Train stations in Switzerland are hubs of the community. As a visitor, I do not know all the locations of businesses around Zurich but by going to the train station I can find most of what I need. (Probably paying a premium but Switzerland is expensive overall and the station is convenient.)
I use the Oerlikon one for shopping (chocolate and snacks) plus there are 2 grocery stores. I also enjoy people watching while haveing a beer at the local bar that is on the south side of the train station.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 6, 2013First to Review
I haven't been at this train station for a while and recently started going there again. Like most places in Switzerland, it's constantly under construction, and I got kind of lost trying to find the way down from the station to the Tram 10 stop. Eventually found my way, but it was a bit confusing at first.
This is quite a large station, but well-connected with many lines, including a direct one to the airport. There is an Asia Store right outside, and I also saw a specialty barbeque sauce shop nearby. Coop and Migros Klubschule are located right across the street, too. So pretty good for lots of stuff.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Simona C.Zürich, Switzerland8660129Dec 15, 2013
Bahnhof Oerlikon is the best! It is very well connected to Zurich HB (8 minutes by train) and it has 8 train tracks (hence many trains pass by here). It's also only a 3 minutes train ride to Zurich airport.
The neighborhood itself is not really a neighborhood in the sense you would expect in Zurich and that's mainly because all the important stores are well concentrated in less than one square kilometer: huge Coopy City, huge Migros, Ochner Sport, Fust, Interdiscount, bookstores, famous restaurants (Rolli's, Chayenne), pharmacies open on Sundays, dentists and so on.
Hence, Oerlikon is a nice place to visit and a nice place to live in. However, there's annoying construction work happening at the moment. This makes the experience of passing through the train station and reaching your train track quite uncomfortable.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
