lunch if I eat the salad too, lol. Heck, I even miss doing everything in my power to stave off the carb coma and attempt to be productive in the second half of my day!

Impressive lasagna from a food truck! I tried 1/2 butternut squash (the special) & 1/2 truffle & portobello (the giuseppe). Those were the only two vegetarian options. It was served with a side salad that was included in the price: a total of $12 (after tax).
FYI I had been hunting for the truck for quite some time, which was quite difficult to find. Their FB page is the most useful for locating them, but it's not always updated.
The two lasagnas I tried totally won me over because of whatever sauce was on the mushroom version, and the non-cloyingly sweet pieces of squash. The mushroom lasagna had more sauce, and a nice earthly flavor and creamy texture. The truffle wasn't overpowering, and I suspect there was some kind of truffle oil or butter used to make he sauce maybe. But both versions were very neat and extremely layered. Visually I didn't notice much sauce between each layer, but each bite I took was an even amount of al dente pasta, evenly distributed flavor & sauce/ingredients.
The salad was good too! It was flavorful and lightly dressed. Pretty sophisticated for a truck, compared to other side salads most trucks sell.
I tried to rationalize spending so much at a food truck as my limit is usually $10:
1. The salad was actually spinach and other hearty mixed greens with carrots (as opposed to plain ole' ice burg that many other food trucks offer).
2. I basically got each piece of lasagna for $6 per portion. Consider the salad a freebie if you will.

Oh Basil Thyme, why are you so delicious? Is it your layers upon layers of luscious meat and veggies? Your delightful cheese? The petite side salad with its palate-cleansing crunch? Everyone knows that lasagne is not the healthiest of lunches, but when I bite into your butternut squash and goat cheese, or your chicken florentine, I'm almost able to convince myself "Hey, at least I'm getting my veggies!" With your friendly service and quick prep, I'm back at my desk in no time, fielding questions like "what's that amazing smell?" And "where did you get that?" Oh, Basil Thyme!

This was probably the best food truck I've had in the district thus far. Although it was also the most expensive, it was definitely worth paying the extra few bucks for the quality of this food truck. I ordered the Linda (traditional) lasagna with the side salad. And for the extra dollar, it was hard to resist making it a combo and adding both a cannoli and a soda.
The lasagna itself was fantastic, one of the best I've ever had. Granted, I don't order lasagna very often, but still, I can't remember one in the recent past that was better than this one. It was soft and literally melted in your mouth. Not over- or under-cooked in the slightest. I'm not sure if you can describe lasagna as being tender but that is what it was. The salad that accompanied it was very good, not amazing but I did appreciate its uniqueness (tiny cucumbers, sliced cheese, and uncommon dressing) in comparison to most food truck salads. I didn't particularly care for the cannoli though. The cream was sweet and tasty but the shell was bland and crumbled easily. Overall though, this food truck is a refreshingly delicious option among many food trucks that aren't.

Four and a half stars. While I've had much better Italian grub at a sit-down restaurant, @BasilThymeDC is definitely topping the savory end of my food truck list so far. These guys are serving up a better lasagna out of a vehicle than the brick'n'mortar Italian eatery they parked down the block from in Van Ness.
I scurried out of the office on an unapproved break time before noon with the intention of getting the Pasquale (you had me intrigued at multiple meats). But the owner was cheerful and outspoken about recommending the Lisetta, one of two options on the menu that hadn't been listed online. The dude's confidence and enthusiasm could've sold me the pants off my rear end. Always ready to try someone else's favorite, I ordered the Lisetta combo and booked it back before anyone missed me.
Home cooking that's served fast, super warm, and in resilient plastic bags. Lucky me, I got a corner piece-- what I lost in overall volume, I gained in double the sexy edge crust. Lisetta lasagna was just what I was craving from a carb fix: tasty pulled pork, cheesy surface, nicely cooked pasta, and plenty saucy without drowning the takeout box. I am more ashamed that I paid with a roll of quarters, than by the fact that I looked like a bearded Irishman after licking the ricotta-mingled sauce clean.
Both side salad and pasta were topped by generous shavings of Parm. Greens were fresh and the salad was good, roasted red bell peppers, olives, thinly sliced cucumbers, grape tomatoes, kalamata olives, and mixed greens tossed in a light vinaigrette. I'm not a cannoli fan, but I got some nice crunch and thankfully it wasn't overbearingly sweet. The smattering of chocolate chips at the open ends added a few decadent accents to the mild pastry dough, and kept the ricotta filling from rubbing off too much on the foil.
I'll be hitting their truck when they return next month if I'm still working in the neighborhood... though I'd probably aim to get just the pasta and salad.

There are only a handful of trucks whose food truly rivals a fixed location eatery (a.k.a. - restaurant). Basil Thyme can count themselves among those few.
The pasta, cheeses, sauces, meats...all culminate in fine homestyle italian cuisine. Even the side salad is not bad (and I am no salad guy).
Word has gotten out though (thank a lot CityPaper!) so get there early unless you don't mind waiting in a LONG line.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Jun 6, 2012Previous reviewI was really surprised how good their lasagna was! Excellent quality and a great deal!

I finally got to try Basil Thyme for lunch. I'm SO glad I work really close to the food truck area :)
All of Basil Thyme's varieties of lasagna looked super tempting. I decided on the butternut squash with goat cheese because I've never had lasagna like that. All I can say is WOW. I'd hit up Basil Thyme every week if I ate carbs like that! You gotta try this variety. The lasagna noodles were cooked perfectly and I loved the extra chunks of butternut squash on top. I can't believe I'm so in love with squash.
Anywho, I got the combo for $1 more which includes a drink and a cannoli. I opted for a bottled water and the cannoli of the day was pumpkin. I'm not even a huge fan of pumpkin, but I tried it. The flavor was great and it wasn't too sweet. I DID have to save it for the next day since the lasagna was very filling.
So, there it is. Try the Basil Thyme truck. I plan to try every variety of lasagna they offer.

I came to the window at 12:30pm, and most items were sold out already- that's how popular and fast they sell!
I ended up getting half of the beef lasagna (they only had half a portion left), and half of the vegetarian lasagna, with a side salad. The side salad was delicious, and the beef lasagna was remarkable. However I was not a fan of the vegetarian lasagna- it tasted plain to me, and the squash was a bit soggy.
The portions were huge, so I definitely feel the $12 high food truck price is worth it, if you are looking for a big satisfying lunch. I would highly recommend getting to the truck early- they sell out fast!

Best lasagna I've ever had. The Linda, Lisseta, and Giuseppe are all amazing. I haven't been able to bring myself to try any other offerings, because it'd mean I wasn't getting one of those three.
There are a lot of bad food trucks in town. I could probably count on one hand the trucks that get a second visit. This is the only truck that earns my "cancel existing plans" seal of approval.
Great value too (huge portion + salad + soda + cannoli for $13). I'm stuffed.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
